How to tell if you have MLC or TLC flash iPhone 6/6 Plus

That part sucks. At least those of us with 64s have a chance at getting MLC on an exchange.

Even so, there's still lots of people who know they have TLC and don't seem to be having issues. It does make me wonder if it depends on who made the chip--we know from those who've jailbroken & run a more detailed report in Terminal that TLC chips from at least 3 manufacturers are being used, so it's theoretically possible that one is worse than the others.

Interesting. Well, I'm inclined to hang onto mine for now. It isn't a huge issue and it's the only thing "wrong" with the phone so far. Since it's a manufacturer issue (assuming the TLC chip is responsible for this behavior) I think I'll also wait a little longer and see if anything develops before considering an exchange.

Checked mine with the app linked on the first page and I have TLC flash in my 128gig 6 Plus. I haven't had any crashes or panics yet, but I do have a frequent and recurring problem with background audio stuttering and crackling, particularly when Safari is in the foreground. I had assumed this to be a software issue but now I'm inclined to think it's the flash...

I think that might be RAM actually if it happens more when Safari is in the foreground

Mine definitely reloads tabs and apps more often/earlier than my iPhone 5 did. Apple have really dropped the ball with RAM.

I also experienced this on my 6+.

Although iPhone 5 and later models have 1GB of RAM, I wonder if it's because of the larger screen on the 6+ (more pixels) that cause RAM to be used up more quickly (assuming the GPU shares memory with system memory).

Arguably, the 4.7" i6 should have got more RAM but the 5.5" most certainly needs it. Especially for the price charged.
I'll probably get my head bitten off for this by the diehards, but my 6+ performs worse than my iPhone 5. Sure it has a nice screen and the web is a bit faster, but the UI lags, scrolling through long notes lags, the keyboard is less responsive, apps & webpages reload more often, and apps crash more often. To say that the iPhone 5 is over two years old, is two generations of tech behind my 6+, and my 6+ is the most expensive iPhone ever, it's all rather shocking tbh.

I can agree that it does lag, because of the downsampling involved (the UI is rendered at 2208x1242, then down sampled to 1920x1080).

For me, I experience lag when sliding up Control Centre from the lock screen and from within a folder.

Reloading of tabs in Safari is also not uncommon.

I've got both the 6 and 6+, and feel that the 6 operates smoother (my 6 is for work purposes only).

I still keep my old 5 as a spare phone.

I'd purchased two previous iPhone 6. Both were horribly defective. This third one is absolutely perfect. Wish I would of found this thread to test the other two. My third one is MLC...

What did the defective ones do ? Or not do

One heated up constantly under light use and would restart. Eventually it started showing artifice on the screen. The second one was a restart then blue screen of death mere minutes from being turned on. Could not get it come back on after blue screen.

You really make me not want to purchase it.

I would definitely pin that on TLC

there's two bits per cell lines, I was reading the wrong one.

turns out my 6+ has toshiba tlc, and my rMini (16) has toshiba mlc. Really disappointing after going through several 6 swaps for other reasons and eventually trading up and getting a 6+ unlocked out of pocket instead.

I hope I have no problems, because the screen itself is great and I'm unwilling to play the genius bar swap game to likely get one with TLC, inferior manufacture, and other issues on top of it

No boot loops or anything so far knock on wood

My 64GB 6+ has a Toshiba TLC. No boot loops either but I do have periodic freezing and regular lag. Like you I'm unwilling to get into the refurb swap game and suffer yellow screens, dust behind the camera cover, loose buttons etc.

I have confirmed that I have MLC. Both with read & write speeds, as well with the IOSKitBrowser. Guess I got lucky considering I got my 6/64GB on launch day.

Not sure if it has been asked as I have not read the complete thread, but most. I wonder how this will affect resale value down the road, especially with people who are aware that this is a problem or could become a potential problem down the road should you have a phone that contains the TLC.

Do you think this is attributable to TLC or more software issue?

I want to stop worrying about this crap, its a never ending game.

Nice! I would assume not much if at all unless Apple officially acknowledges it as an issue. Just like screen lottery.

Otherwise could just be certain runs of certain TLC flash storages, not it as a whole across the board.

I'd think it'd be obvious now if so no?

Tried another 6+ just to see what kind of storage it was packing for comparison. Never got that far, the yellow screen, crunchy touch ID, and non-smooth glass edge made me return it immediately.

Happy with what I got. Seems like 6+ QC is a gamble just like 6, no surprise, but I didn't think it would be as bad. I'm assuming so at this point.

Apple: get it together! the piss yellow screen could be ironed out with JB tweak but the text was crunchy and that can't really be ironed out

6+ 128gb tlc

Hi all,

My 6+ came from China (Nov 4th) I bought the 99c app and it reads at a little above 200MB so I have a TLC! I haven't had any reboot/crash scenario, but the phone freezes on occasions especially when answering phone calls or texting.
Meaning a call comes thru and it rings and the screen is frozen and the call goes to VM. Texting same thing. I have called apple care and gone to the store twice and they made me do a reset twice, aside from telling me I should do a 10 seconds power cycle each morning and closing apps. I have about 40 apps.

1.Can this be related to TLC?
2.Can I change my phone? (I bought the apple care).
3. What guarantees me I won't get another TLC if I exchange?

Any other info is appreciated.

All 128 GB models are TLC. Exchanging phones won't change that until/unless Apple starts making them with MLC. Right now, there's no sign of that happening. But keep in mind that at this point, many people have phones that are running fine with it. Having TLC doesn't guarantee you'll have problems, just as having MLC doesn't mean you'll never have a hardware issue.

Could your issue be related to having defective TLC NAND? Possibly, though similar issues have happened to me at times with the iPhone 4 & 5 too, so it could be firmware or a combination of things.

Personally, I would tell Apple that having to reboot every morning isn't an acceptable "solution" even if it works, since rebooting causes you to have to enter all your passwords again for things like app store/iTunes purchases or using 1Password instead of just using TouchID. That said, if you haven't already done so, they'll probably tell you that the next step is to restore the phone as new, not from backup. I think the reason my own exchange was relatively painless was because I'd already done that three times before I ever brought it in.

First and foremost thank you for your quick reply!
On my second visit to Apple store they told me to reset the phone and do it as "new!" I did that and so far I haven't had any problems, but it's been only 2 days. I'm not doing to reboot my phone on a daily basis and since I have already called Apple Care more than 4-5 times and had two visit to the store, I think I will have them change my phone!
I've also read in this thread that people have changed their TLC 128GB for a MLC 128GB, but then again I might be wrong!

Thanks again,
Ardy

UPDATE! 12/20/2014:mad:
Phone froze again after everything I did and explained! again this time the text messaging app froze solid. Called Apple Care and told them I want a replacement phone, tomorrow evening I have an appointment at the Apple Store in Glendale, CA to replace the phone.
The 64K question is are they going to replace my iphone (6+ 128GB) with a MLC Nand or is it going to be a TLC?

Assuming no crashes, would TLC be better since it has better read/write speeds?

From what I hear not necessarily! Many claim there is really no difference as far as regular people are concern unless you transfer files! Then again many claim that the life span of TLC is shorter. How much shorter (since most of us replace our phones when the 2 years contract period with our carrier is up) remains to be seen/reported. Then some say Apple has stopped using TLC on their phones altogether and then some say all 6+ 128GB iPhones are and will be TLC. Until we hear a definite official announcement from Apple anything goes in these forums.
Hope that answered your question and then some!
Cheers.
