I just bought a new high end 15' MacBook Pro with the developer hardware discount and saved the cost of tax (approx $200) and apple care ($350) which is awesome. I also ordered mine custom with a faster hard drive (320 GB/7200RPM).

Some of the hardware discount requirements are on the honor system but I encourage everyone to observe the rules because if people regularly cheat then Apple may be less likely to continue the program. Here are Apple's official words about the developer hardware discount:
ADC Student Members may be eligible to receive a once-per-lifetime discount on a single system to be used only for development purposes. You may not resell or otherwise transfer any items purchased for a period of at least one year from the date of shipment. You may use products that you order under the ADC Hardware Purchase Program only for the purpose of maintaining your company’s IT infrastructure, developing internal software for your Company, and developing software and/or hardware products that will be sold for use with Apple products.
I assume that "company" includes people who develop on their own, so you don't have to have an actual business.

student, like any kind of student? I'm in high school, I'm guessing that doesn't count?
Apple says:
Although we recognize there are many great future developers at the high school level, we are only able to provide the ADC Student Membership to college and university level students at this time.

They also exclude faculty:
The ADC Student Membership is available only to students, and at this time, we do not have any specific memberships geared towards faculty and staff of higher education institutions.

Ppl, ppl, let's be honest consumers of Apple products and not take advantage of this. Way too many ppl wanting to cheat their way through to get lower prices, when you aren't even properly eligible for it.

Though I do understand people wanting to cheat the system, Apple is the one setting the requirements. As long as people meet requirements and live up to their ADC agreement, then there is no problem using the program. It's not like its a super secret club.

I just signed up for ADC Student membership and ordered a MBP. The discounts are amazing but I do want to encourage everyone to be honest and not sign up for ADC just for the discount. I happened to stumble onto the ADC discount while looking through this forum and always wanted to develop on Mac platforms since I'm a Computer Information Systems major.

This is only for students who develop on a mac? Because i know i get a student discount but is not as much as the one in here but actually mac geniuses are coming to my school for a special mac event and will be selling the $2500 MBP (retail) for $1500 for two days only. I also am a CIS student so i mostly do java programming but not too much of other types of development. I wanted to get a MB, but for $1500 for the top MBP model, i might go this route instead. Any opinions or suggestions? Thanks.

Technically, anyone who is a college student and has $100 can get the discount.

this is exactly what i am going to do...but i dont have to pay tax!!!:D

So, do they do a check that you are eligible when you buy the ADC student package, or when you use your one-time discount? I'm a junior in college, but I develop programs for the Mac, and would love to actually use the ADC package.

Yes, Once you purchase the ADC Student Membership for $99, you will get a confirmation email (received mine within 2 hrs) with an activation code. You need to create an ADC account with the given activation code. Afterward, you need to fax a copy of your passport or other official identification (such as a driver's license or student identification) along with a current or upcoming course schedule or other official proof of enrollment from your college/university.

Once you receive a confirmation email, you can place an order for the new :apple: MacBook.

To give you an idea of the length of process, I placed my ADC order on 10/16 @ 9:51PM and was approved on 10/17 @ 7:14AM.

Good Luck! :D

I was reading the ADC membership details and saw this "Student Members may take advantage of a special, one-time hardware discount per lifetime (this benefit is non-renewable and subject to change)." Does the one discount per lifetime mean one discount for each membership lifetime? Or one student will only be able to get one discount period, forever? I see that it says non-renewable, so i'm thinking it is the latter.

Yes it is the latter. They have all your official information (afaik) so you can't just simply go out and buy another membership and expect to get another developer deal...

Which is why I'm saving mine for Nehalem! (others should too...)

applecare

do not buy apple care with adc student discount. buy it from the regular education store it is much cheaper.

If you become a regular developer you can get the deal again, but of course it you don't get the regular developer package just to get a computer—you get it because you need it.

I was thinking of doing this, but will the apple care membership successfully "link" with my ADC-bought MBP, or will they deny it?

Whether you buy it regularly or through ADC, Apple's warranty doesn't change. Which means, you still get the regular 1 year warranty.
Also during the ADC purchase, you have the option to get Apple Care Warranty. With this, I'm assuming they will honor the apple care on ADC-bought MBP.

If you're still uncertain, you can always call ADC Customer Service @ (800) 633 2152.
They were very helpful when I was purchasing my MBP :D

Beside the one-time Apple Hardware Discount, the ADC Student Membership gives access to free copy of Mac OS X. This means, if Snow Leopard comes out before your membership expires (within 1 yr), you also get a free copy of :apple: Snow Leopard :D:D:D

I am a Computer Science major at a school in canada. How much would the discount be for me and how do u signup for the ADC?

Beerbum where do you go to school?

That sounds like an amazing deal! 1500 for a MBP

ok. im very interested in doing this. my fundings are pretty low right now but i do need a new laptop. i have always been interested in writing programs. I'm currently teaching myself web design and SDK for the iphone.

I was wondering if these computers are the same? Since they say the sole purpose of the discount is to get a "system to be used only for development purposes." Or is it the same computer with the same software as regulars?

thanks
