Has anyone thought of BTO iPhone ? like the MBP, MB ?

So you could buy 2 standard iPhones. Basic and Pro.... then the BTO iPhone with what you want...

maybe ?

I have been expecting this all along as 3G is the only hardware they have actually come out and said will be in the new version. I am hoping for a GPS but I don't have my hopes up.

Unless there is something I missed, they actually haven't come out and said there will be 3G. All the rumors and evidence points to this being highly likely (and by highly I mean like 99%) , but no one from Apple has come out and said, "We are releasing a 3G iPhone next."

For me if 3G is the only selling point, I won't be getting it. At least not for a while, anyway.

If it has GPS to go with that 3G, I'm in. GPS with the satellite imagery, maybe even throw in topographic maps...SLICK. Ability to store them on the phone so you wouldn't need cell towers. Talk about being able to explore...There would never be an excuse for getting lost again.

There's waaay too much expectation for Apple to let this go without countering it, if there isn't a 3G phone coming. If the 9th comes and goes without it, their stock price will get halved.

they said they were working on it.

they said they were working on it.

But they have not said, "The next model we release will have 3G." All they said was that it didn't fit for the first one because it was too big and consumed too much power, but they were working on putting one in. Never said a definitive it'll be next.

Regardless, we're just arguing semantics. It's coming and Steve will announce it Monday.

I have actually thought of that but keep forgetting to mention it. Will AT&T charge for the GPS on the iPhone?

No, because GPS itself is a free, public service. It would be like charging you to plug your phone into a power cord.

And Google Maps is free. The only thing they could charge you for is specialized GPS software of some sort.

gps

from my viewpoint, to charge the prices apple will most likely charge, they will need to do more than just a 3G upgrade with a new enclosure. even an update to the software pre-installed will not be enough to keep apple ahead of the curve. we have seen how cool multi-touch can be, how powerful software can be on a mobile device, how integrated a mobile can be with our media......

the question is; is gps the next cool thing that apple will use to distinguish itself? if it is, it will need to be more than just basic gps.... but what could that be?

side note: i have no faith in the source of this rumor. seems like it is an attempt to be different than other rumor stories to attract hits to the site. do not buy into it at all. investors/wall street would laugh at the apple execs if there was no gps.

Ahh yeah good, thanks for clarifying it. The hype is getting to me. Monday can't get here soon enough so we can put all this speculation to rest.

Which is exactly the GPS everyone is talking about. The iphone already has google maps. Tell me that a cell phone company can't charge for gps and ill point you in the direction of every major us cell phone company who has a gps who does charge for it. Garmin type gps systems are free, I don't get how that works out, but if apple could slip there way into using their gps network, then we'd have something to talk about. Otherwise, GPS is not a big deal because I can pay verizon and have been able to pay verizon a monthly cost to have gps on my phone for over two years...

Sounds like Apple's Department of Misinformation is now in full swing.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. Just a few more days and all will be revealed.

very nice.
I try

That's one of mine too. I love the chart!
Saw it a while ago and thought it apropriate

This is true, but keep in mind that Verizon disabled the GPS in their phones unless you pay for their gps service. While GPS is free, using Verizon's data service to access the GPS is not so they can do this.

The good news is that I don't see Apple allowing anyone to disable a feature of their phones.

Might I ask to all of you: Why do you think that they would spend so much time/money developing cell/wifi location if they're gonna make it obselete in five months? I really can't see GPS coming right now. Maybe in a year, but not now.

Pet peeve.

I find I work better with visual aids.
Haha, I share the same pet peeve. Permission to use the chart (if you made it, that is)?

i couldn't fail to agree with you less.

I did fail to understand you...
But me thinks you definitely want a better camera.
I have (had. I sold it yesterday) 5000 pictures on my 8GB iPhone. 4900 of them were uploaded from my 7MP Canon.
For MY use, the current camera is sufficient. Of course a better lense and maybe user adjustable features would be better, but 3G, GPS and Native Apps are what I really am looking forward to.

You think it all ends Monday? No way. That will just be the start of the whining that it's not available this very second, that it's too expensive and that it doesn't have a frikkin' laser beam attached to it's frikkin' head.

Then will come the speculation about iPhone 3...

just remember the iPod evolved one baby step at a time. I mean the dam thing didnt have a color screen till like 4th or 5th generation. I think we will see 3G this time around nothing else. GPS next year maybe a camera improvement after that. Steve feeds us just enough to keep us happy and toughs it as a world changing feature. The keynote will be overwhelmed of talk of 2.0 Software and how this 3G phone is going to be offered worldwide to keep all the investors happy. Then some .mac updates.

I guess it works into there whole scheme of things. Keep it simple, if you add 1 feature at a time you can make that 1 feature PERFECT.

Um, hate to break you the news, but you're getting ripped off by verizon then.

The only "GPS Network" out there is the Sat. Network created by the U.S. & other Governments. GPS 1.0 is unencodded and free to use by anyone. Only GPS 2.0 is blocked out, and that's because it's military-grade and used by U.S. (& friends) forces only.

If your phone has a real GPS chip inside of it (which is common in Smartphones/PDAs, rare in normal cell phones), any program can access it.

Sure, you could fork over $5 to Verizon to pay to UNLOCK software for it.

But it's very much FREE to use your own software.

GoogleMaps is such a program.

*IF* the 3g iPhone has GPS, it'll be free to use google maps. No Question About It.

Do you understand how the technology works?

There are 24 satellites in orbit that the U.S. Government launched. Each one sends out a signal. Your device takes the signal of at least 3 (optimally 4) of those satellites and calculates it's current position.

This service is free for civilian use thanks to one Mr. Ronald Reagan. All you need is a device to do receive the signals and do the calculating.

The other companies charge you because they enjoy to nickel and dime their customers. They're basically charging for the software that shows the maps, not the network itself.

iPhone has to have GPS just to survive in the market

There's waaay too much expectation for Apple to let this go without countering it, if there isn't a 3G phone coming. If the 9th comes and goes without it, their stock price will get halved.
I would go further though.

The smartphone market is highly competitive right now. I think if Apple comes out with a 3G iPhone that doesn't have GPS or even a better camera that their stock could be similarly in trouble.

I mean think about it for a sec... if iPhone 2.0 comes out without GPS and with the same old 2 Megapixel camera, at that point they will be almost the only smartphones on the market without GPS and a decent camera. Nokia et al. will jump all over them in the press and in advertisements as they should.

Apple really needs these features to survive at this point or at least to stay in the position they have carved out for themselves.

They will likely increase market share anyway, and probably hit the 10 million mark as well, simply because they have quadrupled (or even quintupled at this point), the addressable market for the device with the recent deals in other countries. But without these features, they won't be considered anywhere near "the best smart-phone on the market" which is definitely where Apple sees themselves and precisely where they want to be.

Apple always strives to be "best of class."

IMO if these items are missing, the stock will dive within hours of the SteveNote if not actually during it. ;)

.

Ding ding.

And the iPhone just happens to include Google Maps, which works handily with such functionality.
