Alcohol+unborn child =Bad!!

True, to excess. But Fetal Alcohol Syndrome would require much more then a 1/2 pint of Stout each day.

Ma Cake was advised by her doctor that a small glass of stout was good during pregnancy, due to the iron content.

It never did me any harm. Apparently.

See, hardly any. My point is made. ;) Now, make a fist.

Confirmed exposure

Amount, frequency, and timing of prenatal alcohol use can dramatically impact the other three key features of FAS. While consensus exists that alcohol is a teratogen, there is no clear consensus as to what level of exposure is toxic.[23] The CDC guidelines are silent on these elements diagnostically. The IOM and Canadian guidelines explore this further, acknowledging the importance of significant alcohol exposure from regular or heavy episodic alcohol consumption in determining, but offer no standard for diagnosis. Canadian guidelines discuss this lack of clarity and parenthetically point out that "heavy alcohol use" is defined by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism as five or more drinks per episode on five or more days during a 30 day period.[39]

"The 4-Digit Diagnostic Code" ranking system distinguishes between levels of prenatal alcohol exposure as High Risk and Some Risk. It operationalizes high risk exposure as a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) greater than 100 mg/dL delivered at least weekly in early pregnancy. This BAC level is typically reached by a 55 kg female drinking six to eight beers in one sitting.[24]

Wiki.

I drank daily, almost, during my pregnancy with my son, and he was extremely healthy. I think it did me, and him, good. I am a very nervous person and it really helps to calm my nerves. I was not as heavy of a drinker then; I don't think the amount I drink daily now would be healthy during pregnancy.

Once a week, maybe. Depends what is going on! Although once i'm 18 and have gotten my exams out of the way, in a few months it'll probably be more.

Its so odd seeing people saying that they don't drink... I know maybe one or two people who don't drink!

You know that is interesting that you point that out. Because I see you live in the UK. I am involved in an amateur radio group that has a lot of European members and meaning from different parts of the UK. I do not know a single one of them who doesn't drink.

However, here where I work there are many of my co-workers who just do not drink at all, ever. We had the CEO here and he brought cigars and scotch and we were having a late night business meeting, and the ones that don't drink wouldn't even get a shot of scotch. In some places that I think would be considered very disrespectful not to except a drink from a visitor like that.

Wait until you go to university (if you're going). I'm 20 next month, I don't know anyone that doesn't go out and get wasted once a week (minimum) except me
Did the waster thing for a few months in first year, had one night of true humiliation and didn't drink for 8 months afterwards (and realised how boring nights out are). Picked it up again over the Summer but now I always turn up late and keep a few drinks behind everyone else. It's nice to be the one that remembers everything. I drink about once a month. (3-6 vodka & coke type drinks at a time)

Yeah, i'll be expecting that! I don't ever get totally trashed though, just quite nicely drunk.

It is interesting. I suppose there are hundreds of reasons for more drinking in europe and especially Britain. I've got my own ideas, but I suppose a drinking culture as such takes a lot of reasons and a long time to develop.

Maybe by coincidence but all the people I know who don't drink are church-going christians.

Totally agree with you on that! A lot of my friends (including me) drink every weekend (almost) and those that don't drink every weekend, drink about every two weeks. Of course there are a few who don't cause of the whole underage thing, but like you said, most everyone I know drinks or has drank before. High school = best years of my life, lol!

ohhhh it gets better

Sure, it's fun until you realize you've had waaaaaay too much, then the fun ends. Spending a night over the toilet in-between passing out in random places isn't the proudest moment of my life, to say the least.

(This is why I don't drink a whole lot, even though it's incredibly easy for me to get the stuff.)

But I will admit, a good drunkening every once in a while is a hell of a time, so long as you don't overdo it.

You definitely got that right. The bad thing is, even though being sick is no fun at all, the fun I have beforehand is worth it....most of the time. I'm pretty sure I've had alcohol poisoning before and that was just horrible.

I think the whole idea of it being illegal is part of why people under 21 drink. Even though it's a stupid reason, I know I probably won't drink nearly as much when I'm over 21 ad I do now. But ya, around here, you can basically go get whatever type of liquor you want in under 10 minutes and people usually already have some anyways. It's kind of ridiculous how easy it is to get away with it.

Well, there is some credibility to the theory of "more people will try it if it's illegal" for sure. But mostly, I think it's just because us teenagers are idiots. I mean, we gotta face it, we're not the best at decision making.

Three times a week-ish? Sometimes four - my ladyfriend and I enjoy being out and about.

I love beer, the darker the better. And vodka martinis*. And especially pinot noir.

*almost a Vespyr - stoli, no olive anything, barely any vermouth, lemon twist.

I love to drink.

i will make you a good rum and coke. you can smell my rum and cokes across the room.

whats a gimlet?

Old school "Rat Pack" drink I've heard. My journalism professor used to drink them with us after newscasts, so that's where I got it...love em. What rum do you use? I sail with the Captain. I had this insane rum in Bombay, India though called Monk-something...it was really interesting.

Yeah, can't argue with ya on that one. As you could probably tell, that statement could definitely apply to me sometimes, lol. But yea, couldn't have said it better...teenagers and horrible decisions go hand-in-hand.

Other than me I just know of 2 others - my sister and my girlfriend, neither like the taste.

Well no. The ones that don't drink wouldn't want a shot of scotch so I'm not surprised they didn't get one. None of the people who offered ever got pissy because I told them I don't drink.

For the record I don't drink because I was attacked after a meal where I drank about half a bottle of wine (first time drinking). Ever since then I can't drink without getting panic attacks, not that drinking ever much appealed to me anyways. I rather like being in constant full control :)

1st year at uni was fuuuuun lol.. i used to go out maybe 4/5 nights a week spending 40 quid a night.. (no i didnt have the money.. but i went anyways :)) Then second year outta nowhere i acquired a girlfriend from someplace :p, and i havent been like that since.. funny how priorities change :) Although this last 6 months i have been drinking maybe somewhere between 4 n 12 pints a week.. normally sitting watching tv shows, occasionally down the pub watching the footy depends :) 3rd years a hard life...

Couple of times a month, although I can put away several beers while there. Tend to go where I'm almost guaranteed to run into people I know, don't ever drink and drive, and rarely drink at home.
