Mainland Europe are quite lucky, but us Brits have had a bad time with our connections. It's only in recent years that the public has had access to anything above 8mbps. It was only in July this month that we could finally upgrade from our 512kbps connection!

What surprises me are the bad upload speeds in the US. The down:up ratio is kinda steep.

Yep, our uploads on data have always been poor (same w/3G as well).

I have fast speed for my area at home, but at work (which is only 1.5 miles away) I cannot get anything faster then 3M down w/.5m up.
Business you see, cannot get the packages that residential users get. Makes no sense AT&T btw.

At any rate, I see these speeds from across the globe and can't help but be envious.

Im enviously looking at Virgin Media Fibre optic broadband. 50 meg speeds and unlimited downloads with 100 megs coming in the future. Im really happy with my service and my ISP have been great since i have been with them which is going on 5 years now. However as i get my broadband through a BT phoneline and live a fair distance away from the exchange i only get 8meg speeds on an up to 24 meg line. This isn't my ISPs fault but that Virgin deal does look good :D

I've only heard good things about Virgin. My girlfriend had their fibre optic service whilst at uni and it really was blisteringly fast stuff. A ping of 5 for most games.

Yeah same here. A few people at work have it and swear by it. My local exchange is about to be upgraded to 21CN at the end of march 2011 though so i may wait and see what that brings. Plus My ISP are starting to offer FTTC solutions too. But they are a wee bit expensive at the moment

And i thought you guys had rubbish speeds over there ? :p

If that is real, maybe that is a T1 line which is not indicative of standard at-home speeds?

Limestone Networks is a datacenter, It's a VPS I have. Nobody ever said it had to be your home connection.

It's a shame there's such a disparity in speed. The annoying exponentiality of computer systems strike again.

I'm hopefully upgrading to fibre when it gets enabled at my telephone exchange, but the UK really is behind in terms of connectivity.

My city is only about forty years old but even new houses being built are not getting FTTH off the bat.

If its Milton Keynes then it should be too long to wait. I'm on the FTTP Bradwell Abbey exchange trial which is why I'm at 60Mb+ :D and not 1.8Mb :(

Um. A T1 is only 1.5 mbit/sec.

Funny how stuff gets stuck in the minds of the public. T1 wasn't even "fast" 10 years ago.

A T3 is 45mbit/sec, and 10 years ago would have run you maybe $5000/month for the line and an Internet connection.

Amazing how far things have come. I've got nearly double that speed for about $60/month.

Who needs fibre? Coax is good for a bit more. Theoretical max with Docsis 3.0 is 120 mbit/sec. Cox recently started bonding 3 channels in San Diego (max is 4) so theoretical max is 90mbit/sec. And I consistently get 70+ to speedtest.net.

I'm on the Premier plan, which is advertised as 30mbit/sec down and 5 mbit/sec up. As you can see, they are over-delivering, which they have for as long as I can remember, at least here in San Diego.

I have no idea why my upload is faster than my down. I should have 25/25...

My ISP, Cox Communications, has a technology called SpeedBoost which gives you gobs of bandwidth for the first 30 seconds or so of a download, but then it throttles it back after that. This makes it impossible to get a true measure of bandwidth, since the bandwidth tests don't run long enough for SpeedBoost to end. I don't know if other ISPs have this, too.

Kinda frustrating.

Speed in Atlanta, GA

Atlanta, GA
Download 1.93Mb/s
Upload 0.25Mb/s
ping 25 ms

ISP: BellSouth.net (now owned by AT&T)
rating: 2.6/5 start
Distance ~50mi

I would have added an image, but don't have
a URL to post it on.

okay, i feel like i'm getting ripped off in comparison to most of your speeds. $60 a month for this.

FYI, there is a link from the speedtest.net that will display your image if you place it in image brackets, no hosting needed. Quote someone who has posted a pic and you'll see it in their post.
