To be clear, we still offer licenses for 1Password 7 (Mac and Windows). Don't want to use our subscription service? You don't have to. Just buy a license, they're available in the app upon initial launch when upgrading from a previous version.
Really? That's not what I was told by your support team when I tried to buy a standalone license for Windows:

Hi Abhi,

If you don't want to use a 1Password.com account, I'm sorry but you will not be able to use 1Password on that Windows PC. We now only offer the option of a 1Password.com account on the Windows platform.

I've been using 1Password for years on Mac and iOS, and am in the (slow and painful) process of switching to a competitor's product in large part because of the above email.

Currently I run two password managers, since only 1Password has a few features that I rely on, while the other one is compatible with Windows. It's a nightmare and I can't wait to drop 1Password entirely (the features I need are available in a beta of the other password manager).

Agreed about subscriptions. Long time 1Password full price user that recently jumped ship after their latest release charge and subscription model.

The two substitutes that I found that do not have subscriptions, that are relatively inexpensive, claim to never go to a subscription model, and have basically about the same feature set as 1Password, and in some ways even more features are:

Enpass
Myki

Why didn't you just keep using the standalone version if you already paid for it previously? I have. Works great as it always has. I store the database in my iCloud.

I understand that many people don't like subscriptions but how else should the developer make $? They continue to roll out improvements that have been essentially free for me for many years but that work continued long after and they continue to do so. I was on the sub model for 1 year as I was forced to use a Windows 10 machine (the horror) on a project I was on and needed to be able to have access to my 1P. Once that project was finished, someone at 1P helped me migrate back to standalone w/ iCloud syncing. They never complained or tried to push me to keep the sub.

You guys should really look into the free solutions. I don't really need all the bells and whistles, I just need password generation, storage and autofill. I used to use KeePass which is completely free and lets you store passwords encrypted on your cloud server of choice. The last couple of years I've been using Enpass which is currently free on desktop, with a small fee for the iOS version but one time, no crappy subscription. Works nicely and the devs are always updating and adding new features without asking for money every month.

Hate these subs, no thanks, the built in keychain does a good job for most of us.
They do offer a standalone version. Just download the trial and in it gives option to pay one time price for version. They are the few that still do that but they don't really say it boldly on site. They also are a regular on Macrumors to offer help.

I’ve been confused about this also. I love using 1Password, and I am currently using an older version for Mac and Windows. I would love to upgrade to a newer version, but don’t want to get locked into a subscription. I’ve received mixed signals from them in the past in regards to non subscription licensing.

I haven’t looked lately, but the last time I looked their website had no clear mention of a non subscription offering. If they are trying to hide the non subscription version from their new customers, that leads me to think that I might have to look elsewhere for my password management needs in the future - which is something I truly regret.

I’m pretty sure that I read recently on macrumors that Apple was using 1Password internally, but opted not to use the cloud version either. I like to be in control of my security credentials just as much as Apple would like to be in control of theirs...

Filling in apps is very nice, though why has it taken until iOS 12? Android has had this since 2014 when it was made available in RoboForm.

I'm stuck in RoboForm because of the extremely time-consuming export process peculiar to RoboForm, so this will make things less unpleasant.

Useful. It cements using a being tied into buying a password manager unless keychain gets a better password management system. I wanted to hope the 1password buyout by Apple was true before even more 1pass price hikes.

I'm now hopeful in a few years we'll get an Apple 1pass-esq interface to manage passwords.

Great that the api has been opened up that is very useful. Can’t wait for us all to get access to the updated 1Password app.

I didn’t like the subscription model either, and looked and tried LastPass and Dashlane. Gave each about a month to try but went straight back to 1Password. I much prefer how 1Password handles this. We now use it with a Business license and our staff gets access to a family license. Seems a very fair deal for a great product. And the shared vaults are awesome

So do I - the day 1pasword forces me to subscribe they will lose me as a customer (and sadly I suspect this time will come sooner rather than later).

But FYI even though they dont promote it on their website (I assume they see it as a legacy solution) there still is a way to get a regular licence for a once off payment (you don’t have access to their cloud service, but I personally don’t care as I think iCloud sync is a more elegant solution anyway).

We sell licenses for 1Password 7, both Mac and Windows. Don't want to use our subscription product? You can purchase a license instead. Nothing has changed in that regard.

$49.99 charge for ver. 7 after I've paid full price for Mac and iOS versions? No thanks.

Who else is an idiot and went to settings and could not find 1Password as an option??? Oh only me? I should have read all the way to the bottom first.
Nope, I followed the instructions also.........then read to the end of the article:/

To all the comments saying iOS Keychain password management is just as good as 1Password I have to respectively disagree.

1Password does so much more than the keychain.
  • Cross platform support.
  • Teams and family support.
  • Share vaults between family members. We have a family vault so that logins can be accessed by me and my wife. I still have my own vault for my personal accounts. I also have a work vault for work logins.
  • Store credit cards.
  • Store passports, driving license detail and other ID.
  • Secure notes for storing important details.
  • Store bank accounts details.
  • Store software licenses.
  • Built in multi-factor authentication generation.
  • Web access to all my data as well as platform specific native apps.
  • Store router and WiFi details.
  • Store sever details.
  • Remembers old passwords for each login.
  • Generate a password without needing to create an account.
  • Access passwords and all other stored data at anytime unlike keychain.
I use everyone of those features. My life is stored in here. I trust 1Password with my data and have read their security documents and believe the data is extremely secure. Even if it was stolen you would still have to breach the encryption which is highly unlikely especially with my password and key.

I used to use keychain until Safari's issue (for me) of pausing and reloading the page each time I swipe back in most forums made me move to Firefox on my laptop.

Then I realised I'd like a password manager that worked outside of the locked ecosystem. I tried LastPass (the free version) and didn't get on with it. I'm currently using Bitwarden (also the free version) and I think it's great. Works well in Firefox and in Safari, although not quite as seamless as the keychain passwords. Bitwarden keeps improving too, as they now have password history I believe and I've read that integration with iOS12 is coming soon.

Personally, I'd prefer to see keychain opened up to third parties (such as Firefox) rather than the OS being opened up to 3rd party password managers, but I'll take what I get.

I prefer mSecure. It’s more highly rated by more people on the App Store, which is why I chose it. I tried 1password recently and immediately went back to mSecure.

I hope mSecure is supported. If not, it still won’t entice me to switch to something else.

Oh you know what I hate about automatic password management? When for whatever reason the password manager doesn't offer to automatically insert your password, or when you're in a situation where you need to use someone else's computer or phone because yours isn't working/available (usually and urgent, emergency situation so it's important). And then you're screwed. You're basically locked out of all of your accounts. And when pretty much anything requires an account, it means that anything online requires your password manager's cooperation, otherwise you're out of luck.

My first experience was here on MacRumors. Safari proposed me a password that looked like "0w9u09sdugpaugfpodsfiugspdfgu8sdpfoiugsdfpovjz;flvjds;lvhsdfl" and I was like okay, whatever, if you can remember that, then I don't need to. Then I log in, and it won't fill in the password. And just like that I was locked out. Happened many times since, but I don't use it for important accounts, just for disposable ones that I don't care about (which might as well just have the same password).

Remember your passwords, or write them down on paper, or at least write reminders. That's still the only reliable way to do this.

Honestly, until keychain can work in Chrome I'm sticking to 1Password, although I bought outright and don't pay a monthly subscription

I was thinking the same thing, especially since someone claiming to be from the 1password team jumped in so quickly to defend any criticism.

Well someone had to grant MacRumors access to the beta - although I don't know why this is being met with criticism. It's a great sign that Apple is allowing access to 3rd parties, and not a lot of people knew about that.

Very excited about this feature. Weird it took so long, but I'll take it.

But what has changed is the cost of purchasing a license. I've been using 1Password for 8 years, and for the past 4 years I've had a family license, upgrading to every paid new release. This bi-annual (or so) expense has been quite modest compared to what I will need to pay from now on, $4.99 per month, since there is no family licence available for 1Password 7. I fully understand that you need a steady income (don't we all), but I find your current pricing quite unreasonable compared to what your costumers have been used to in the past. A sudden doubling or tripling of the cost is not a nice way to thank your loyal customers.

Having said that, I truly love 1Password, and I use this magnificent piece of software tens of times every single day, on my Macs, iPad and iPhone. But I'm in no hurry updating from v6 to v7...
