Sorry to bump this but has anyone had problems with MMS after they did this? My plan online says I have everything i wanted.. Unlimited 3G data, unlimited messages (the one i signed up for originally when i came to att 2 weeks ago, not the one i signed up for when activating the 2G during this process). So everything worked except for MMS. I want to avoid calling att lol

hmmm, nope mine works fine, or at least I was able to mms myself o_O

My MMS won't work either! And i orginally signed up for at&T a week ago with the iphone 4. what can we do?

I just got the text. Looked on my AT&T app and it shows there are 2 $30 unlimited plans. The one I'm on is the one that says something about customers who didn't have the right data plan. The other is the normal 3G plan. Should I switch or does it notmatter?

Uploaded screenshot of the two plans, the one I have currently is the one I suspect is what alot of us have at the moment. Part of me thinks I should switch it to the other one.

Mine shows the same thing. I'm not sure which to choose

Unless you use it intensively right now there is no point in doing this for future proofness as once LTE rolls around everyones rates will change.

Looks like i'll be making an appearance at an AT&T store later.. rather take my chances in person rather then on the phone. Maybe the people in the store can be finagled a little better ;-)

I am attaching 2 pics of what my att wireless app shows and my girls app shows with features.. Mine is on the right... Looks like AT&T thinks i still have the iphone 2G

Agreed. It's a lot of trouble for something with limited benefit. They'll probably force you to move over to a new rate plan at some point in the future. Currently, I'm stream a lot of music and baseball games, and I'm no where close to busting the 2gb limit.

And if I read the last few replies right, it looks like the loophole might be closed anyways?

So I don't get it. Are you guys doing this AFTER already activating your iPhone 4?

Example: I have had my iPhone 4 since launch day. Is it too late to do this?

But it isn't really much trouble at all if you have the equipment already. Took me maybe 15 mins and didn't have any problems. With netflix and hulu streaming tons of video some can hit that 2gb pretty quick if used heavily. I would rather just have a bit more breathing room.

Wait if you need an iphone 2g sim card then wouldn't you have already had an iphone and therefore be grandfathered in already anyway?

I want to do this but I only have the iphone4 and have never had an iphone before

Or can I use any sim card

Here is a complete rundown of what you need minimum:

iPhone 4
iPhone 2G (1st generation)
iTunes with internet connection
Micro Sim card

In order, do the following things:

Put your micro sim into the iPhone 2G (either buy an adapter, use tape, or make your own adapter as explained by a number of websites on Google, I used this one, and didn't even follow it exactly, just enough to get the micro sim to sit still inside the tray)

Plug the 2G into iTunes.

Restore it by either selecting Restore when plugging it in, or if it isn't showing, turn the iPhone off then hold the Wake and Home buttons down until you see a USB plug and iTunes. Then Restore.

Then follow directions on screen to activate.
NOTE: If you've already activated an iP4 with the micro sim, you'll most likely get the "activation requires more time" message. If that happens, you WILL have to call AT&T to have them activate it over the phone. Do not bother waiting.

After it is activated (either by computer within seconds or over the phone), take out your micro sim.

Put it in the iP4.

Activate if you haven't already, otherwise, just start using the iP4.

What will happen afterwards varies from person to person apparently. Most people seem to get a text message/email from AT&T within an hour requesting you change data plans to an eligible one. However, online or from your phone it won't let you. You'll then receive a second text/email saying AT&T chose a plan for you. Again, when looking online, it'll still say the original 2G unlimited data plan that you chose when activating the 2G. Posters have said that that's normal and that after your billing cycle that will change to the 3G unlimited data.

NOW FOR MY QUESTION:
Can anyone confirm whether or not they could reapply their FAN discount after doing this? My situation is as follows:

I work at a company with a 23% discount, however, my line isn't listed as the main one (I'm on a family plan), even though my name is the primary name (it's a long story). So my line wasn't the primary line, and I've read that if it was, the FAN discount would be removed. However, when I access my account online, it still shows my company name and FAN number in the top right. Any ideas?

This worked for me. I inserted my iPhone 4 sim into the older iPhone by taping it in. Connected to iTunes and gave me the option for the iPhone 2g unlimited plan with text. Activation worked, dunno if updating the firmware right before helped activate without that error, but mine went through smooth without having to call. Put the sim back into my iPhone 4 and maybe 20 mins later received this text: AT&T Free Msg: Your iPhone requires an eligible data plan. We have added an appropriate plan and messaging pkg. Call 611 or go to att.com/iPhoneplans for info. Checked my account online couple hours later and have the unlimited 3G.

I didn't enter the FAN discount I have with my university before I tried this out, but shortly after I registered for my FAN discount and less than 24 hours later I received confirmation and had my FAN account number displayed on top of my bill

Would all of this work if I swapped a new/unregistered MICROSIM into a non-smartphone (Like a Moto Krzr) that is currently on the $15 unlimited data plan, then called AT&T to replace the old Krzr sim with the new microsim (I have an adapter for it) then put it in the new iPhone? Would the iPhone now get tagged with the $30 unlimited plan since the Krzr was on the $15 unlimited? (I know the $15 plan wouldn't last).

Should I be worried if it hasn't changed my data to the 3G unlimited from the 2g unlimited plan? Has anyone tried reactivating the iPhone 4 after downgrading to the iPhone 2g?

Did you use new sim cards when you downgraded and upgraded?

You can't necessarily REactivate one. You just start using it. And yes it's normal or it to not switch over to the 3G unlimited, at least according to some posters on here.

Still working

Hey,

Just done this, and I can confirm it is still working.....

I done this on my fathers first iphone 4 , new contract with 2gig data plan.

Ok, got a 2G, restored it, activated it with a new Sim, data plan changed over to the $20 data + 200 text, put it in a 3GS, data still working, trimmed it to fit a iPhone 4, still working... checked the data by *data# and it says unlimited. Checked online it still shows the $20 data.

My question is, to be safe, would it hurt to call ATT to tell them to switch the data over or will they see it was originally on the 2gb cap before all this and put me back on that? Should I just wait it out until my next billing cycle then?

And thanks to you guys for figuring this out, if it works. I'm in the DFW area so if anyone needs to borrow a iphone 2G, lemme know ;)

I would just wait. I have always had AT&Ts system always detect that I was using the sim in a 3G iPhone and it always switched me automatically.

Ok thanks. And would it matter if I trimmed my Original sim I used to activate my 2g and put it into my iPhone 4? or do I actually need a new micro sim and call them to activate it? I mean everything is working now, my thing shows unlimited data, just trying to cover my bases.

Personally I would not cut my sim to make it fit in my iPhone 4. I would either buy a sim on eBay or ask the AT&T store for one.

We've been buying sims on ebay so we always have some. It's easier to just buy some because sometimes the AT&T people refuse to give out any.

Ok, well I cut mine and its in there working. Should I leave it for the time being and just order some on ebay? Then activate the new sim/iPhone 4? Or maybe get the sim and wait until the billing cycle ends and see what happens, maybe still grabbing some sim cards for the future just incase?

I have a stupid question. If I buy a SIM off of eBay and call AT&T to activate it, do I need to explain why I have a random, unactivated SIM? If I just say I bought one on eBay because I lost mine, is that a bad idea?
