what's better for the battery: to run off of the power supply or off of the battery?

Both!

Use your battery, but preferably not more than one cycle a day.
People that always run on power, kill their battery, people that only use on battery wear out their battery.

ok then. just got this mbp after having used windows. so much to learn!

im worried

hi guys, i bought my MBP 13" Sep 2009

coconut says:

Current Battery capacity: 4727 mAh
Original Battery capacity: 5450 mAh

its a 86%

with 75 battery-loadcicles

it says 6 months old...

i try to calibrate but nothing changes, someone had some tips for me?, from the first discharge and fully charge i note the mAh goes down..:confused:

You're still over 80% mark, so you're fine.

Complete info on how to calibrate you Mac products!!!

:apple: MACS ROCK...

Here is the article on how to calibrate any and all mac products (well almost all) LOL :)
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490

PS. "The built-in battery in the new 13-, 15-, and 17-inch MacBook Pro is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at up to 1000 full charge and discharge cycles."
http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html

Contact me for any additional info or help... I can't make any promises but I can try! :D

:apple: BIG TIME!!!

When should I expect to replace my macbook battery. I would say 2/3 the time I use my machine (on almost all the time) it's from the adapter. But when I use the battery for power, I usually use the machine until the battery is more than 50% gone.

Right now my iStat says me battery has "41 Cycles". How many will/should it last? How much should I expect to replace it?

I was down to 658mAh after only 35cycles in a little over a year and the Genius in SoHo gave me a hassle about replacing it... Worst applecare experience to date

i just finished reading the whole thread,

i'm just going to clarify for the "Current Battery Capacity"
is it after plugging in for 100% battery charged??

i download the coconut battery and used it bcoz im worried also about my battry...

so, i check each time in coconut batry for my status
but i found out that when my battery goes down the "Current Battery Capacity" also goes down but the "Original Battery Capacity" is fixed.

after i download the coconut it said i have:
66 cycles w/ 93% (45% displyd on battry icon), after 30 mins
it gives me: 67 cycles w/ 92% (29% displayd on batry icon)

is it normal the "Current Battry Capacity" will change also as the battry depleted or must be fixed also to check d real battry life??

this one goes along w/ the system provider, it matches w/ coconut battry for the status.

Im using 2.53ghz 13" MBP.

Kindly clarify for my queries and confusion. thanks a lot

^^^^

Are you looking at Current battery charge or actually looking at current battery capacity?

The current charge will go down but the current capacity should not go down as the charge goes down. If it does it could just be a matter of the program not reporting correctly for your battery/computer.

The battery health (current battery capacity) will jump around but mostly within +/- 5%. Anymore and I'd do a battery calibration (basically what I do is run it down till standby, plug it in, charge to 100%, not following word by word on apple's site but it works for me) and see if that solves it, if not, you may need a new battery.

That's a good point I guess I should have expanded upon. Or maybe your point is different then mine.

In my experience the current capacity rating does not change over the course of a specific battery cycle. However it does change constantly from cycle to cycle. If that doesn't quite make sense I can try to expand on that.

thanks for the replies...

sorry guys but the one i mentioned for changing in Current batery Cpacity, its true. i just did the battery calibration and here is the list:

100% battry charge and using the Coconut battry
21:00 CBCpcity 5112, OBCpcty 5450 = 93%
21:10 CBCpcity 5115, OBCpcty 5450 = 93%
21:50 CBCpcity 5095, OBCpcty 5450 = 93%
21:10 CBCpcity 5107, OBCpcty 5450 = 93%

and i found out that my battery depleted fast, from 100% to 40% in 1 hr...
this is a 5 mos. old MBP w/ 68 cycles.

i try to calibrate again maybe tommorow to check if there is an improvement.

please help or let me understand to deal this. thank you

Uh, how often are you calibrating? You should only do this once a month. Also, it only helps with getting a more accurate reading. It won't "fix" the battery, if it has a problem. If you're calibrating frequently, you may have messed up your battery.

i just did it once for this month...

thank you for reminding me.
maybe i knew some might of the problems, its 10% now and i'll w8 for it to off then i charge tonyt.

let me check tommorow if the battry will drain fast...
i'll post for update.

thanks a lot

I think we're on the same point but we had different observations.

I remember on my old MacBook (Plastic/Black), the battery health would not change at all for dozens of cycles. However, for the newer systems like my current MacBook Air and my former 17" uMBP (The first one that came out), it did jump around a little but nothing outside a +/-5% range.

Okay.. I just re-read your thing and I'm a little confused. The system reports a percentage by reading the current capacity with the designed... so if the current changes, (depending on how much) the percentage might change too. If it changes like 1 mAh, then obviously its too small for a % to appear.

What I'm saying is that if I fully charge my MacBook (Core2Duo white plastic 3 years old) and then check capacity (i.e. battery health) I get a number that stays the same throughout the use of the computer until the next time I charge the battery.

another observation, my display for time duration of my battry sometimes it goes up sometimes goes down, from 5hrs to 2hrs to 3hrs.

is this normal, or are you experiencing this?

i like to show also the window for coconut battry display so that you can see how my current battery cpcity change. i'm sorry but i dont know how to capture.

:(:(:(
