Wrong! They are only allowing users to send MMS over 3G, I'm guessing because of large amounts of info being sent. i.e. Voice notes, locations, etc. 1st gen is Edge, therefore not allowing you to use this new AMAZING feature.
Ridiculous! Apple should implement everything they possibly can and leave it up to the users to complain how badly it works in any given circumstance. This goes for everything. Users historically do not mind buggy, seriously disfunctional cellular operating systems. For Apple to put its own pride and greed in front of the arbitrary desires of its users is criminal at worst and condescending at best. Slap it together and let users worry about hasty security oversights and glaring performance compromises. Seriously. Who do they think they are.
Jesus people. MMS has been on phones with GPRS almost since camera's were first put into mobile phones. Stop believing the Apple BS.
Europe and Asia have had it, used it, got bored of it ages ago.
Stop thinking America only and EDGE. Think rest of the world and GPRS.
Exactly right. Apple has NO LEGITIMATE reason to hold back all the features they developed. I'm sure most of the features in 3.0 have been in the iPhone OS since its launch, and Apple just has them commented out. Just a bunch of ego maniacal jerks.

Installed the 3.0 Beta, neither iPod or Mail will launch. Everything else appears fine..

Rebooted a couple of times still with no luck.

Previous Cydia Emojii hack still remains on the phone (Yay!).

Can't figure out how to actually send an MMS, though..

Are you on a 2G or 3G iPhone? If you're on the 2G, then you're not supposed to be able to.

Also: if you're on the 2G, can you go into Settings > General > About and tell me the Modem Firmware (baseband) version?

I agree with you but it affects our society at large in the end.

First you make them feel comfortable with the idea of what they are (cf. acceptance somewhere on Maslow pyramid) and the next thing you know, they want to get "married" and raise children?
What becomes of those children whom grew-up with "two daddies"?

Decaying society is all I think of. Between that and two Bush terms, I am glad Apple exists.

If you wish to continue this debate feel free to IM me, but I will not comment any further on it in this thread. I fail to see how it is important to the iphone 3.0 software.

Loved the event; one of the best ever. I would have liked to see a better file management system but I'm sure that will come out in the future.

get a camera for the time being... what gives?

The iPhone is supposed to consolidate devices, if you have to carry a camera around what's the point? Not to mention what if you want to take a video when you weren't planning on it? More than likely you won't have a video camera with you unless you're like me and carry a macbook, digital camera, video camera, ipod touch and more around in a backpack all the time.

This quote from the first page is pretty much all that needs be said on the subject.

Did they say if you can forward a text message yet?
Why bother commenting if you havent paid attention?

Yes, you can forward a text or multiple texts.

...
Now, I am definitely not saying Garnet is superior to the iPhone OS, because Lord knows the OS is horrid and needed to be replaced 5 years ago. But, things iPhone customers think are amazing new features and things iPhone customers still are waiting on have been available for quite a while from other vendors.

most folks in this site/thread do not care much about other devices, but thank you for your illuminating expose here... now we can go on enjoying our iphone devices... if it is ok with you, that is...

I hope you are being sarcastic.

I also admit to being slightly worried that the hardware update this summer will be very significant. I think the camera is embarrassing and has to be updated no matter what. Also battery life.

I'm just slightly concerned there might loads of other amazing hardware they might include. Just not sure what, other than 32gb and much more powerful processor.

As for the 3.0 software - I think we can all agree that this is a necessary update that is, yes, LONG overdue. Being without video is still lame, and I think they will address that in the hardware.

All in all I am pretty happy though.

Don't get your hopes up, people do that for every release and Apple's stock goes up, then the release comes and it drops, that's because for those expecting a lot Apple never meets expectations.

Any idea why MMS isn't available on 1st gen iPhones? I understand the stereo bluetooth, but cant think of anything that would make the 1st gen unable to send picture messages. The one thing that came to mind was the speed of sending pictures through EDGE, but if I can send pictures in emails and everything else (not to mention I have done it for years on other phones without 3G) then I am back at square one in not understanding this at all.

Yea, pretty f*cked up right ? Apple wants you to buy a new phone. I think it's pretty f*cked up how a lot of original iphone users paid 499 and 599 for thier devices and apple is kind of screwing those guys/gals.

An Engadget comment sums it up:

"Applause. Applause for a feature that every other device in the world has. Odd."

Man, so screwed over by getting all those updates for free....

So what if they want to get married? Its none of our business. I see it as rather arrogant and obnoxious for you to even state such an opinion as if it matters to them. At the end of the day, before you say "this is wrong", ask yourself what gives you the right to just barge in on someone's life and judge them, it has nothing to do with you.

Sounds like you're trying to pin the state of society on a group of people you just simply don't like. That is just disturbing, to see someone being so narrow-minded. I'm not gay, but I have no problem with gay people, why on earth would you put up barriers like that? As long as the person is a decent person, its okay.

How is Apple screwing those guys/gals? they got 2 years of use and if they want to continue to use it the same way they have been using it there is no need to upgrade, if you want new stuff you have to upgrade? I don't view that as screwing someone over. And it's always possible Apple could do an exchange program with 1st gen iPhones for 3rd gen iPhones.

Seriously, what makes you think you are smarter than the guys who develop the iPhone software? If Apple wanted multi-tasking on the iPhone, it would take about two seconds to implemented. It is a feature of MacOS X that is turned off _on purpose_ on the iPhone. Because Apple knows a few things about building mobile phones that you don't know: That background applications eat memory and eat processing power and eat battery life.

Well said, but I believe you will be able to do it with the new iphone which will have more faster processors.

You might want to check out the thread where users post pics. taken with their iPhone. There are some pretty amazing pictures. Check out this picture I just took with my iPhone!

Pretty sure Apple is still getting a cut of our monthly bill... Can't call that free, now can we?

um...perhaps you weren't paying much attention at the release of the 3G but they are not, AT&T (and other carriers) subsidized the iPhone 3G in exchange to keep all the monthly profits. The same as most other cell phones.
