some folks are happy, others are pissed, thusly covering the entire spectrum of human nature.

- have there ever been a telephone that reinvents itself as much as the iphone? Nothing comes to mind (nokia?)

- is the iphone a telephone? May be Apple is right, and the iphone is a netbook... of sorts.

- is the Pre a good phone? do not know, but it is very good at giving us iphone.os.3.0 ! If this trend continues, the iphone will be a very good device in a year or two...

- perhaps iphone.os.3.0 is what the iphone could have been since day one, but are we not glad that we have had the iphone for nearly two years now? I know a few folks that are very appreciative of the iphone.

- all things aside, iphone usability leaves most other devices far behind, and for this, most folks love the iphone. It is the first computer that my mother every had, and now she wants a real macbook... thank you iphone! (I believe that no other phone would have done this). Now my mother can watch her grandchildren via videoconference with no assistance from any one. I believe that only apple could have done this.

Therefore, I for one, appreciate the iphone and the os in it... Ah! forgot to mention that this device has made few new millionaires! Those folks are really appreciative, I am sure. :)

Having said this, if you like the iphone, enjoy it. If you do not like the iphone, make an application, sell it, make some money, and this will offset some of your grievances.

Cheers.

most folks in this site/thread do not care much about other devices, but thank you for your illuminating expose here... now we can go on enjoying our iphone devices... if it is ok with you, that is...
:D

um...perhaps you weren't paying much attention at the release of the 3G but they are not, AT&T (and other carriers) subsidized the iPhone 3G in exchange to keep all the monthly profits. The same as most other cell phones.

That is only true for you 3G owners... Us iPhone 1,1 owners are still sending Apple money every month...

Ridiculous! Apple should implement everything they possibly can and leave it up to the users to complain how badly it works in any given circumstance. This goes for everything. Users historically do not mind buggy, seriously disfunctional cellular operating systems. For Apple to put its own pride and greed in front of the arbitrary desires of its users is criminal at worst and condescending at best. Slap it together and let users worry about hasty security oversights and glaring performance compromises. Seriously. Who do they think they are. Exactly right. Apple has NO LEGITIMATE reason to hold back all the features they developed. I'm sure most of the features in 3.0 have been in the iPhone OS since its launch, and Apple just has them commented out. Just a bunch of ego maniacal jerks.

I think the answear to your statement is MARKETING .

An Engadget comment sums it up:

"Applause. Applause for a feature that every other device in the world has. Odd."

So bloody what, so they shouldn't add the feature because every other phone has it?

I think Apple nailed this event on the head. Some of the features could have come out sooner, but I think they were preoccupied with making the phone awesome more than anything.

I wonder how this update will make the iPhone into the ultimate portable gaming platform...I can't wait to find out.

PWNAGE TOOL ppl, get to work!!!

Yea, pretty f*cked up right ? Apple wants you to buy a new phone. I think it's pretty f*cked up how a lot of original iphone users paid 499 and 599 for thier devices and apple is kind of screwing those guys/gals.

chill i was pretty pissed at 1st but then i realized how eazy it will be once it's out to download the 3G version of the OS the install it on an edge phone. MMS should work perfectly then even if apple and AT&T doesn't like it

Good luck with that.....

Does the 2g have a mic built in?

No, but these do and are compatible with the 2nd gen iPod Touch.

EDIT: not to mention if bluetooth is enabled then bluetooth headsets should work, and you should be able to use Google Voice when it's released to use the iPod Touch as a phone over wifi for free :)

So when they say that the bluetooth is 'unlocked', does that include file transfers? To other phones?

Ignore them. Some people have an absurd pathological hatred of Apple and can't stand their success. They believe in the mac-latte stereotype, which stirs feelings of class divisions, which makes them despise Apple. That's why they champion every average phone as an "iPhone killer". It's happened so many times now, it's getting boring.

I guarantee that 3 months after the Pre's released, you won't hear another word about it. Just like the HTC Touch, XPERIA X1, the Blackberry Storm, the T-Mobile G1, the Samsung Instinct...etc. All average phones that were hailed as the saviour of mankind by people who are desperate for the iPhone to lose.

Great quote man. So true, the absurd pathological hatred of Apple. Yes there are stupid mac fan boys who will defend Apple even when its ripping them off to the teeth ('but its ok because..') but the Apple haters are even more irrational imo.

How is Apple screwing those guys/gals? they got 2 years of use and if they want to continue to use it the same way they have been using it there is no need to upgrade, if you want new stuff you have to upgrade? I don't view that as screwing someone over. And it's always possible Apple could do an exchange program with 1st gen iPhones for 3rd gen iPhones.
I say that they are kind of slapping them in the face by not letting them have that feature. If i pay $499 for a phone i shouldn't have to buy another phone for at least 3 years, assuming it comes with a lot of premiums. I'm pretty sure the 1st gn iphone has the capabilities to send MMS, apple just wont let them. So if they want MMS legitimately, users are then forced to pay an additional $10 to AT&T, in the states. I know $10 bucks isn't a whole lot more but the original $20 plan works for some. I think thats just wrong of apple to do that .

so what are itouch users supposed to do when these apps require blutooth gor games etc?(update???:D) and for games wouldnt wi fi be much more efficient?

Well then don't let Apple limit you or let AT&T take more money from you and jailbreak. I have a feeling that even in a year if they did the same thing the same people would be complaining, it's the same argument with Snow Leopard dropping PPC support, sure it sucks but those are the cards your dealt (from Apple) and you have options, so make a decision, you didn't buy the iPhone to send MMS so don't whine just because others can do it and you can't.

EDIT: BTW, you can jailbreak and unlock your iPhone, iPhone 3G users can't do that but I don't see many of them complaining.

I got so excited to see all of these awesome features listed for the new iPhone 3.0 firmware! I was literally jumping in my seat from excitement!

Downloading the beta now since I'm a developer! It's going to be so hard to sleep tonight!

My MacBook Air is going to have one long night...

Tethering ON AT&T

You have got to be kidding me on this one, there 3G has been crashing for the last 3 weeks in my area, and sending MMS messages ? Rate hikes going into effect in June.

Give me a "REAL TURN BY TURN GPS" application and I'll be ecstatic

If it requires something the touch doesnt have, it will be an iphone exclusive, simple as that.
