Do I believe that apple will stop offering said incentives to developers if their rate of people who take advantage of the deal is high compared to growth in actual contributing ADC members? Yes...

Wrong! Apple only offers this to students "once per lifetime"

Do I believe that apple has a system in place to check up on these incentives to see how effectively they're drawing in quality developers to the platform? also yes, like with most forms of marketing.

Wrong! Dude, Apple will not disenfranchise potential developers

Do I believe that if apple decides this form of marketing to developers is ineffective for the cost they'll cancel it? Yep.

Wrong! See above.

Do I think the loss of attracting and helping developers, especially student developers who are rarely backed by any major cooperation hurts the platform? certainly...

Finally! You've got shown some correct insight.

Whats the flaw in this line of reasoning again? I could generally care less about the loss to apple (though apple is alot more then steve jobs), their profit margins are already high enough. But if apple decides to cut the program, which they will most certainly do if it is abused heavily, I think this will certainly hurt the platform.

You've got a defeatist mind, my friend - and I'll say this to all you non "REAL" developers. I am a developer (many platforms - iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac) and a I have a buddy who works in IT networking - but had no development experience. With a bit of mentoring, he's now selling apps on the iPhone store (as am I).

Your quotes make me want to slap you across the face like George Patton. Wake up! You're making this into some impossible hill to climb and it's not. You just need to want it and be competent.

I know that, that said I seriously doubt many students are likely to buy more then two notebook in their college career anyway. It still multiplies out to a big enough profit loss if abused by alot of people though. Like the people who started abusing the student discount when they realized you didn't have to prove you were a student. And what happened with those discounts?

Oh? You have higher hopes then me considering how long the Iphone NDA effectively kept information out of developer hands. You should know this well enough as an IPhone developer. Apple does what it thinks is best for its bottom line. Period.

Thanks I guess...

Heh, I'm not trying to say coding is all that hard or there is some magical line that is impossible to cross. I started writing (working) crap in basic when I was 6. Some people tend to be wired twords it and enjoy it while others hate it, but its not something everyone can't learn how to do. If you in the least want to be a developer this deal is obviously geared twords you. If you're just abusing it just to abuse it, I sincerely doubt you "may become a developer" when you clearly have no interest in it.

I think the point to Apple is - it's a good bet to encourage college students to get ahold of the tools, discount and downloads, just in case there's a slight chance they start to dabble. Who knows where that can go.

snowleopard

does any one know if i sign up for developer and snow leopard is released with in the year will i receive it as well. i will sign up in may when i still qualify for it.

The developer store is online only right? I was considering this, but wanted my MBP now. Considering signing up and returning and rebuying the machine with the discount, but don't think I could do it at a brick and mortar store.... oh well... maybe I can save it for later. They've gotta release desktops at some point which aren't the mac mini, and are more affordable than the Mac Pro, right?

ok. i just placed the order for the ADC Student $99. I got the confirmation email that my order is being processed. Do i have to wait to get the box to sign-in to the developers section? Or how does this work now.

Thanks

So i have everything set up. It told me to set student status in my profile, which i did. I had to enter student number and university. But they never asked to fax anything.

and i got this message:
Your ADC Student Membership is now active and you can start accessing your benefits immediately. Depending on your ADC membership level, these include:

so do i have to fax anything in?

apparently not.
perhaps when you place the order they will ask for something, but from that message, seems like you're good to go.
let us know if you ended up faxing something.

I had the same thing, but I still went ahead and faxed my stuff.

For those who signed up, how long does it take for you to receive the box with the software and t-shirt? Also is it sent through UPS or FedEx or just normal mail?

ok everyone, i will just describe the process i went through because people have a lot of questions about this process.

1. You purchase the membership online

2. For me, after about 5 hours I received an email address with an access code to activate my account.

3. Now....if you want to get the hardware discount you can do one of two things....You can fax your current student schedule and some sort of ID to the given fax number(it is best that the ID is a drivers liscense because they want to confirm your age) OR if you are having trouble sending a fax, scan and email your schedule and ID.

4. Within the next day you should get an email saying your assets have been confirmed and your account is active.

5. After about a week and a half to two weeks I recieved a box in the mail from apple with my developer connection box...inside the box you should recieve:
the October edition of the coding CD...maybe it will be the novememebr one now
a copy of Mac OS X
t-shirt that says I :apple: code

hope everyone understnads now!

but a question I have maybe someone else knows....will we get a copy of snow leopard for free since it is coming out in the year that we have the membership?

no future pre-release access (i.e 10.6)
from the student membership FAQ:
Note that the ADC Student Membership does not include code-level technical support, access to pre-release software, or use of the ADC Compatibility Labs and students may not be transferred these benefits by others. If your development requires such benefits, please consider purchasing an ADC Select Membership instead.

I am interested to learn though, i already have osx so i'm not sure i want to sign up for the sake of the tshirt, and i've already ordered my mabook ) anyway - does anyone know how easy it is to get into coding application on OSX? would anyone shed any light on cocoa and xcode etc, or know any good sites I can look up. I'm a CS guy.

^-- Yeah you don't get pre-release, but you get it when it finally ships if your ADC Student membership is still active... and that's what sjsharks13 wanted to know.

It wasnt denied, still says pending. Jus wondering, ima worry wart. And was wondering if anyone got denied, and what was the reason.

This so easy to do

you buy the student membership,
you will get an email to active your product (around 3-5 hours after u bought the memebership)

you log in and activate your product

fax them your student ID and your course schedule

wait 24 hours

go to connect.apple.com log in using ur info
on the bottom right click history
if it shows ADC student membership (pending) in the brackets then your membership is good to go, you an go to ADC store and get your laptop

so more or less once u see your student status (pending) in history section then you know it's accepted and it's been approved and ur good to go

buy your laptop and enjoy :)
