The glass is a hit and miss, some people are reporting cracks from a 3 foot drop on a rug, and some people are reporting it survived a rollercoaster fall. According to Apple, it's not just glass, it's 'chemically strengthened' and 'stronger than plastic', and that's why people are making a big deal when it scratches out of nowhere. It doesn't live up to it's hyped expectations.
It's hyped of course. If I want a phone to sell I'm not going to walk on stage and say don't drop it... it's going to break.
But then just because Steve Jobs says the glass is an improvement over the glass used in the 3GS it doesn't mean "Feel free to drop the phone guys, it's never going to break."

Maybe something that should be strong should not be made of glass, just a thought. I know of no bicycles or automobile frames made of glass...just one simple example.

Typical MR "page 1" apologists...let's get this thread to page two or three!

So it is an "honest inquiry," but you only want answers you like and agree with?

Right. Good job, bro.

I am not your bro.

And, no, I want some truth, not typical apologist rhetoric.

I own more apple stuff than you do, I guarantee it. I am simply not a blind fanboy.

i think you are suffering from post release depression.

there really is minimal issues with the iPhone, Apple have done a fantastic job with it.

...seriously? I got my iPhone on Monday and gave my sister my iPhone 3G. She'll get 3+ bars and I'll get 1-2 (3 if I'm lucky). That's on top of the actual antenna issue in the news. When Steve said "don't hold it that way" I actually can't see a practical way to hold the phone without the connection going. I never had a single dropped call on my iPhone 3G, I've had about 10 now on this phone.

And a software update will fix this... how?
And then there is the proximity issue. I've not had this personally but it seems like a painful issue.

Sorry for those who are having problems but my iPhone is working great and if they did "Frack" up on someones iPhone. It wasn't mine :D

I will let those of you who are crying get back to your festival of tears.

Hahahaha. The red highlighted part above is HILARIOUS. Awesome.

I'm not apologizing, you dipstick. My phone has zero problems. The end.

"Simple" example? Did you really just compare a cell phones structure to that of an automobile? An object that is intended to make travel easier yet protect the lives of adults and children? Wow, simply wow. It's glass, they said its stronger than normal glass which it is. Did you expect to run over with a car and it bounce up and smack you in the face? No, it cracks, crumbles, and shatters. Similar to how plastic would do. But going by your comparison then Apple should have made it out of forged metal with reinforced rebar.

I've had a total of... 0 problems with my iPhone 4. Besides finding it a bit uncomfortable to hold, I love it.

So does that make everyone with no problems with their phone a blind fanboy?

No, you could be uninformed, non-technical, an Apple employee or heavy stock holder, or a flat-out liar, any of those are a possibility.

People don't come to a forum to scream from the roof tops that their phone works flawlessly. You won't see Gizmodo or Engadget run a story about people and their normal working phones. It's as simple as that. The problems occurring are over-inflated to say the least. I know people don't wanna hear it, because everyone thinks their problem is the most important one hands down, but I think things are getting blown out of proportion.

I am informed, I'm very technical, I'm jobless. Phone works fine. The compulsive liars might be the trolls here. ;)

If you want truth, why don't you start with your premise? What evidence is there that Apple has fracked-up so badly on the iPhone 4?

Are the problems more widespread than the last two iPhone launches? What percentage of use does the iPhone 4 have worse reception than the iPhone 3GS? How does the defect rate in the sensors and glass compare to the 3GS? Is it more or less scratch and crack resistant than the 3GS in a variety of circumstances?

I'm not defending Apple. All of these answers may provide evidence that they have botched the iPhone 4. But how loud people are bitching on the internet is not evidence on its own.

Seriously, the phone has many issues. Are you not reading the threads here at Mac Rumors?

Yes, they are. People seem to forget how bad the launch went with the iPhone 3G or the 2.0 software bugs(yikes!) or even 3.0 bugs. I remember my first white 3G had proximity issues but I never complained. All phones have bugs period. The best get called out on it.

Compare the Apple to the Evo in this way. If Derek Jeter gets arrested its plastered on ESPN for 3 months. If someone from the Kansas City Royals gets arrested nobody gives a **** and we all keep on living.

Yes, let's make the iPhone screen out of aluminum or titanium! Who cares about opacity issues!

You do realize that even if 20,000 customers have an issue with the phone thats 1% of all purchasers? I ask you to look up the following topic to gain some knowledge on dealing with these issues:

That's just the thing though I am reading them, but my phone has no problems and I'm not making a thread saying my phone is perfect right? All the threads are from the minority of people with iPhone 4's who actually have issues. People with working phones are unlikely to go on macrumors just to say it works.

Seriously, the phone has many issues. Are you not reading the threads here at Mac Rumors?

how does reading the threads here affect his statement that his phone works fine?

you can chalk me up as yet another who is pretty chuffed with the phone - no yellow spots, haven't dropped it yet so can't attest to the fragility issue, no problems with dropped calls or reception so far (I have managed to get the bars to drop by 2 or so by bridging the bottom left seam once or twice - only seems to happen if I'm somewhere with less than good signal).... I do however have a nice looking new phone that runs at light speed compared to my old 3G and packs in a pretty display, useable camera and better battery life to boot.... so what's not to be happy about?

Yes I have read lots of the threads on macrumors, i am aware there are a significant number of people with issues - I'm glad to say I'm not one of them. To try and suggest that anyone who is happy with their phone is an apple fanboy, dumb, incompetent etc etc is ridiculous.
