Just to say thanks to Coleman for this perfect guide. I had already forwarded ports and installed EasyVPN but didn't know what to do about IP addresses - this guide was perfect. I now have a VPN server set up on my Mac Mini at home, and I'm now going to try this guide to get the Bonjour service forwarded over the VPN tunnel.

[UPDATE: I can't get the bonjour/network beacon bit to work over VPN. Any ideas welcome!]

P.S. One additional tip, you can use a dynamic DNS service like Dyndns to set up an alias instead of the public IP address, as your public IP can change. I think dyndns now charge for this but there may be free alternatives.

help when using ddwrt

Coleman can you help me please?!

I have a VPN set up on a ddwrt enabled router and my ipad is able to login to the VPN fine and when I visit a whatismyip.com on my ipad when logged into VPN is shows up as the public IP address of my home network but when I try the optimum app it can still detect that I am not on my actual home network. do I need to do any port forwarding/mapping? i saw in your guide you had to forward 1723,47 but i wasnt sure if you were doing that because you were using your mac's EasyVPN software. please advise if you know how to fix this using a ddwrt router
thanks!

also is there somewhere in the ddwrt interface where I should be filling in DNS server (where you put 10.0.1.1) and search domains (optimum.net)

I actually kept at it and was able to figure out where I was going wrong, thanks for the guide man

Care to fill us in on what you did wrong? That way it may help future visitors to this thread, or other folks who are similarly stuck.

It would be easier just to post your questions here.

If your iPad can connect to your home VPN and you can browse the internet on the iPad then the VPN portion is setup correctly. Is your iPad jailbroken? You have to use a jailbroken iPad in order to watch TV outside your home. You have to install 2 apps from Cydia that blocks the iPad from seeing it is connected to a VPN and seeing that the iPad is jailbroken.

Install the App DisableOptiumumVPN from cydia which blocks the iPad from seeing the VPN.
Install the App xCon which blocks it from seeing the iPad is jailbroken.

----------

By the way. Cablevision released an application for watching TV on a laptop. I setup VPN on my MacBook Air and it works over VPN but it is HORRIBLY slowm drops frames and the video quality is garbage.

The video quality on the iPad and iPhone app are much better than the laptop app. The laptop app looks VHS quality. lol

Need help setting up

I'm trying to set this up on a jail broken Ipad and Iphone. I tried to follow all the steps but its still not working. I also downloaded App xCon. I can view it in my house when connected to my own signal with no problem but when I connect it to another open wifi signal it tells me I have to be home. I think I may be setting up something wrong in my wireless router. Have anyone set theirs up with the ASUS Black Diamond Dual-Band Wireless-N 600 Router RT-N56U. The screen shot instructions shows a different router screen shot but my Asus RT-N56U looks a lot different. Thanks for any help at all

You have to install two tweaks on the iPhone/iPad.

xCon - Which stops the Optimum app seeing it's running on a jailbroken iPhone/iPad.
DisableOptimumVPNDetection - Which stops the Optimum app from seeing it's running over VPN.

I attached the tweak to my post. If you have iFile on your iPhone/iPad. Upload the tweak to your device, then click on the tweak in iFile and choose install.

I tried to look for the DisableOptimumVPNDetection in cydia but it does not show up... also with DisableOptimumVPNDetection do I still need to do the step up with my router or does this tweek skips over doing that stuff

You have the setup the VPN as shown in the instructions. If you can connect to your VPN and browse the internet from your device your router is setup properly.

The two tweaks are to patch the Optimum app from the two checks it does when it launches. It checks to see if your iPad is jailbroken and it checks to see if VPN is turned on. If it see's either, it won't run.

DisableOptimumVPNDetection is not in Cydia. I attached it here to my post above. You need to download the tweak. Upload it to your device. Then install it.

ok, so I have a couple of questions. I download the ifile, then click on the link you posted then I get a pop up of Zip viewer, unarchiver and pdf reader. So I click on zip viewer and then two files show up. they both have a check mark so I click on them both and hit done but nothing says downloading.. trying to see what I missing something.

next thing... from the screen shot instructions on page one, I'm having problems with step 6 only. The screen shots looks like they are taken using apple router but I'm no longer using a apple router, I have ASUS Black Diamond Dual-Band Wireless-N 600 Router RT-N56U and Im not sure where to put the information step 6 says in the ASUS Router. I saw a few different forms but they say different things. so maybe you can point me in the right place..

Open iFile. Click the wifi button at the bottom.
It will start an iFile web server so you can upload files to your device.
On your computer open a web browser and put in the IP address and port you see in iFile.
Click choose file and select the downloaded .deb file.
Click User, then documents. And upload the .deb file there.
Click done on your device to stop the web server.
In iFile navigate to the uploaded file. Click User then documents.
Click on the uploaded deb file and install.
You're done.

If you have this setup on your router I don't think you have to do step 6. You can test if it is working by putting your device on a different wifi network and try connecting the VPN. Once the VPN connects, try using Safari. If it is setup properly you should be able to browse the web.

I don't get your question.

I've set it up on my iPad which works perfectly (thanks a bunch), but you had previously stated that you had set it up on a snow leopard laptop. How did you go about that if using a vpn connection optimum PC app sees that you are not on home network. Like is there something similar method to the jailbreak .deb to block that or did I just read wrong.
