You're wrong about AMZN... iTunes has their video downloads eclisped, and still growing. More and more content features are being aquired for exclusive availability on iTunes only, and not the other way around anywhere except with NFLX.

well

I hate to say it but I loved webOS from the moment I saw it and its gotten no attention. I actually hope this sells and creates a very successful competing platform that will kick the iPad foreword aswell. I just cant help but LOVE webOS. Sorry :(

Im also very excited about them announcing that it will be in future computers! I hope that it becomes a pc os that is linux/windows/macOS worthy. I dont mind using linux or sometimes even windows. But if there is a good webOS with games and all I will be all over that.

Cut copy paste - crickets
Battery life - crickets
Folders (or other user content organization system) - crickets

And webos is coming to HP desktop/laptop computers! Wow! You know, just like OS X 10.7

Ummm, you haven't used Web OS even a tiny bit have you? I've been an Apple fanboy for the last 10 years, and still only use Macs at home, but WebOS convinced me to switch from my old iPhone last year. If I had to make the decision again I'd do the exact same thing. Definitely no regrets.

It handles cut & paste wonderfully. You can even use ^c and ^v if you like.

Folders aren't needed as if you have more than 16 apps on a page you can scroll down.

Battery life, well, we will wait and see on that one.

You didn't mention multitasking or notifications, so I will fill you in on that. They are amazingly well done. Best in industry in fact. I usually have a dozen apps open at a given time on my phone and rely on notifications for twitter, SMS, calendar, e-mail and RSS feeds, all without them interfering with my work flow. Beautiful implementation.

"Pad" and "slate" and such have been in use for a decade in the touch business.

What I found odd about HP using "Touchpad", is that the word (or its cousin, trackpad) has been associated for a long time as a mouse surface for laptops.

But Lord Ballmer clearly said we were supposed to call this new form factor "slates."

HP is really becoming a rebellious child...

iPad's marketshare has gone down near 75%. Android went from 2% to like 23%.

I've never seen a single one of these mythical Android tablets in the wild.

Right, HP doesn't copy Apple...

I just wanted to laugh at HP's attempt at tablet form factor to webOS UI - no one can deny HP is just outright copying Apple's iPad and even their keyboard down pat.

Along with slates, there were what we called web pads. So pad seems appropriate for a WebOS device, eh?

OTOH, Apple probably chose pad was because it sounded like pod.

I've seen a few Galaxy Tabs around, including ones for two users at work who used to carry iPads. I suspect the smaller form factor was a main reason.

I'm glad they are copying Apple because I love WebOS, it's WAY better than Android. There just aren't enough people for three, let alone 4, mobile OS's. Apple fans will stick with Apple while everyone else who hates Apple will go with Android (or 'droid' as they call it lol).

Pfft, not even close. See, HP capitalized the words on the Shift key, Tab key, Control key...

Totally different. Totally original. Totally...HP.

;)

Oh for goodness' sake.

You act like you've never seen chiclet keyboards, starting from at least the early 1980s.

Correction: I've never seen how bold a company that's not a chinese kirf company blatantly duplicate to this extent.

It's pathetic. EVERYONE knows HP is duplicating. On one hand, Apple is flattered. The other hand, it's embarassing for HP. Probably an executive up top who's agenda is:

"We know Apple tests and ensures the best designed devices. Instead of having to pay our own HP R&D, let's just rip them off. We already know this will sell (apple is already selling) - we just want to take in 10% of their profits. Agree? Meeting adjourned, engineers, get right to copying!"

Even though webOS is now backed by HP - they will still fail for all the reasons obvious. You want to take a dent of google's android platform? You won't with what you have to offer so far in these new devices.

I forsee: Android, close 2nd to Apple #1. WebOS 4th with RIM 3rd. Windows phone 7 combined with Nokia will be a frankenstein nightmare which will put them 5th in terms of global sales.

I like the os and will try this device when it comes out, but I wish HP had kept the Palm name as it's a sexy name where as HP isn't. Comp is good.

And Apple ripped off Sony and anyone else who made chicklet keyboards. What's your point?

PS: The HP one looks much better than the iPad keyboard dock.

Sounds like HP is finally sick of being a no-margin commodity hardware maker for the Microsoft money machine.
Pretty much this.

Now I will have to see how to manage an iPad from a Windows based computer with Apple's computer hardware being a dead end.

It would be difficult to deny that Apple (and yes, Sony) reignited the chiclet keyboard trend.

HP is no stranger to handhelds, touch computers, and chiclet keyboards.

Back in the early 2000's HP Ipaq touchscreen PDA days, there were lots of chiclet keyboards that you could plug it into. With back pieces that doubled as covers, too. See first pic below.

Heck, that Apple iPad chiclet keyboard layout looks a lot like the HP Touchsmart keyboard below in the second pic, that predates the iPad. But you know what? HELLO !! QWERTY!! They all look similar.

I appreciate not having the function key being swapped with the Control key. It is getting hard to find a notebook like that unless it is a gaming one.

I like it - specially the fact that it support FULL web (as in Flash)

Very cool stuff!

However, I hate the size and resolution :(

So will it run Active or Silverlight ? So it's not quite the FULL web then is it ? Close (depending on how it handles ALL flash sites), but not FULL

Anybody saying that this, down to the presentation, isn't a complete knock-off of Apple and the iPad are deluding themselves.

Wow.

Good luck, HP!

It's better to copy success than failure. Look they are even releasing wifi first, then 3G later, unlike the Galaxy Tab failure and the soon to be Xoom failure.

Do we really need another mobile OS with it's own app structure and so on.

Now we got:
Blackberry
Apple
Microsoft
Google
and now HP sporting their own OS.

Tbh, I don't think there is a market for 5 different non-cross-compatible OS:s and at least one will go over the next year or two.
HP has a good opportunity to be successful and now that Microsofts biggest ally in the mobile market is going on its own they are gonna have problems (well, even more problems), but they've got funds to go on forever.

Nope, we sure don't. And like the entire cell phone market, the tablet market will only have one winner, Apple

It has a dock at the bottom of the screen! Holy innovation!

Has anyone written "competition is good" yet? My day isn't complete if I don't read that little chestnut. Such original thinking seems appropriate on a thread about this device...

The very first post said competition is good, and nothing else.

Wow - go out for an evening and come back to over 450 posts...

Well, without reading all of them...

I hope HP takes Palm and makes it popular again. I think they'd do fine in 3rd (iOS and Android above of course).

I'd like to see them do better than Windows Mobile. I think it would depend on if Nokia decides to use WinMo or go with some other...
