I discovered that Home app automations for HomePods currently don’t support playing podcasts. This means that if I want Apple News Today (or any podcast) to play at the same time every morning, I can’t set it up directly through a Home app automation.
You can still automate music, playlists, and radio stations, but podcasts need to be triggered manually or through workarounds like Shortcuts or AirPlay from another device.
It’s a bit disappointing, but hopefully Apple adds native podcast automation for HomePods in the future.
