Five years in, and I'm not there yet.
The funny thing is, I had no idea that you had to have 500 post to have an avatar.

Yup. That's Lucy. My dachshund. And that's her bed, which is an old comforter from my college days.
And yes - she sleeps under it every night.

This isn't accurate for the 500th post that counts towards getting an avatar if you have ever posted in the PRSI forum.
Or the console and marketplace threads and threads that have been sent to wasteland.
For me the difference was only about 50 posts. My "official" 500th post was this one, where I was confused about the same problem -- how long does it take for your avatar to upload?
In my case, it looks like it took about 12 hours.
Using Dr. Q's search technique, the 500th post I made was this one. Both posts came pretty close to six months after I registered.
It looks like I've kept up just about the same rate since then -- I'm now closing in on 5,000 posts.
Maybe members should earn an avatar for each 500 posts. You'd soon have ten of them down the side of your posts.
That would make mad jew's posts many times taller than our displays!

It took me from August 2, 2004 to September 28, 2004 to reach 500 posts, so just under 2 months. I went through a few avatars, but have had my current one for about 3 1/2 years, barring some sporadic changes.

If I'm doing my searching right, I joined in September 2003, and didn't get my avatar until sometime around June/July 2005, so nearly 2 years.
I probably never would have gotten there if it weren't for the 2004 PRSI shutdown that led to me getting my first 100 and getting slightly more involved outside of the PRSI forums.

How about 1px per post? So you get an avatar after your first post, but its only 1px x 1px. By the time you reach 500 you have a decent sized avatar, but even at 10,000 posts its not crazy big.

Some joker suggested that approach a few years ago, but with a different growth rate. Either way, mad jew's avatar would be rather large.
