If you are going to watch it at home anyway, why would you pay $50? That's stupid. You could just wait 3 months and pay $15 - $20 to own a Blu-ray/Digital Copy or rent it for $6.
This the entire reason why, how has that escaped you?

I'd guess the percentage of people who are "lonely guy sitting alone on his laptop" is quite high on this forum. ;)

What makes you think some guy sitting alone on his laptop is "lonely"? I sometimes sit alone on my laptop and am definitely not "lonely". Get over yourselves.

To everyone saying $50 is expensive - the closest alternative you can get today is Prima Cinema.

It costs $35,000 for the hardware alone and then $500 per movie.

$50 doesn't seem so much anymore..

You're missing the point. It's $5-$10 for a movie ticket where I live and about a 5 minute drive to the theater. So no way in hell I'm spending an extra $40-$45 to rent it at home. Where do you get this comparison of $35,000 and $500 per ticket..... who are you Bill Gates?

I feel like the iTunes branding is slowly going away (Apple Music, then Apple Podcasts). I wonder what will happen to the Movies & TV Shows part of the store, in terms of branding?

Doesn't live in a big city. Tickets in LA are at least $10 and that's before ups for 3d, IMAX etc. then there's snacks. And parking. A movie date can easily be $50

Here is what you do. Don't buy over priced snacks for $7 a bag. Bring some of your own candy and a soda/water. Parking... you have to pay for parking at your theater? I would recommend a different theater.

I don't really understand this scheme. If I were already willing to wait 4 weeks, why wouldn't I also be willing to wait another 2 weeks to get it at the regular price?

And for $50, it had better be day of, not 17+ days later.

Stupid studios.

First question: Who still has sub $9 movie ticket prices? For the two of us, it's over $50 for the show, and 'necessities'.

Maybe this will encourage HollyWeird to make better movies? One could hope.

You spend over $50 for the two of you to see a movie?!?! I hope a majority of that is concessions. If so then that is your own fault.

I'll pay that on heartbeat - 4K first run movie - its a steal - if I take my wife and 2 kids with concessions in NY - you are looking at $100-$180
Holy Cow! That's insane! We can do a $5.79 matinee WITH power reclining leather seats (AMC). Add two drinks and refill popcorn and for a family of five and we're under $50.

New Yorker are the very few who would take their family out for $100-$180. That prices is crazy! Hollywood's greed is what stop normal families from going to the theaters.

I think this is a great idea, for people with big families this is a no brainer.
[doublepost=1503067998][/doublepost]
It's not for you, it's for families

Not really. Like I've stated before it's $5 movie tickets in my city on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I can take a family of 8-9 people to the theater and still end up saving $5 instead of dishing out $50. So in theory, no it isn't catered for just big families... it's just a ripoff is what it is.

I think $50 is a bit steep most will take the $30 a couple weeks later. However, I find it interesting that Hollywood studios are going to Apple regarding this deal. It seems might have something to offer with regards to content that attract content creators.

I would have thought they would go to Amazon or Netflix first with this scheme.

Excuse me but Hell No! I go to the movies before 12pm on the weekends and pay $5. Plus AMC Stubbs I get $5 off on Tuesdays AND I get free advance screenings of a lot of movies. N

Exactly! same for me! This $50 crap is outrageous!

I pay over $50 for my family of 4 even during matinee times when you include a large popcorn(shared) and 1-2 drinks.

Nope, thanks. The only way I watch movies in the movie theater is on a massive screen with a dinner and a glass of wine. That's the way to do it. Why would I pay $50 to watch it at home on a smaller screen and without all the service?

Cheaper? Maybe, but not by much.

Obviously this won't be for everyone. But if my wife and I go to the theater for dinner, drinks, and a movie, it costs us $80-100. $50 plus two bottles of wine and dinner is basically the same price, and it means I don't have to drive, park, or sit through previews. I can pause if I need to use the rest room, or rewind if we missed something a character said.

Plus I'd rather watch in 4k HDR on my home TV than a theater screen.

Well a lot of us don't see $25-$50 as a deal. I can go see movies on Tuesdays and Thursdays for $5 a ticket! Take a friend or my girlfriend at its still only $10 and this is for a giant curved screen with great sound and leather reclining chairs too! Yes this is nice for the Brady Bunch family, but not for most. It will also encourage A LOT more piracy!

That's why I was clear about "it can [could]" be a better deal from a cost perspective, and that some considerations, for example: food, beverages, comfort, pausing, have very different value propositions for different people. I want to enjoy a nice cold craft beer, in a glass, I might hate missing a second of a movie so being able to pause and use my own restroom is a big deal.

Speaking as someone who isn't a "Brady Bunch Family", depending on the exact costs and details, this is something that would appeal to my family (there's just 3 of us).

Simple, right?

Just like this:

Obviously this won't be for everyone. But if my wife and I go to the theater for dinner, drinks, and a movie, it costs us $80-100. $50 plus two bottles of wine and dinner is basically the same price, and it means I don't have to drive, park, or sit through previews. $50? Nah, I'll wait.
It's all relative to what your normal movie experience is. If you frequent the local movie theater often, even just for your favorite movie series, you're spending how much for a ticket- between what, $10-15? Then if you are going to purchase the movie a few months later on DVD/Bluray that's another $20-30?

I'd probably skip the theater and just drop $50 on a digital copy a few weeks later instead of dealing with a theater full of people if it means I can watch Star Wars or Avengers Infinite War from the comfort of my own home.

Unless the $50 is just a rental fee. I'd have to think about that one. Cause two tickets for me and wife is at most $25 out of pocket, not $50.

I keep reading posts about $14-18 movie tickets. Where do you guys live, and why are you paying such ridiculous prices?

I think I paid $12 for an IMAX ticket, and maybe $14 for IMAX 3D. If they tried charging more than $10-11 for a regular, non-matinee ticket around here, the theater would be out of business.

Man, that $10/mo Moviepass subscription look so much sweeter now.
that's 'normal' pricing in NYC - here a quick check using fandango $ 84 without ordering food, dealing with driving, etc.

With the big screens and home surround sound I've been wanting this option for a while.
I rather watch in the comfort of my own home. If you have a family of 4 you still come out ahead if you pay $50, have your own food at home and if it allows you to pause the movie, you can take bathroom breaks without missing anything

Surprised studios are pushing for it though because movies will be pirated at a faster rate. I know why theaters dont want it. People would stop going and instead go to their friend house with the big screen.

And you don't have to get there an hour before it starts to get 4 seats together in a reasonable row... Definitely worth it, especially in NY.

50 bucks? Nah will wait for the bluray for half the price with better PQ and better Audio..

You are reading it right. 50 dollars for one (1!) movie.
And not even to buy right? Just to rent??
[doublepost=1503078851][/doublepost]For me anyway, 3 months until the movie I like comes out on iTunes already seems fast if I'm not counting the days. AND for only $20 it's bought and paid for. Not rented. What do you do when you rent a movie you like for $50 and then it's for sale a couple months later? Do you have to buy it like normal? So you just laid $70 for a movie you like on iTunes? Yikes

I honestly can't see myself paying this much for a rental unless it was like a big blockbuster movie I wanted to see right now at home like the avengers or something. I'll be one of the few that freely admits I just don't like going to the movies anymore. Loud annoying kids, people staring at their phones like zombies, the trouble of just having to get up and go, expensive food, etc.

I could see myself doing this for avengers infinity war, inviting everybody over, popping some popcorn and making some hot dogs and just enjoying movie night. But this would be an extremely rare thing. It's not like something I'd do with crappy romantic comedy or something
