Do Apple replaces iPhones for scuffs and other crap if its right out of the box?

I have one scratch in the top of the iPhone, it's proper massive and 5-6 dots on the back of the iPhone. :( Also some metal next to the bands can be seen...

I like both but the white just stands out too much for my taste, not hard for people to spot it and could attract some unwanted attention.

mine is holding up perfectly. It has no scuffs (besides the one it was shipped with), scratches or anything. I only carry it in a leather pouch when I drive with my scooter.

So far, so good

I have a black iPhone 5, I have been carrying it naked in my pocket since launch day. It is holding up pretty well at the moment.

When it arrived, it was totally pristine. Now it has three tiny blemishes that some other people can't even see, but I can see them. One is a nick on the chamfer near the Lightning port, this nick is black but can reflect light and can be felt with the fingernail. One is a nick on the chamfer on the top, it is silver-colored but nearly microscopic. And finally, there is some silver color showing around the SIM card slot, just a tiny bit.

I also know what caused each of the three blemishes. 1. Fumbling with the lightning plug in the dark. 2. Dropping on the floor from about 2 feet (fell out of pocket). 3. Merely installing a new SIM card.

Mine was perfect out of the box. I had it in a case for two weeks, now out of a case for about four days, and I've gotten a few (three) tiny, tiny tiny spots in the chamfered edge that now show silver. At a glance, it looks like nothing, or a couple specks of dust, but upon close inspection, they are tiny nicks.

Mine will be going back in a case, because if it looks like this after four days of careful use, I don't want to know what it would look like after 6 months of nudity.

Luckily the case I use is extremely slim and clear, so it still looks/feels somewhat natural.

to return or not to return?

I got my white 64 gig phone on launch day and I have had it naked at times and kept it in a case-mate case and I have been very careful with it. It is either in my pocket or in a separate pocket in my purse. After 2.5 weeks, there are a lot little nicks on the bezel of the aluminum. And it looks as if the edge of the bezel is starting to lift up because I am noticing that lint from my pocket is being caught where the bezel meets the white edge.

I really do not want to return it again (I had a badly scuffed phone out of the box), but I am afraid that the edge will get worse after the 30 day return period and I will be forced to get a refurb.

What case do you have?

Thanks!

To those who love to rock their iphone 5 naked, how are they holding up so far? Any scuffs or scratches?

I'm thinking of reserving for store pick up, but can't decide on which colour. Saying that though, I'll probably add Applecare anyway.

Been using my black iPhone 5 since I received it on launch day and its still like new, no scratches, scuffs. I think the whole easily scuffed issue is getting blown out of proportion some what. At the end of the day its a £500+ item, you should treat it carefully and if you do then its going to be hard to scratch/scuff. Put it in a pocket with coins and keys, then you've only yourself to blame for scratches etc IMO.

I visited an Apple store today and decided to take a look on how their naked iPhones are holding up. After all they get the most abuse so it is a fair assessment to see how naked iPhones hold up in general. They were holding up pretty well, but the area around the dock connector. Both black and white are pictured for reference, and to me it seems that the white holds up the best.

It's not that the white is holding up well, it's just the scratches aren't as noticable. To be honest, the wear is EXACTLY what I expected. Apple should have anodized the black with a thicker coating. I have anodized equipment that I own that have just begun showing wear, and that was after HEAVY outdoor use. It's obvious that there are different ways to anodize a product.

I've had my black iPhone 5 since day one, and it's perfect still because I've taken care of it.

I'm going to put this bluntly. Take care of your ****ing phones and quit being bitches.

My first iPhone 5 64GB - Black had scratches showing silver on the top antenna band. I exchanged it for a white box version with only one scratch on the back. I was not given a choice of phones to swap.

My replacement iPhone 5 64GB - Black is completely pampered. Pocketed by itself. I even place it on cloth or a napkin when out of pocket. Its now showing thinning of the anodized coating near the screen and at the band spacers. I also got a mysterious nick right above the speaker.

I take care of my phones! I've re-sold every smart phone I've owned since Nokia s60 and feedback has always been the phones are in mint condition. In fact, I just sold my iPhone 4S 64GB - Black (Factory Unlocked) and iPhone 4S 64GB - White on eBay and received good feedback.

The iPhone 5 is unusually delicate or the anodized coating is defective.

Well for what it's worth. Had my white iP5 just over a week now. Been using it naked and it's still spotless.

I've been careful with it so I don't drop it. No doubt the chance of this will increase once the honeymoon period is over, but I suppose that is why I paid for AppleCare.

3 weeks naked with black & slate.....was perfect out of box, but now has 2 scuff marks, very small ones but still annoying since all i do with it is rest it on comfy desk at work or it's in my pocket against a soft wallet.

As it is now i am not too bothered, but i'm just worried what it's going to be like in 6 months time......don't want the whole thing to have marks everywhere, especially when i am ultra careful......and i don't want a case either cos they make it ugly!

Going with a case STAT!! Have now two friends with scratched edges. Those black anodized edges are apparently easily flawed.

even the act of putting on a case (once or twice) will scratch up the chamfered edges. i use an incipio feather case on the black ip5, and have noticed all sorts of minor scratching. yay.

I have applecare+. Do the rest of you guys who have it still use a case? i figure the money is spend on cases can just go towards a $50 replacement next year before i sell it

Nope. This is the first time I've bought apple care on any apple product and it's solely because I wanted to go caseless.

There are a couple nicks on the chamfered edge now. I also just picked up a snap-on case.

I bought a case for my iphone before I got the actual phone, and after using it for a day I have decided I have to go naked. The feel of the phone is too amazing.

Agree 100%. I have a case for instances when I really need one but otherwise, I carry and use it naked.

Mine was perfect (black) out of the box. 3 weeks later there are 2 scuff marks on the chamfered edge. I am a careful user and this phone is clearly not going to hold up for the remaining 23 months of my contract.

I always felt I could throw my iPhone 4 around as it was rock solid. The iPhone 5 however feels so fragile.... Which it is :/

This is clearly a design fault and should be fixed for the 5S

My Otterbox Commuter came in 2 days after I got my 5 and I've been using it ever since. I do miss the light and thin feeling (although the 5 is still lighter with the case than my 4S was naked), and the Commuter really doesn't add all that much bulk to it.

The 5 is just so sleek looking though, it's like a stealth bomber (well, the black version which is what I have).

I think I'm going to take it out of the case when I'm home, so I can clean it and appreciate the design beauty, then re-case it when leaving the house..anyone else follow a similar regiment?

I'd love to not use a case at all, but I don't have AC and I just know that it would bang something in my car or accidently drop or smack into something, break the screen or get scratched and have no resell value..plus just look terrible.

My wife has the commuter case. I got a speck candyshell from amazon today. The candyshell is a lot thinner and more sleek. I can safely say they offer similar amount of protection. The Otterbox only has one thing that's better and that's covered ports.
