I ordered a high end 27" iMac in April, only to cancel the order after doing a little research and finding out that I was gonna spend $3500 on a year old computer. I hate that I still don't have an iMac, but would hate even more to see a new one in a month or even 6 months. That's just te way I am. If I went and spent top dollar on a new car and the new model came out for the same price or just a little more within a year I would be pissed. Car dealers mark down their old models to get rid of them before the new model comes out, Apple apparently doesn't need to do that. I am under the impression that the majority of people who buy Macs just going to the store and get whatever they see and never go on to these forums and worry about a new product coming out. We are the minority, and as long as Apple can keep the majority happy they don't worry about us. It's depressing but it's the facts.

As dismal as it is, it's still an upgrade. I dont like it either, but I wouldnt deny it.

I can't find the source now, so maybe I'm just imagining it, but I thought I read that the motivation behind the "update" was that the base processors they were using before are no longer available. They're even still using graphics cards that were thought to be out of production (according to The Verge).

Asus have some really great products. I've swung both ways over the years, leaning back towards mac since OSX. However, I bought an asus notebook for my wife because I was impressed by its speed, look and feel. It turned out a very good macine - similar simple and reliable functionality as a mac. A 27' ASUS (very similar integrated desktop setup to mac) with Windows 7, the advantages of MS Office in its native environment, plus FCut pro, $500 cheaper, better specs - with no imac update - have the scales tipping.

I am not sure how you're comparing, but I struggle to see the "better" specs.

I can understand that Apple makes more money off of the social connection devices, but with its huge resources you would think they could also easily stay up to date with the more professional side of things.

Is the current iMac really that bad/old? Personally, and I'm not really a computer guru, I'll buy the current model. I'm just not going to wait another year for a maybe...

What's the holdout for? USB 3? I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have any clue which was which unless I read the spec sheet...

The holdout is a psychological one. Knowing you are paying for "older" technology and soon (probably) more recent units are going to be available AT THE SAME PRICE.

Again, if a machine is not updated regularly, it's price should come down.
I like Apples policy of renewing their machines and keep the prices, but this needs REGULAR updates, not 2 year cycles, IMHO.

As I stated in an another thread If you think about the product list that showed up meant something because most of it matched up with the refreshed products on the Australia apple site and when u add the to the cart the price matches. Also the ipad cases matched....it seem weird to me that this info came out before and most of it match up...so it probably means something for iMacs...check it out.... we still dont know when its coming but obviously those left over part number are for something.......

I hope you're right;-) -I read the Australian price list too, but do you remember which "part numbers"(models) are not being announced yet? -vaguely I remember one or two iMacs ........but not as expensive as the retina MBP, and that's why we shouldn't expect a retina iMac....:-(

I think its a 50/50 thing.. I think its a bad strategie

Ive been waiting for a new release of iMac and since it's not coming now, I will not buy the 2011-model. Pretty sure many ppl think the same..

I rather save the money and continue with my pc for one more year, and if i really was in need of a new computer right now, I would still not buy the older iMac.

If you buy one now you will always think, What if they release one in July, Or in 3 months? In the fall..

That's very true. That's why I bought myself a iPad 3 last night to ease the pain of Apple's stupidity.

I'm happy there was no new iMac released yesterday because the one I bought some time ago is still the CURRENT MODEL !!!

I'm glad I did not " wait for the new one " as many said I should, had I taken that advice I would be disappointed today!

Haha .... you should buy when you need to buy, so long as you can afford it.

No matter when you buy, another one is always coming down the road.

When I bought my latest iMac, I gave no thought to anything other then buying to satisfy a current need.

If they had released a new one a month after I bought mine, would that have caused mine to perform any less then the day I bought it?

I'm not waiting past June for a refresh, so I switched my strategy. Bought a mid-range refurbished i5 instead of a top-end i7. It'll do for another couple of years if necessary; otherwise I'll sell it off and get the new one on my own time.

anyone putting faith in these?

https://www.macrumors.com/2012/05/1...pro-and-imac-models-showing-up-in-benchmarks/

New MBP are out, and the specs appear pretty accurate... maybe retina macbook at WWDC only because its more "developer related", also shifting releases to get more press coverage? Or only a very accurate fake picking the most suitable chips in the ivy bridge lineup?

I mean, it's one of the longest periods without refresh in apple lineup in the latest years (excluding mac pro, but we can all understand it's a different kind of product). Waiting for 2013 would make it pretty odd... but again, they can do this to put retina directly in the new models... who knows.

But seeing the benchmarks leaked on Geekbench that have been accurate on MBPs, i think that those iMac exist and could come out with ML. Just like MBAs with Lion.

Also: MacRumors just reposted the blog post from PrimateLabs, the 15-inch MBP matches perfectly the specs of the leaked bench, also the motherboard number was correct. Bios slightly changed.

Yes. Appears to suggest that the Ivy Bridge iMac actually exists; they're just not rolling off the assembly line yet.

The iMac will not have a retina display. It adds an extra $600 to the MBP for a tiny 15" screen. Imagine a 27" screen, it would add well over $1000 to the price.

I would pay $1000 more for a 4k/5k resolution 27" iMac. If it brought the cost from $2500 to $3500, I'd buy it. I don't know if I'd go higher than $4000. My feeling is that anyone that earns a six-figure living that requires that they sit in front of a monitor (or three) for 10h per day would do the same. Perhaps they will pull a MBP with the iMac where they provide minimalistic chipset updates to the existing models and release an iMac NG for those willing to pay extra for progressive technology.

The new MBPNG looks really nice, and I'd probably purchase one if I didn't have a home office.

I am so happy I bought mine back in november. :) Best computer I have ever had. My MBA complements it perfectly.

My guess? Minor spec bump w/ new CPU and maybe something else minor around the time Mountain Lion is available.

After that, it's the long wait for a retina iMac next year when they can hit the yields they're targeting for a price that's realistic. I think they've got the tech for a retina iMac ... they just can't sell it in an affordable package, so they're choosing to wait.

You'll note that MR went out of their way to fudge the buyer's guide on the Mac Pro despite the fact that it was just (mildly) bumped.. and still left the iMac at "Updates Soon". A spec bump is coming. New hotness in 2013.

A new design maybe. But doesn't say anything about not updating the internals this summer. They wouldn't let the iMac sit for 2 years. That's bad business.

I sure hope you guys are right, thanks for the shot of optimism.

All the part numbers have been accounted for, the ones previously assumed to be new iMacs were just the spec. bumped MacBook Pros.

Don't expect any retina iMacs until 2013-2014 and with a hefty price tag attached to them as well. I would be happy with a CPU and graphics refresh in the summer.

Forbes is reporting that only the Mac Pro is slated for a 2013 redesign. (According to MacRumors, that clarification comes from Apple PR.) Cult of Mac infers that this means we can expect a 2012 iMac refresh, though the iMac is not actually mentioned.
