When will we see a iMac with a touch screen interface is there any rumours with OSX transition to an iOS feel I'am assuming that it will bound to happen.

Not a transition really, no. However, there's an ongoing implementation of iOS features into OS X that'll essentially bring the two closer together over time. Many "serious" users are against this "cartoonification", if you will, of a serious OS, since much of the work done on a computer is far too complex in a relative manner, and requires more user modality than any App can offer.

There's patents of iMacs with touch screens that belongs to Apple (if I remember correctly) but I have yet to see anyone who actually believes it's something that they'll push out. The market would be a minority, and if recent events are anything to go by, Apple are focusing on the big money where they can sell millions and millions of units.

While personally I like the idea of a touch screen without a fundamental change to the design of the stand I don't think it would work. They need a led which allows the iMac to lay almost flat with the desk IMO.

One thing I have notice is when they test the iMac against the PC all-in-ones they often have touch (and bluRay) but the iMac comes out on top most of the time.

Either way touch is unlikely in the next update which is looking more like a spec update with USB3 and the new CPUs.

I think I'd prefer to speak to my computer, (though not sure how I feel about that just yet...) before I'd want to reach over and touch it.

Mmmm that big glossy screen and fingerprints...

;)

I agree. I need a touch screen desk top like I need a hole in my head.

I have no need or desire for a touch screen desktop.

Speech recognition can be clumsy and inconvenient too. Personally I'd prefer a direct neural interface.

It's strange if Apple will keep neglecting desktops, since they also axed their 17" laptop. They can't only sell tiny laptops and monitors - what kind of strategy is that?

I guess in a few years, they plan on only having iphone and ipads with air mirroring to monitors :(

What ever happened to Occam's Razor? Apple doesn't announce a new iMac on the same day as a new laptop range and everyone jumps to "OMG Apple is now a small screen company! Desktops are dead!"??

Simplest explanation is that the new iMac just isn't ready to release.. e.g. it's waiting for a component.. e.g. a GPU. Yeesh.

Explain Occam's Razor as it pertains to the Mac Pro, thanks in advance

Intel hadn't managed to produce a Sandy Bridge Xeon until March. I'm guessing Apple didn't know if Intel would ever figure it out. Apple didn't see the need to refresh with just CPU clock bumps on the same architecture until Intel stopped making the old chips entirely. Now that Intel's finally proven they can still make server chips, Apple's going back to the drawing board to see what they can cook up for next year.

..

Now if you want me to explain why they don't have an offering with consumer desktop i5/i7's and desktop GPU's, I can't.

Any number of things could be in play here for the iMac. As far as a touch screen, I have enough trouble keeping my iphone screen clean let alone a 27" one. No thanks.

It's because they think if you need a computing machine and can provide your own monitor, you'll buy the mini. They were ignored by the gaming community for so long, that they forgot the importance of carrying high end GPUs. (until the very latest iMacs, and then only in the 27" - they really should have offered the 6970m to all models)

I'm a long time PC user waiting to pull the trigger on a 2012 27" iMac because I was moderately impressed with their choice of high end (though mobile based) GPU in their last[current] model.... and my wife is sick of the franken-puter living on, clutter and all.

Apple doesnt realize that their decision to allow boot camp has changed the rules for gamers. I intend on only installing games when I bootcamp into Windows. (the same games on mac vs windows run much smoother on windows due to a much more dedicated set of driver optimizations (and direct x).) If they offered a Mac Medium (heheh) with a real GPU, PC users might buy their hardware to have a gaming machine, but a device that still allows the less tech-savvy family to get on and appreciate the simplicity of the Mac OS.

For all you touch screen fans, why don't you pretend to type on your screen or something for the next 5 minutes? Then post how great a user experience it was once your arms have recovered.
Apple did not delay the iMac because of touch screens or retina. Maybe next year on the retina. I suspect they are just waiting to bundle with ML next month. At least that is what I'm hoping for.

Touch screen will never happen. Nobody wants to reach up and touch their display.

Retina will not happen within the next 5 years, it would more than double the cost of the machine.

I think a touchscreen desktop could work if they designed a special stand and/or desk to tilt it back or even make it horizontal. Then it would be like a huge tablet for some purposes, kind of like one of those big Wacom monitors.

Touchscreeen desktop? it's a no from me!

I have an iPad and have used it with friends to play chess, lying it flat on a desk between us. The constant looking down at the screen not only makes your neck hurt but it also gives you a headache since it's a kin to being upside down (red out) all be it in a very mild way.

As other people have stated here there is also the very irritating finger marks on the screen and tiredness in the arms after prolonged use. to summarise the following problems;

1. Finger Prints - bloody annoying
2. Arm ach from lifting your arms to the screen
3. For a large screen (27inch) you would have to sit way to close to the screen
4. headache and bad viewing angle for horizontal screen
5. A mechanism for moving the whole screen (computer) around will be both cumbersome and ugly detracting from the AIO / Apple sleek design
6. It's a gimmick and wholly unsuitable for a desktop

The only possible solution I could see would be a flat screen / keyboard / touchpad in addition to the iMac that you could draw / type / gesture etc.

Soldered architectured

So I've heard lots of ideas on here as to what the new iMac will have inside it, all of which have been geared toward things the consumer wants like faster processors and better video cards. With the recent macbook pro's coming out with soldered memory that you can't upgrade I'm a bit surprised nobody is talking about the potential for Apple to create a trend and start doing it with the rest of the mac products.

I've been holding out with my archaic MacBook Pro 1,1 with a bad battery and screen that is shot for the new iMac. However, the thought that I'd have to pay apple to put 32 GB of memory in it as opposed to buying it aftermarket makes me almost want to pull the trigger on the current iMac.

Thoughts?

They solder on components when the thinness doesn't permit clips. The size of the MBPR and Air are what dictate the internals. Notice the MBP is upgradable still. I wouldn't worry about the iMac having soldered RAM. :)

If you want one now, buy it. If you want USB 3, better GFX card and ivy bridge I would wait and see what happens next month.

Personally, reading this article again, it makes sense and **seems** to be fairly reliable since some of the events have already happened since the article was published at the beginning of April.

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/12/04/04/rumor_apple_to_release_new_imacs_with_core_i5_i7_cpus_in_june_or_july.html

That article mentions that it will be redesigned too. Hmmmmmmm
