Perhaps the "iPhone" tab at the top of the mac rumors page should be renamed "iDevices" and this news story should be moved there. It is HARDLY Apple related.

USB 3.0?

Why? And I very much doubt it.

Also, 1.3 MP and 3.0 MP camera front and back both with flash?

Am I missing something here? What would you use a flash for on the front camera? Other than to blind yourself?

Chunky and weird.

Is the tap at the bottom to shove in-between the rolls of stomach and abdomen fat to keep it held for the user?

Uh... if you read the diagram, you'll notice it's labeled "optional dock".

If the tablet gets stolen, you can remotely take a really nice photo of the thief. It also has a strobe mode to blind him. :D

It may have some minor advantages here and there, but ultimately it will just be a "me too" attempt at creating an iPad.

If HP does the right thing and uses WebOS, this could be a very decent competitor to the iPad. I've used WebOS, and it's pretty good. It obviously gets much from iOS devices, but it has its own approach to many of the things it does.

So what's REALLY going to happen in January? First off, Stevie J, who can command his own stage and simply blow off the CES, will announce a second gen iPad on either January 18 or 25, with delivery to consumers on Friday, April 1.

It's highly unlikely Apple would kill existing iPad sales for two months with such an early announcement. The iPhone 4 was announced just over 2 weeks before availability. With the iPad on the same development cycle (we assume), I'd expect the same timetable.

Though I'm sure there will be plenty of subtle leaks to dampen enthusiasm for Android tablets in the meantime. ;)

I'm shocked that I haven't seen the expected "This is a MAC rumors site. Why are we covering this?" post yet. Usually it's on the first page of replies.

who give a d*** what HP brings out. It will be short lived anyway.
Once all them cheap as hell tablets running honeycomb saturate(to be sold in CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens for almost nothing) the market, HP's own honeycomb tablet will bite the dust.

The PalmPad will be running WebOS. I've used WebOS, and I myself am impressed with it. I prefer iOS, but WebOD isn't that bad. So I give a d*** about what HP brings out. No need to be pissed off that HP is releasing a competitor to the iPad. Competition is a good thing.

"it has hardware specs nearly identical to Apple's iPad”

By which of course, they mean:

“although spec points are of limited relevance in this market, especially in the absence of pricing info, it will (if released on schedule next Spring) have specs nearly identical to the previous year’s iPad”

That USB 3.0 will really come in handy when you need to fill up all 128GB of capacity in 5 seconds or less.

I see HP are going for specs, specs, specs, regardless of the ensuing 1.7 hour battery life that comes from all of the extra and questionably beneficial cameras, slots and lights that they are adding.

One of the best features of the iPad (and most unchallenged to date) is the extraordinary battery life.

So you can wave a checklist at reporters and say "We got this and iPad does not!"

And no, nobody else will miss it either. While HP tablet users will lug their tablets over the the TV and plug it in, iPad users will just flick their videos wirelessly while sipping a cool beverage.

Provided iPad users spent $99 for an Apple TV.

Better have a real apps - and a future for apps - but I feel this is going to be another dead platform much like the Pre.

The Pre died because nobody marketed it, and the hardware was bad. Its OS was actually very good IMO. If HP backs WebOS with decent hardware, it could be a very great product. I still like iOS more than WebOS though, but WebOS was in its infancy, so I think its future is bright.

Yawn

Yet another whack ass iPad competitor…And it would have made sense to wait for LightPeak.

Maybe but who would tie up a Pad to a TV with a cable in this day and age?

It's posts like this that give Mac users a bad name you pretentious troll. Yes, let us all buy a $100+ Apple TV and be restricted to play only itunes formatted data when we could get a $3 cable and access to play virtually any file format. Oh no, there's an icky cable, what will we do?

Side-note: To all users here, do you realize how stupid you all look when you use the  emoticon?

Nothing like a catchy subject line to grab the attention...Anyway, the PalmPad may amount to something, but not in 2011. And any company that has to rely on the CES for market penetration has already lost out.

So what's REALLY going to happen in January? First off, Stevie J, who can command his own stage and simply blow off the CES, will announce a second gen iPad on either January 18 or 25, with delivery to consumers on Friday, April 1. And then he's going to make a play for the entire ereader market by cutting the base iPad price to $379-399 and taking Amazon's Kindle DX head-on. The DX is SO dated, and the entire ereader market is easy pickin's. Stevie just won't be able to resist.

But remember, there's MORE!! Splashy is in. Steve LOVES splashy, especially when he's doing the talking, so bet on some January razzle-dazzle that goes beyond the routine market murmurings to date. Exactly what? Remember, Apple is so secretive that the NSA looks like the NYT in comparison, but maybe something like an iOS 5.0 announcement. Or real-time 3-D geo positioning with the voice of your choice...

Plan on another ball in 2011, boys and girls. Stevie didn't merely create the tablet market, he wants it ALL and is going to keep doing slam-dunks just as long as he can. 2010 was just a taste.

If an iPad was that cheap, they why buy a $399 64 GB iPod touch? Same price gets you a 16GB GIANT iPod touch. :D

well said

Do you carry a AppleTV with you everywhere you go? Every new TV has HDMI and many video projectors also have it. So with HDMI you can hook it to any "new" TV right out of the box - can't say that for the iPad.

way too many fanboys here you have to buy/use additional equipment to use airplay (apple tv) a feature that will cost you £99 not mention possible upgrade of your wifi system even then I wonder what the quality is like compared to hdmi (with high bitrate video).
