My router is a WNDR3400 (the one cablevision gives you for free lol)
My ip never changed before today. I got tired of resetting every time so I started reading up on static ip vs Dhcp so I thought setting up a static ip would fix it. (I don't know anything about static/dhcp) I went into my router manager under Internet ip address and changed the settings from "get dynamically from ISP" to "use static ip address"
I reset my router and restarted my computer after then when I used my phone safari wouldn't work on wifi so I changed settings back on the router. When I changed everything back I tested connecting to VPN and it didn't work so I went on "whatsmyip" to find out my ip had changed. VPN working again but problem not solved :(
Cablevision uses DHCP so DHCP is the correct setting. When you reset your router every day is the public IP address changing? If it is changing every few days you could setup a DNS to point to your public IP address. In VPN you would connect to the DNS name and it would resolve to whatever current public IP address you're getting from cablevision.

Yes, public ip does change. Ok, thanks. By any chance would you know how to do that on a pc/windows7?

Your IP address should not change so often. Have you considered having cablevision swap out your hardware? The cable modem and router? Maybe there is a problem. We all have cablevsion. My IP address changes about once a year. Usually if the service goes out for extended period of time.

Ok I think I did it. I used the same public ip that I'm using now under where it said "use the following DNS server addresses" I only used the "prefered Dns server" and left "alternate DNS server" blank. Does this sound right?
i won't really know if this works always until I go out try it and find out I guess??

----------

No I never considered as I didn't know that it was malfunctioning lol. I noticed my public ip changes after the need to restart my router and computer to get VPN working again. It usually changes by one number the last digit, it randomly changes from 1-4. If I manually look up my public ip in command and then change my router settings port forwarding server ip addresses to that same ip # it works but if I just restart it I guess it cycles to the right last digit.

Something doesn't sound right there. Explain what you're doing again?

whenever i cant connect to vpn (usually happens every couple of days) i would restart my router and computer (I leave my comp. on all day).

everything usually works again after that, if it doesn't i go to command prompt and look at my ipv4 address (my public ip right?) i then make sure that number is the same to what i entered in my router settings under "port forwarding" (server ip address next to the ports i opened, 1723 and 47.
when vpn doesn't work its because my ipv4 address changed and i have to enter the different number in my router settings

No, that isn't your public address. Your public IP address is what you see on whatismyip.com. Is your internal IP address changing? The internal IP address used for your VPN server? The port forwarding setup forwards the VPN request to the IP address of your VPN server.

Ohh. i guess its my internal ip address that keeps changing, my IPv4 address....
every time i restart my computer it changes then i must update my router settings with the new IPv4 address to get vpn to work again.
what i also dont get is why it changes or what makes it change, as i said i normally keep my computer on....
i guess it randomly changes every day or so?

sometimes after i restart my router and comp. the original IPv4 address i entered in my router settings comes up and it works fine, otherwise i would have to reset my router addresses as i mentioned above.

You can fix this one of two ways.

1) Set your router to assign the internal DHCP addresses by computer Mac address. It basically assigns a permanent DHCP address for the computer acting as the VPN server. You restart, turn it off and on. It will grab the same DHCP address.

2) Setup the computer running the VPN server with a manual static IP address. If your router is giving out addresses 10.0.1.101 - 10.0.1.200 as DHCP, set the static IP address high in the range that DCHP will never assign and conflict with. Example: 10.0.1.199.

Thanks Coleman. Sorry I didn't get back to you, I spent most of the night trying both methods and I can't get either to work. I'll try to google "how to" for windows 7 as I know u use a Mac. Hopefully I could fix it today....

You should be able to assign DHCP by Mac address in your router settings. Enter the Mac address of your computer in the router setting and assign a DHCP address to it. On some routers it's called DHCP reservation.

To be honest I just used what u told me and tried a bunch of things till it worked. Trial and error (many errors)
Thanks again!!

Buffering problem

Hey guys, I setup a vpn server at a friends house using tomatousb w/openvpn. I got the connection and the optimum laptop app working through the vpn. The only issue is it constantly buffers the video stream. I think i'm maxing out the bandwidth from the vpn server, since the max upload is 2mbps. I've tried a few tweaks - changing ciphers and mtu size - doesn't seem to help. Any other thoughts? Is there a way to adjust the video quality in the app?

From my testing the laptop app buffers a lot. The iPhone and iPad app doesn't. Try testing with an iPhone or iPad to see if it still buffers.

quick question --

for this to work do i have to have a computer on to act as a server or can the modem itself act as a server to connect via vpn?

It depends what kind of router you have and if the router has built in VPN server support. Mine doesn't, so I have an old computer always on acting as the VPN server.

got it. yeah i think i am sol :(

it is the standard Arris TM802G Router... just did a quick search and it doesn't look like it has vpn capabilities :/

i was trying to set this up at my friend's house...

Do you have a 2nd computer at home to install VPN software on?

they have optimum and i have fios which doesn't have a streaming app...

i doubt they have an extra one but i'm going to find out.

she has an ipad too and would benefit from it so we will see.

if all else fails i guess i'll have to go with slingplayer :/

will a dd-wrt router act as a vpn server? or do i need to have to have a computer running vpn software at all times?

thanks!

okay i set up the easyVPN server as per the instructions on the first page..i am able to connect to the VPN from my ipad, however, the optimum app detects that i am not in my home..whats going on?? im using app version 3.0.1
