Beerbum where do you go to school?

That sounds like an amazing deal! 1500 for a MBP

opps, i lied... :(

I was looking at the flyer again and it states in small print that the $1500 MBP only applies to the MB134LL/A model, which is one of the older models. It had shown it at retail for $2300 and had a picture of the new MBP so i assumed it was the new one. It says that there will be low priced software and hardware though, but i'm assuming the rest of the stuff will be the same price as it is for all students. I'll see though.

Question: I am a college student, but am not enrolled in any computer classes currently, and am not majoring is CS or CIS or anything like that. I was wondering if there would be anything keeping me from taking advantage of this now? Another words, does apple actually check to see that you are majoring in computer development or are taking a class that has computers involved? Or do they just confirm your enrollment at the school?

Being a student is enough.

Just college student

I am a Computer Science major at a school in canada. How much would the discount be for me and how do u signup for the ADC?

I am a cs student in canada too. Here's the Canadian ADC Select Member Store. For signing up the ADC, purchase the ADC student membership, wait for the activation code to be sent to your email inbox. Join the ADC and remember to fill in your school and your student ID#, then fax your official ID and your course schedule to 1-408-974-7683. If you have any more question, check out this: Student Membership FAQ. :D

Beside the one-time Apple Hardware Discount, the ADC Student Membership gives access to free copy of Mac OS X. This means, if Snow Leopard comes out before your membership expires (within 1 yr), you also get a free copy of :apple: Snow Leopard :D:D:D

I'm a ADC member and I haven't seen this. Can you explain? Thanks.

do they call the school to make sure ur enrolled in those courses or just look at the piece of paper and say yup he goes to school, good enough

Has anyone confirmed you can buy student discounted apple care for an ADC mac?

Just so everyone knows:

I bought the clearance MBP Classic 2.4Ghz model from the Dev store last night. I got an email today explaining I needed to call them for more information. They explained that my $1279 price for the MBP was for developers only and I needed to cancel the order. So I bought it from Amazon for $1444 instead. It was $82 more after taxes, but I tried.

So they really do check on these buys. I tried, but failed.

I don't think they call the school, I faxed my verification of enrollment letter instead of course schedule though. I guess they just look at the letter and confirm you are a student, that's it. They didn't ask us to provide the school phone numbers, I would only imagine how much trouble it is if they need to call each school for the verification. Considering how many people are applying for the student membership. :D

To the people who try to play the system do note that if you make apple stop offering these developer deals you'll be effectively lowering the quantity and quality of future applications. Though if saving a few hundred bucks at apple and osx users expense, then I certainly won't stop you.

What do you mean? Are you actually a student? Or even though you are, and they still need to confirm you're a student developer? How do they confirm you're a developer? Did you not fax your course schedule and official ID to Apple? You need to complete that part to activate your account to be able to use your ADC hardware discount. Well, I don't think I need to worry about it since I am actually a student and computer science major student.

Are there people who seriously think this way? That's just sad. The only thing that would possibly change is that Steve will just have a few less $1,000 bills lodged in his butt crack as he rolls around naked in a pile of money each night. Nothing more.

So the student membership cost $99, and the original price of the new low end MBP is $1999, i just got the student discount $200, yes, $200 on the low end model, plus a free printer which cost $100, so if i sell the printer online i will eventually get the same price of the ADC membership right?

Still doesn't give anyone the right to cheat a system that is meant for REAL developers.

can anyone confirm that these are the same computers? and if they come with and extra software?

i was curious. im getting the ADC student account later this week. It just gives me another reason to learn more about programming. I have very little knowledge but i love learning about web design and iphone SDK.

Jesus people READ about the program and the ADC agreement. You know the URL, now go there and read it if you plan to get a ADC membership.

It is the same computer, exactly the same. They all are, no matter which one you get, it's the same one you would get if you go into the mortar Apple store, except the developer discount only applies in the developer online store.

if you're seriously considering this, go to the website I posted, or the one that everybody else has posted, read the entire thing and see for yourself the prices in the online developer store.

Just remember that it is a ONE in a lifetime discount, and if you're a student you could just as easily get the student discount (which some say it's still $200), and pay for example $1800 for the low end MBP instead of $1700 ($1600 + $99 membership) with the developers subscription. You're only paying $100 more with the student discount option, but you're saving your ADC membership (and discount) for later. This of course assumes you are actually going to use the computer to develop something. If you're not apparently you can still use the discount after proof that you are in fact a student.

Bottom line, read the entire Apple document and decide for yourself. Developer or not, it's ultimately your call.

I'm sure Apple would gladly give a few more discounts if they figure some high school/college student might take a closer look at developing applications on the platform.

Remember that "developers, developers, developers" quote?

it's a two way street. Don't think you're gaming the system. REAL developers hatch from schools.

Do I believe that apple will stop offering said incentives to developers if their rate of people who take advantage of the deal is high compared to growth in actual contributing ADC members? Yes...

Do I believe that apple has a system in place to check up on these incentives to see how effectively they're drawing in quality developers to the platform? also yes, like with most forms of marketing.

Do I believe that if apple decides this form of marketing to developers is ineffective for the cost they'll cancel it? Yep.

Do I think the loss of attracting and helping developers, especially student developers who are rarely backed by any major cooperation hurts the platform? certainly...

Whats the flaw in this line of reasoning again? I could generally care less about the loss to apple (though apple is alot more then steve jobs), their profit margins are already high enough. But if apple decides to cut the program, which they will most certainly do if it is abused heavily, I think this will certainly hurt the platform.

--edit-- all this talk of real developers makes me think of this, Fact is good programmers aren't hatched in schools or anything like that. Schools don't provide enough to actually survive in the industry, just a base line. Good programmers make themselves, mostly on their own time. There are many many notable programmers with little to no college background and there are many who will drop out of CS programs because they can't get a good enough grasp on it at school.

I'm just thinking that some people have reported the student discount at $200 in the brick and mortar stores, but the online store only has a $100 for the MBP.
That's something I didn't take into consideration in my post.

I am thinking of pulling the trigger on the 2.5GHZ MBP. On apples' site, it has it listed for $1599 w/the student discount. Through the developers' site, it is $1439. I am a student at The Art Institute of Portland and am in Web Design and Interactive Media Design program., so i believe i am entitled to the discount, ethically:)

Also, remember that it is $100 more than that price, since you have to pay for the developers' program. I have to exchange my iphone this AM (since it has a crack in it), so i will see what they have in the store.

would we really get the new mac osx snow leopard when it releases next quarter?
