They are not countries full stop.

As it stands, it's not even debatable.

Scotland is NOT a country.

iGAV your link goes to a site listing the only 192 countries as recognized by th US government. Jersey is not listed so which country do yoy think we come under?

You'll forgive me if I don't accept the US's opinion as undebateable.

I love how people state countries as if, one places counts as the whole. :)

Canada and USA are hugh, you are telling me you have been to MOST of the cities, states, towns, provinces. I don't think so. Same with Europe and the Middle east.

With this logic I have been to all the 5 continents. ;) :)

well, for the purpose of a thread like this, one place/city does count as the whole. how else would you count how many countries you've been to? if going to a city in a country for a visit and not for transit isn't sufficient to count having been to the country, most of us probably haven't "been" to the country we were born.

we can re-start the thread again and count the number of cities we've spent more than a day in. ;)

The question was how many countries have you been to? If you've been to New York, then you've been to the USA. There's no way to have been to New York and not been to the USA.

You seem to want to define "been to" for a country as most of the cities. That's not what most would expect as the interpretation of this question. However, if we run with that then have you "been to" all the places in New York or just a few parts of Manhatttan? It amazes me how people count just a few places in a city as the whole... ;)

I'm 35, living in Norway.

Been to:
- England
- Scotland
- France
- Belgium
- Luxembourg
- Netherlands/Holland
- BRD (West-Germany)
- Germany
- Yugoslavia (Montenegro)
- Monaco
- Spain (Canary Islands)
- Greece (Korfu)
- Egypt
- Italy (Vatican City was closed the day we were in Rome :()
- Switzerland
- Austria
- Lichtenstein
- Sweden
- Denmark

in alphabetical order:

Andorra
Austria
Belgium
Botswana
Canada
Croatia
Denmark
France
Germany
Greece
Israel
Italy
Lichtenstein
Luxembourg
Namibia
Netherlands
San Marino
Slovenia
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland
UK
USA
Vatican City
West Germany
Yugoslavia

and I'm with iGAV, UK counts as one (and i've been to all 3), as the others are not recognized as independent entities (e.g. UN representation). Otherwise US states should be counted separately and so many other "entities" that have some degree off regional independence. I'm not sure about "territories" and the such (e.g., puerto rico, virgin islands, in my case)

oh, of course the obvious follow up is that England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales should give up three spots in the world cup qualifiers ;)

Most people who come to Washington DC never see much that's off the Mall. I've lived here most of my life and I've only once crossed the Anacostia.

Of course, you're joking, but it goes to a kind of fair point. Just because I've been somewhere doesn't necessarily mean I've experienced all that much about it. But what's important to experience for one person may be entirely different for another person. Someone who's really into hiking might think along the lines that you haven't really been somewhere until you've gotten out into the countryside and tromped about a bit. Someone really into art would concentrate on museums or contemporary shows or some other aspect of art. Someone really into battleships would never skip the Vasa Museum in Stockholm. Someone really into rocks (like my ex-girlfriend) would break down in tears at the thought of going to Ireland and not seeing New Grange, or going to France and not seeing Les Alignments . One could argue that you haven't been somewhere unless you've had a real conversation with a local, preferably a heated political discussion fueled by the local alcohol of choice.

I'm the first to admit the premise of my original question is silly. But, I still think it's fun.

If they did that they might actually win something,at least Giggs could play.Maybe some kind of tie up with Ireland would help too.Mind you it would break the U.K's stranglehold on FIFA.

Ive been to Portugal twice..

specifically lisbon, mafra, and some northern cities like coimbra (i think thats how u spell it) :p

That is some logic you have there, that means if I visited NYC for a day I have seen the States. I must say Alaska has some beautiful buildings. ;) :)

If you have seen a majority standing of states or at least the important one, which shall also include cities then YES, you have indeed visited the place. Not just some stop over for a few hours. <-- what is that? ;) :)

If I were to use your logic then heck I have been to Mexico, USA, South America, Canada, UK, Europe, Africa, India, Russia. Only Australia would not be on my list. ;) :)

Heck I visited the entire world before 30. :D

I've only been to 7 countries... :(

Switzerland (have Swiss citizenship)
Sweden
Norway
Germany
Finland
Japan (live now)
USA (born & used to live)
Guam (part of the US but no one really knows about it)

My passport will expire next year, but all the pages are full. Japanese immigration got a little pissed because there was no room for my visa and re-entry permit when I got them renewed :D

i think it was made fairly clear at the beginning that transit stops don't count.

it gets a bit subjective when you start getting into "majority" and "important" stuff, no?

it's not a perfect metric but we aren't really trying to gauge anything significant - just a fun thread, that's all. :)

What if it was a transit stop however due to flight delays you have to stay in the place for a day, that can count. Not that I have included any of those.

Though one can say otherwise. ;)

Oh well whatever. :)

I drove through Canada twice. Once to geet there, once to get back. Did you know border guards can be rude?

:)

When I went to Canada, there was 8 of us. My brother and 3 of his friends (all white) in his car, and me and 3 of my Chilean friends (spelling... they are from Chile, but are American) in my car. Needless to say, my brother's car had no problems getting into Canada. My car didn't. The border lady asked to see their passports, not mine, and looked at me as if I was being kidnapped. :)

Oddly enough, going back into the US, they didn't ask for anything and welcomed us back in quite nice. And didn't look in my trunk and see the cases of Molson XXX. :) :)
