The question was how many countries have you been to? If you've been to New York, then you've been to the USA. There's no way to have been to New York and not been to the USA.

You seem to want to define "been to" for a country as most of the cities. That's not what most would expect as the interpretation of this question. However, if we run with that then have you "been to" all the places in New York or just a few parts of Manhatttan? It amazes me how people count just a few places in a city as the whole... ;)

well, TECHNCALLY it is possible to visit new york but not the usa, as long as your time is spent in the UN Headquarters, and you arrive and leave without stepping off the UN ground, as it's international territory and not part of the states...

:p

Nope. Europe and Asia are on the same plate (the Eurasian). Not that you're wrong though. The Urals and Caucasus are the current border between Europe and Asia. However, those borders have been defined in a number of different ways through history.

I'm 26, and have been working as a consultant for the past 4 1/2 years. That has given me the oportunity to visit several countries AND be paid to do it ;)

This is soooo true. The Irish kick ass, they are incredibly friendly, and there's nothing that compares to Temple Bar in Dublin...

OK so we've had plenty of lists now, what about hearing some impressions of the places we've been to.

Malta's come up a few time. I thought it was great. The odd mix of Arab and British cultures was interesting. The waiter in our hotel was quite obviously an Arab but had learnt perfect English with a broad geordie accent!

I remember thinking it was a shame that the place was such a mess as far as housing went but understand this is down to some odd tax advantage to never quite finishing your house.

The local guide also told of her despair that the people were being held back financially by the Church locally that still encouraged them to give all their money to it when a family member was ill rather than encouraging people to save for medical treatment. She had a very sad story of her father dieing from a curable cancer but not being able to afford the treatment because when they heard the first thing her parents did was to give all their savings to the Church thinking God would save him. He didn't.

The other thing I remember was that the people would stick to their routines the bus driver seemed to feel that getting to town on time was worth the risk of overtaking on cliff-top roads and no matter what you did, from hanging a do not disturd sign to barricading the door with furniture, the maid would clean the room daily. I was in the shower one day and heard her call as she came into our room so called back saying I'd only be a minute. Next thing I know she's walked into the bathroom and changes the towels and fold the toilet roll etc. while I'm standing right there behind the glass screen.

ok, i'll join in the fun. lemme think...

USA
Japan
France
England
Italy
Vatican City

I only spoke the language of USA and UK. I spoke a little japanese at the time, but have since forgotten it. my skills were limited anyway. in addition, I didnt speak spanish at the time of travel through latin europe, but if i went to italy now i'd get along a bit more than i did last time. i can read italian on my good days ;). i'm going to spain soon, though, so i'll have to add that under my belt once it's official.

Ok, here goes:

Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Singapore

United Kingdom (England, Wales and Scotland :D), France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Luxembourg, Belgium, Netherlands

Egypt, Uganda, Congo (Democratic Republic), Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa

USA, Canada

That's 25 without spamming :). I've lived in 3 of them (Australia, UK and Canada).

I'm nearly 35 and with family and business responsibilities these days I don't see the count increasing any time soon (I may add Fiji to the list this winter though :p).
