I upgraded from 3GS to 4S. Then when the iPhone 5S came out, I bought a used iPhone 5 for cheap in order to get off the S cycle. A year later I upgraded to the 6.

When AT&T got rid of contracts and let current users upgrade early, I got the 6S and sold my 6. I plan on skipping the 7 and getting the 10th anniversary iPhone 8 model next year.

Had blackberrys up till the iPhone 4. Then cycled every year with the family plan, just passing down the phones and upgrading to the latest. 4, 4S, 5, 5S, then got the next plan for these 6Plus, 6S Plus, 7 Plus.
My favorites were the 4S, the dual core A5 made the difference in speed, and I think the retina looked better on the 4S than the 4.
5S, touch i.d was cool, and the space grey color with 64-bit architecture.
6Plus, the first big iPhone!
6S Plus, what the 6Plus should've been, 2GB of DDRL4 RAM, made all the difference.
7Plus, the jet black color is amazing! 3GB of DDRL4 RAM! And that updated retina display is gorgeous! Change the color settings a little, to pull some extra saturation, and it looks like an OLED display with rich vibrant colors, without the overkill.

More often every year.

I owned the 3G for one year and then bought the 4.

The 4 I kept for almost two years before it was stolen. I used android phones for a while after that but I've had the 5S, then the 6 plus, 6S plus and now the 7 plus. So mostly every year.

My phone history is as follows,
1. HTC EVO
2. Samsung Stratosphere(Galaxy II)
3. iPhone 4 (Sprint)
4. iPhone 5c (T-Mobile)
5. Samsung Galaxy S6
6. iPhone SE and iPhone 7

It's been a long road for me and I've gone back and forth from android to iPhone. What I've found I've liked the most is my SE. So much so that I may sell my 7 if the price is right. I actually bought my 7 outright with money from my S6 so I guess I'm compulsive

Before the jump program I used to update every two years. In fact, I used to have Sprint before I switched T-Mobile. I was on a two year contact with them, but I really wanted to upgrade every year because I would destroy my phone's battery life after a year (I am a extremely heavy user) but I did not want to spend like $800 every year. Honestly, that was the only reason why I switched to T-Mobile as long as they have the jump program I will upgrading every year.

Elaborating on my vote of "when I'm impressed"..
I upgrade when they release updated "smaller than the 4.7" device" models...

So SE was my last update for a bit.

I'm still holding out hope that the 4.7" screen size can be made into a slightly physically smaller device by way of bezel/edge reduction in the future.

Lately, I've been a year behind. I wait until the new model comes out, then buy the previous model highest GB configuration at a steep discount. Probably won't upgrade to the iPhone 7 until late next year.

I buy phones whenever I want but I don't always buy the latest iPhone every year.

I skipped the iPhone 5 and bought a Nexus 4. I skipped the iPhone 6 and bought a Note 4 and a Note Edge. I skipped the iPhone 7 because I bought two S7 Edge phones in February and a 6S and 6S+ a year ago in December.

Usually every year. Used to be that I'd get release day. Now I wait a few months. I've had two first day lemons. By December/January usually all issues are ironed out.

Got an iPhone 7 recently but was a hardcore Android addict. First iPhone was the 3G. Now after getting back and liking what I see I think I'll be upgrading my iPhone every year as they come.

Every 2 years. I have grown out of wanting the latest and greatest and don't see the point losing money just to upgrade every year.

My contract is up in 2018 and i'll probably get the older device once again and save some cash. The price jump on the iPhone 7 was disproportionate and has put me off buying the latest phone anyway.

Twice a year but I'm putting an end to that as the new shiny is often simply an ephemeral buzz.

I currently have an iPhone 7 128GB and a Huawei P9 Lite (16GB + 128GB microSD). I'm keeping both these for at least 2 years. Overall I can't understand why I've made so many silly phone purchases, when what I already had was good enough. I bought an SE, kept it for a couple of months then bought the iPhone 7, too much disposable income; I'm the same with watches.

Also, with androids, I get fed up with setting them up.

Androids are a hassle to set up?

I'm Rafael and I'm addicted to phones. LOL

I upgrade every 4-6 months. Thank God Apple releases only one every year.

I do that. I've got a box full of random China/Korean devices plus like 3 iPhones, my Note 3, I was even going to get the Note 7. Everyone has their addiction right?

It takes time. First I have to uninstall any bloatware, secondly I have to download Nova Prime Launcher and tweak that to my liking.

Then I have to install all of my apps, re-arrange how I like them in folders etc. then I have to set up my widgets. It takes hours.

Thankfully, I'm stopping buying so many phones.

Yikes. The I Phone almost sets itself up
