Sorry. $60 for Early Access. It started as a Kickstarter fund raiser. The $60 included 1 year of DVR Service which includes Guide Data. Again, sorry if I have misled. I am not part of SiliconDust. Just trying to pass on my what I understand to be true.

Is it only stereo like the Tablo or will it support 5.1 or 7.1 audio codecs?

I am not sure since I don't have a full audio system. But things have changed since I posted this. The HDHomeRun DVR Solution is still in Beta and the integration of the Apple TV Channels App has changed direction due to the slow progress. A new Channels DVR Solution is in development. For Apple TV Users I would recommend this new direction

FYI....

Then get off you butt and set up at least a 5.1 System you slacker! ;)

So if I buy an HDHomeRun and the Channels App..... is there a way to watch via the HDHomeRun on the TV that has the older model AppleTV? Or will that need to be replaced with a new AppleTV? That particular TV is in an area that doesn't need all the other apps... just access to my computer for the videos that are on there and live TV on there would be nice.

P.S. Is channels still on sale?

No. Only on the Apple TV 4. No longer on sale. If you are on Time Warner Cable and want to use the HDHomeRun Prime with Cable Card most channels will not come in because of DRM.

We actually just cut the cord and are going antenna and streaming. So we would be using it strictly for our OTA channels and to avoid running cable to each TV in the house from the antenna.

Well that just sux about the app not being on sale. *pout*

Perfect. $25 vs $20. Also, pay once for all Apple TV's. Really good investment. Also, they are working on a DVR add-on which I expect to be very nice.

I saw that.... so it's an add-on and not a whole new device?

hey.... $5 is $5! :)

The DVR will run in a separate box. I will be running mine in a small NAS box. It will just be in a place connected to my router like the HDHomeRun devices. Channels will connect to it like it does the HDHomeRun. After buying the NAS you would also have to subscribe to the Guide Data somehow yet to be determined.

what a terrific little app!

the HDHomeRun and this app wasn't even on the radar for us.... but thanx to this thread you all saved us a LOT of time in disassembling 2 of our rooms TV set ups and lots of wall fishing!! we love that there were no cables to run (except for the room where the HDHomeRun and router are located and to the garage (easy run for the cable on that one and no need to spend an additional $150 to have an AT4 out there!)

I was a little leery about spending $25 on an app last night but it worked like a charm! We got the app d/l on all four Apple TVs and I love that it's one remote! No searching for the other remote to change input.... easy peasy!

We don't get channel names or any channel guide (just the channel number... i.e. 15.1, 15.2, etc). I guess that's cuz we live in the boonies. I wish we could go into channels and put the names of the stations manually like I can on the TV. It sure would be nice to have a guide like I used to with Direct.... but then... I don't plan on watching too many OTA channels. We use OTA mainly for news and the apps for other shows. So I'll just make a little cheat sheet with our channel numbers and what stations they are. And for now I'm just using TV guide app on my ipad/iphone for what's on when.

So thank you for this great thread (well... "I" thank you.... my purse doesn't.... BUT it did allow me to talk hubby into buying 3 more Apple TVs since it meant less work for him! HAHAHA!)

That should not be the case.. email us at support@getchannels.com with your location and hdhomerun model and we'll take a look at why you're not seeing channel names and images.

just sent off an email!

what app do people use to watch tv from the hdhomerun on their iOS devices.

I have the same question..... I swear I saw a thread where someone mentioned free or low cost iphone apps.... I don't want to pay $12 for the instaview pro app cuz I won't really watch tv on my iphone or ipad.. .it's more of a novelty that I CAN (don't roll your eyes at me!) if I choose....

The problem with hulu is you only get stereo. No surround. And even their higher priced commercial free tier still has some commercials in some content. And they only show a few recent episodes of currently airing tv. I tend to let an entire season of a show pile up on the DVR until I have time to watch it.

there's a handful of TV shows that have a commercial at the start and end.
From what i've seen, they have full seasons of current TV shows.

Anyway, live TV streaming service is not the same as their current library service.

Yes, a handful of shows. But either way they are in the commercial free plan.

Fox and ABC seem to have their current full seasons. But others only have the last 5 episodes. And still so many shows are missing from the service that it's just useless. There are some shows for each network but not all their shows.

Looks like Sling TV has finally acknowledged that they're trying to get on the new Apple TV: https://twitter.com/slinganswers/status/736639219456745472
The tweet says, " At this time we do not have any word on when we are going to be added to Apple TV. We are trying to get on that platform. SW." I follow Sling and whenever I've seen someone ask about the Apple TV before this, I've only seen them say something like "thanks for the request!" but never acknowledge that they're actively working on it. I've used Sling on and off for a while and generally like it, but have been held back mainly by their lack of an Apple TV app and their lack of local channels. This, along with that rumored antenna box they're apparently going to release, could make a good solution for me. I don't mind paying for something that puts local channels in the same app as other channels, in an interface that's consistent across all my devices. I'm interested to see how this all plays out.

The more that is available on Apple TV the better. I talk to them on the phone a long time ago and they said they would love to be on the Apple TV. And that was before Apple TV 4. But, I don't feel Sling TV is a good value. Only 1 stream at a time is the worst. But no local tv is a non-starter for me. I find that buying a lower tier from my Cable Provider with NO STB is a pretty good value. I use the Apple TV with the Channels App on my 8 TV's. And I also have HBO Now, Showtime, Netflix, Hulu and more for everything else.

Yeah, I definitely agree that the lack of local channels hurts its lineup. I'm not huge into the local stations, as I've moved around a lot over the years and haven't really gotten attached to them, but I do think they're needed for breaking news events and the like. I'm hoping that local channel antenna rumor about Sling turns out to be true, as that would make it much more appealing to me. As for me though, something that offers the same UI for many channels and across different devices (as opposed to separate apps per channel) is pretty valuable to me, as I need my TV setup to be easy enough for kids/parents/guests to use. :)
