I won't buy the current iMac either.
Say what you will about Apple strategies: frustrating your clients is not a good bet.
I know their strategy has put them where they are today. But I disagree twith the theory that "Apple do as they please, they are a colossus and if you don't like it, look elsewhere".

The secrecy is aimed at rivals, but apparently also at customers.
Many will buy now (an outdated machine) just out of frustration or being tired of waiting.
And then, if/when the new iMac comes out, the frustration will double.

Mid to long term plans should be secret, but short range plans need to reach the end user/buyer.

Agreed definitely not for that same price and technology get old fast nowadays so why get over an year old machine for the same price as it came out???? just not doing that......... .......

The main question is?
If ,and i think so,Imac won't (please God!!!!!) receive any retina display,
why the hell not to release it?
Are 7970 or 680 not available..because 650 are...?
Do they want to repeat the Mac Pro Agony ?
2013....is Cook figurin out that he's actually hurting Apple's reputation?
4 friends of mine after yesterday wll go for Dell and Acer and those were already Apple's money.
Yes Apple can say,,Ivy Bridge..little bump..no update till next tock...
why then in the Air and in the MbPro with that 650 crap of.
and while Apple makes this the problem is that..users won't!!!!!
Its silly and arrogant!
Thanks Cook.

If there are considerable price cuts UNTIL the new version comes out, I may be getting one (while still feeling slightly frustrated).
But I don't see Apple doing it.

IMHO, Apple is solely focusing on the mobile markets nowadays. The desktop is an afterthought.

I feeling that way now too also I still cant believe this articlehttp://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57451286-37/mac-pro-imac-updates-wait-till-next-year/?tag=cnetRiver Idk hearing this suck cuz its makes you more frustrated really and expect us to pay the same price.....

If Apple has decided to use nVidia's GTX 680m over AMD's 7970m, according to Wikipedia the GTX 680m was only released a week ago. May be that's our hold up.

i doubt they put a GTX 680M into the imac tbh - there would have been some 'rumour' by now

I think apple have probably jumped ship with the imac this summer

If they "let" people go on buy current iMacs, thinking a new one will only come out a year from now, and then release one in, say, one month... it's a major disservice to their clients.

Remember that big companies came and went before. Sometimes, all it takes is a bad move or two.

Well, keeping prices the same when you have new versions out regularly is one thing.
Keeping prices when your system is getting old by the day...is another.

I refuse to pay so much for something that was great...one year ago. Basically, that's my stance.

The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning towards an iMac speed bump/USB3/thunderbolt refresh coming with the release of mountain lion, and a new redesign around WWDC '13. While a lot of people did cave and buy an iMac yesterday, there are a lot more who are holding out (and I see this on other non-tech forums as well)... I know Apple dropped the ball on the mac pro, but I can't see them waiting until '13 to do anything to the iMac. I'm not expecting much, but I do think we will see a small bump to be publicized with the release of mountain lion.

I agreee, i thought today i was coming back home from the apple store with a new 27 inch imac (money all ready) - my needs have changed and i no longer can keep up with just a mac book pro - i need less mobility and bigger screen estate value - but refuse to pay for old technology

IM SO PSSED

Your so right and im not buying one until I see a price cut or a refresh....that educational discount doesn't cut it for me...but also it just seem strange that those parts number on the leak list much up with the new product list on the Australia apple site and also the price match up when u add them to your cart and checkout...seem strange to me.....

Whatever happens I am holding on. I have been waiting a year to buy an iMac. And i refuse to buy one until it is redesigned. Thats just what I want wheather you agree with that or not.
However, I am tempted to upgrade my 2011 MBA to the new retina MacBook Pro. But then again maybe not. My point is, I am sticking in there waiting for the new iMac. Just imagine how we will feel when it's announced.

If a "redesign" is the sticking point, buckle up for another year. Silent refresh bump soon-ish and big redesign next year seems likeliest.

What happened man, just a few days ago you were retina's greatest advocate?

Retina's greatest advocate? I don't think so. I was hoping for a brilliant all star iMac with a retina display but that didn't happen and so it's left me bitterly disappointed with apple. So disappointed i actually got rid of my ipad 3 this morning. I want nothing more to do with apple. 6+ months they kept me waiting, sod them.

;)

Asus have some really great products. I've swung both ways over the years, leaning back towards mac since OSX. However, I bought an asus notebook for my wife because I was impressed by its speed, look and feel. It turned out a very good macine - similar simple and reliable functionality as a mac. A 27' ASUS (very similar integrated desktop setup to mac) with Windows 7, the advantages of MS Office in its native environment, plus FCut pro, $500 cheaper, better specs - with no imac update - have the scales tipping.

Better specs? The screen is 1920x1080!

Wow, hope you pick up. You were way more fun in your pre-WWDC '12 days.

The ASUS all-in-ones have full HD display, 1 inch thick, faster processors, usb 3.0, bigger HD (faster in smaller models), more ports... better spec.s. They even seem to have a desktop with a touch screen!

Any serious (non-religious) criticism or praise of these machines in comparison to the imac would be interesting.

Completely different purpose. It's Intel integrated graphics, you won't be able to do much on it.

Not all All-in-one's have the same target audience. HP's is meant for labs. Asus's looks like it's meant for hanging on a wall in a dorm room or something (assuming the student isn't a PC gamer).

Well, the 27" iMac has a vastly better display and faster GPU option. So you should compare these Asus machines to the 21.5 iMac, not to the 27".

If good ol' MacPro still get an update (admittedly, meager one) .. then iMac will get one too. Just wait. You can't? Buy one now since it won't be tremendously better. But well .. you waited so far, wait a lil longer .. if you can.

The highest end Asus all in one (costs $1500ish) does not compare to iMac in whatever means. It only has 1080p 27" display (super crap resolution for the size) . It only has GT540M which still much under with 6970M. It only has 2slots of RAM. It uses i7 2600s instead the real deal. Faster processor? You sure?

Highest end iMac cost $2000ish, looks cooler, works better, and it runs Windows too if you want it. The extra $500 you saved from Asus wirth all the spec difference.

I only see a small benefit to get an Asus than 2011 iMac.

Lets be clear, the Mac Pro did NOT get an update. Don't play Apple's shell game.
Talk of a new imac a year from now is ridiculous. A year is a long time in computing. Anything can happen. Apple seems to be backing off of desktops slowly but surely. Hope this doesn't back fire on them. No one is praising this decision.

As dismal as it is, it's still an upgrade. I dont like it either, but I wouldnt deny it.

I have to agree with this.
The MacPro "update" is too little to be noticeable.
And ignoring the iMac would-be buyers and telling them "maybe next year, yet you can always buy now the one we released one year ago" is ridiculous.
