Thanks, everyone! Ya'll convinced me! Now just have to try to convince the wife why our bill will go up ($30/month on Next) or why we'll lose much data (old 2-year route) but keep same bill.

My next question: will the 16GB fill up quicker than previous phones (camera take pics that are larger in size maybe, apps or other things larger in size)?

I was thinking 16 (cheap-that's the route I usually take ha) I'm leaning more towards the 64 now.

Dude, 64. 16 is too small. And that sweet new camera is gonna need some space to deposit pictures and video.

If you don't buy it along with the phone, you need to take the phone into an Apple store to purchase it?

Not sure if the last part was a question or not but if so yes you do. You have 60 days from billing/shipping date to have them run a diagnostic scan and purchase the AppleCare+, or you can call them and they will do it remotely over the phone. #

Applecare is better. It covers everything. Even accidental drops.

Trying to decide what's best, Applecare or insurance through AT&T (I guess $7/month right).

How many of you plan on getting Applecare? I like my phone "naked" so I believe I need some kind of "safety net".

I had a rash of bad luck in '14 on my 5. Within 3 months I had to replace my phone twice! If I didn't have apple care that would've been over 500 bills to replace

I'm all about apple care

Well until the can replace the display assembly in-store, $350. Or is it $379? I forget.

The current out-of-warranty costs are the following :
Out-of-warranty* cost:

iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5: $269
iPhone 4s: $199
iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, Original iPhone: $149
https://www.apple.com/support/iphone/repair/other/

Apple also rolled out a nationwide 5s display replacement in store program on July 2014, hopefully this happens quicker for the 6 and 6+ since the repair machinery is already installed in the stores.

You might as well buy a new phone for the price of the deductible+monthly fee.

I'm with you. Att is too expensive! and having to pay a fee for 2 years plus $200 deductible is way too much! Applecare for $99 is not bad at all and the deductible is affordable. I honestly don't trust Att refurbished phones. Apple service is way better.

Correct, but how much was an OOW iPhone 5s replacement earlier this year? As the time wears on the cost of replacement goes down. I'm pretty sure for the current iPhone at the time the OOW cost was $300+.

Well they started doing it with the 5 before the iPhone 5s and 5c came out, but they couldn't do the 5s and 5c until Apple started shipping them the phones and reprogramed the machines since with the 5s they now have to connect another cable (Touch ID). They will have to reteach the machines again for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus because of the bigger sizes and placement of display cables. Plus, they still need to get the parts in.

I think they will start near the beginning of 2015 replacing the glass if cracked.

I'll be adding it to my purchase when I pick up my space gray 64gb 6 on Friday.
I was so excited when my order finally went through Friday morning I forgot all about it. Or maybe it was because I'd been up for an hour an a half in the middle of the night:eek:... Anyways... I'll be in the store Friday :D

I have owned iPhones since 2007. I haven't had any kind of insurance on a single one of them. I've had to buy an out of warranty replacement for water damage once. At the time it was $200 to replace my 3GS. If I had bought it and not used it for all my phones, I would have spent $500. And had I needed to use it, it would have cost me another $80. So with Apple care, you are pre-paying the first $100. If something happens, you are out another $80. I keep the $100 in my pocket, and if something happens I'm out $280-? depending on what they set the cost at for the 6+. Given my history, I'll continue to take my chances.

If I happened to drop my 6 Plus and need a new device, how exactly getting an AppleCare+ replacement work?
You can either call AppleCare, and they'll send you a replacement iPhone (and then you ship the old one back in the box the replacement one came in), or your make a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple Store, and they'll do the swap for you.

Regardless of which way you have your phone replaced, you'll be charged whatever the AppleCare+ service fee is for your device. For an iPhone 5s, it's $79. Hasn't been announced (AFAIK) for the new iPhones.

You would go to Apple, explain what happened and pay the deductible (which, unless it has changed again will be $79) and receive a replacement phone. You will get a "white box replacement" which can be either refurbished or brand new (if the factory hasn't started pumping out refurbished units, the white box replacement will be a brand new one in replacement packaging).

Sometimes spending a little money makes you sleep easier. Buy the Applecare and worry less.

If you cannot sleep easy and worry about paying a few hundred dollars for an out of warranty replacement then you have bigger issues and shouldn't be buying an iphone to begin with.
$99 for applecare and $79 deductible to get a replacement iphone its $178. Versus $279 paying for a replacement at Apple. So if you're really worried about $100 that much then most likely you have other bigger problems than that.

I wonder how much an out of warranty replacement will cost for an iphone 6 plus?
Same as it is now $269 or more since its bigger and costs more?
I ended up getting Applecare Plus for my 6 Plus anyway just to be safe. I dont want to have to pay over $300+ just to replace it if anything happens.

You still have to pay for the insurance and the deductible so it's still costing you $180. Not $300 but it's not for nuthin' and if you don't use it you're out $100. :)

Exactly.
Not sure how much they will price the replacement iphone 6 plus model but my guess is it will be more than the current $269 price. But like you said if you never have the need to use it then you wasted that $99 to buy it.

Pretty much pointless paying for this if you're on Verizon's Edge or anything similar on other networks. Best to get something that covers lost or stolen iphone.

I've bought AppleCare on a couple of Apple products, and not bought it on several others. What about extended warranty that a lot of credit cards offer? Anyone here ever make use of that and, if so, what was the process like?

iPhone 5s out of warranty replacement has been $269 for the entire year.
As the time wears on the cost of replacement goes down.

Apple only changes OOW replacement prices once per year when the new generation iPhone comes out (bumping the others down).
I'm pretty sure for the current iPhone at the time the OOW cost was $300+.

Incorrect. The 5s has never been above $269 for an out of warranty replacement.

I will always get Applecare + my carrier insurance. Applecare is great, but I still need my carrier's insurance for lost or stolen phone.
