More Vaporware?

Just wondering if this is really a solid competitor or simply another attempt by PC manufacturers like HP to show movement and still seem relevant in this emerging market... the proof will be in the release dates, batt life and ultimately "eco-system" the other real life specs in which the iPad does excel in IMO.

Yeah I know...I was thinking the same thing. With all of Rubenstein's experience at Apple (you can tell he was paying attention to keynote style!), you'd think he'd know not to show his hand until ready to release. This is amazing stuff from Palm/HP, but now everyone has time to copy it before Palm even ships a product!

there is no way anyone will be able to copy and ship a product in 6 months. these things take 12-24 months on average to reach the market.

Another ipad killer. Apple really need to update IOS now its lacking a lot of features other tablets have and is really dated.

Releases IN SUMMER. Apple will be touting iOS5 at WWDC by then, thus generating great excitement.

I always enjoyed webOS, its was always the hardware that sucked. I think Apple should take some cues from the touchpad. Like BETTER ***** NOTIFICATION SYSTEM. For the love of god can we get some decent notifications. Steve Jobs should be ashamed at the notifications in iOS.

that's why i left the iphone for palm and then android. notifications are just so much superior on android and webos, it's just silly.

yea i wish they would have a 4" no slideout keyboard. Basically a black slab with WebOS instead of iOS or Android.

Me too. And my friends as well. Also, I really loved the Touchstone charging system. With comms as well, it sounds great.

However, I forgot to note something important:

The Pre 3 is a world phone, using a Qualcomm chipset for HSPA+ and CDMA support.

So c'mon, Apple, get with the world phone program, eh? You already have the core chip in the Verizon model :)

I love WebOS second to apples iOS. it's definitely ahead of Android, but HP just ******* on themselves by waiting till summer to release this magnificent device. The specs are great compared to iPad 1, but comparing these specs to the obvious specs that Apple will deliver in iPad 2, they are murdering themselves.

But the good thing is that HP has a much better chance at delivering this product at a much better price point than motorola can, due to the fact that they are the owners of both the software and the hardware like Apple. So I expect a 400-500 dollar 16gb model from HP. If they are going to compete against both the iPad 2 an Xoom, they will have to come in that low. The xoom is really just out of the question if they come with that rumored 800 buck price tag.

Great tablet but once again HP/Palm are going to release it too late. Summer? Honeycomb and iPad 2 would be out by then and will all likely have better specs.

*sigh*.

PS- For all of you saying they copied Apple. Lets just say Apple isn't exactly guilt free when it comes to borrowing ideas.

Hey wait a sec! I thought Apple calling it the iPad was a blunder because of the "pad" connotation. Now HP, more than a year later, refuses to learn from Apple's blunder and also calls their product a "pad"? What gives? Were all those critics just, I dunno, making stuff up so they could try to make Apple look bad?

Back to realityland, the key for the TouchPad is quite simple:

1. Have it available around the time of the iPad 2's release.
2. Price it under the iPad.
3. Have battery life almost as good as an iPad.

They failed at 1.

They won't say about 2.

They are being cagey about 3.

so how do you like WebOS? I have never used it and I can't find anything more intuitive than iOS.

Agreed! They always do this and I don't understand why. Announce something that looks amazing (Take off your Apple fanboy hat for a minute) and then tell us the wifi is coming out in 'summer' and 3G/4G "eventually"?

If you are going to show something this great you need to have it ready to go ASAP.

I really thought HP/Palm had a chance to compete with the iPad. Maybe the smartphone war is lost, but the tablet space is wide open.

Waiting until summer could be the death of the Touchpad.

Now I'm just waiting to hear the price...

And that has worked wonders for all these companies in the past....

No one said it was an effective strategy.

But there are a lot of people who didn't buy the first iPad that are teetering on the edge about buying version 2. Who knows, may sway some of them.

Smartest thing, if they had to announce it now, would have been to announce pricing too. Cheaper than iPad 2 may well have gotten them a few hold-outs.

Its meant to be really good but was on fairly rubbish hardware. Should be good on better hardware but prob not a honeycomb beater which seems to be the tablet os to buy.

Here's the problem: when are these going to ship? Spring and summer?
Spring: Post MWC, we will see a flurry of Android phones, some with dual core and 4G, in addition to Honeycomb tablet (Moto Xoom). Oh, and don't forget iPad 2.
Summer: iPhone 5.

Do you see the problem? Palm/HP has almost no chance other than today to get media exposure. Releasing the products way later after the announcement is not going to do you much good if you're trying to compete with the headline grabbers like Apple and Google.

Good attempt by HP! It is amazing how they announce this day after Dell and after iPad2 goes in production! There are some improvement ofer iPad, but at end if the day it is Apps that would be making the difference also, which is a big hole for WebOS devices!

Finally, why do people get all worked up over dual-core processor? Come on guys if your processing a huge computation on your spreadsheet or doing DNA analysis, you are targetting wrong device. The only high compute intensive work that I can see this devices need are for games and that too with rendering requirements which can be addressed by GPUs. Video is other application, but that too can be handled by GPUs.

Dual core offers significant power savings while still making the OS feel snappier....

It IS exciting.

Battery Life?
Price?

"OMG-OMG! WE JUST REINVENTED THE iPAD BUT IT ISN'T THE iPAD!"
*PC fanboys almost choke on their own happiness*
"And it's only $599 and has 2 hours battery life!"
*PC fanboys rush out to buy it anyway*

I think the competition will continue to be limited until someone can replicate apple's touch technology. I've used many devices and they're slow, glitchy, unresponsive and inaccurate compared to apple's touch screens.
I may be swayed if the touch screen is just as good, but until then, apple all the way for me. That said, this device DOES look like one of the better tablets out there. Although, by the time it's released, I'll hopefully already have an iPad 2

Couldn't resist :p

But the multitasking sure is nice!
