Wish I had bought some stock... :-/

It's a gamble. You could have seen Palm close its doors and you would get $0.00 too.

HP seems to me to be too much of a big commodity company selling products for pennies profit that they don't know how to lead. The HP Pre and HP Pixi will slide into obscurity. The OS might live on in some future follow-the-leader product.

If only my old RPN calculator had webOS it could add numbers more prettily. :)

Interesting, for some of their older WM smartphones(not sure about current), HP used HTC as the ODM. The Palm Treo 750 and Treo Pro WM devices were made by HTC. Then on the other side of things HP was helping market the first few gens of the iPod to PC users. And Palm has been trying to get their WebOS phones to sync to iTunes. A lot of history there that could or could not have some effect on this.

By the way -

Just out of interest, what would HP offer on a Tablet that would make it a wanted device? And I am not being snarky here. I really would like to understand what they see on the tablet that people would want it for? I can see some biz buyers wanting a laptop-thingy, with Word. But if HP is a corporate mover-and-shaker, and they are sort-of, kind-of weak in consumer products -at least recently- what market do they target?
So someone help me, imagine what the ad says that makes me want to buy the new HP-TOUCH-P-Tablet-6000z?
How does it differ from the iPad and what is the platform/brand/use leverage?

PS. Does it run Microsoft Office?

What a turnaround - of the bad variety.

The Pre was the talk of CES 2009, a mere 16 or so months ago. But there was too much of a delay between CES and the availability of the Pre. And then there was an even longer delay in releasing the SDK. It had so much promise and they fumbled it away.

Of course this is the same company that would have been first with a netbook device in the Folio but killed it just before ASUS released the EeePC and the whole netbook wave. Many bad decisions.

Good luck with HP. HP is the McDonalds of the computer world. Crap in volume.

This.

HP Invent. It's a punchline these days.

Your anger issues aside (by the way if you don't like Apple products why are you on this board? And if you do, you certainly have some self hate about it!) The closed APple system is not a big deal to anyone but - a segment of developers.

I have never heard, my mom, my sister, my brother say "This closed system just isn't good! I hate when things work." If you want to install your own graphics boards the Mac was never the computer for you. But for many people ease of use and a mobile system where security is a number one priority wins the day.

Palm was 'so open' but it didn't help them. And it wasn't just the marketing. It's that they offer a solution to no problem. It's me-to design. There is a market for that. But don't mix up the value of a working system, robust platform and strong security with the ability to install everything you want. When you buy a Honda, you most likely expect it to have the engine Honda designed and spec'd for it.

So don't buy an iPhone, simple!

I suppose I should have clarified so everyone doesn't wonder why I am on macrumors... i LOVE MACS... OSX is the best computer OS out there bar none... I have always used macs, and see no reason why I wont continue for years to come... they are great, I have always recommended them and I still do...

iPhone's and iPhoneOS is another story. I disagree with the way apple controls them and I do not plan on buying one. It is simple... all I was saying is there are a lot of people out there who would buy a webOS based tablet even though it wont have 200000 apps... And sure iphones "just work" like all apple products (most of the time)... but unlike the average non techie consumer I (as I imagine many of you also do) like to be in control of the gadgets I own, not subject to using it exactly as apple dictates I may. And with webOS its not illegal.

Sad. WebOS is a truly great thing, even if the Pre wasn't quite perfect. Alas, HTC has one less person to steal from :p.

Unfortunately, HP is probably just patent mining. It's a shame that the only mobile OS even close to approaching Apple had to be bought by a serial bungler that will never produce anything good with it.

No one bought them.

Does the market count for anything? It may be a fine little phone in a world of fine little phones. But it wasn't the second coming for gawds sake or HP wouldn't have just bailed their butt out of hock.

I didn't make a comment on the market - I was commenting purely on the phone as a device. I never said it was the second coming, or claimed it's an iPhone killer, but only that it's a good phone.
I don't see anything wrong in acknowledging decent devices from other manufacturers: Life would be pretty boring if there was only one supplier and Apple (even after seeing 4.0) could learn a trick or two from WebOS.

Engadget and Gizmodo (along with many others) didn't sing WebOS as a platform praises for no reason.

Oh no you di'nt!

Gizmodo is full of 20 year old uneducated kids (in journalism, ethics, and engineering) who would be living at home with their parents if blogs weren't able to keep the doors open selling ads. They play with toys. Praise from people like that means nothing to most of us.

I'd trust Mossberg or Pogue.

With that said, it's probably okay. But the OS is only part of the total product experience. Will HP fix that?

Methinks the players are already decided and its Apple, RIM and Android. Much like Microsoft, Apple, and Linux in that respective order.

I'm actually pretty happy with this deal...it seem that Palm will remain somewhat able to set its own goals. Clearly HP is going to want to see product that support its goal, but from what they are saying, they are going to supply Palm with cash while still allowing the great minds that worked on WebOS to keep making it better.

Hopefully HP changes Palm ads for the better though!

Does this mean my laser printer will now make phone calls?

No? Then who cares. ;)

Anything more and it's a fax. ;)

I don't see WebOS useful for ANYTHING other than a phone. It pretty much requires a constant internet connection. It's a WEB-OS. Unless you have a monthly 3G account for your tablet you'd be SOL. I couldn't imagine paying a monthly bill for my phone and tablet... A waste if you ask me.

I use and appreciate your 2do lockinfo plugin, but this is the dumbest comment I've seen in a while. Maybe you should educate yourself on webOS before you post...

Smart move by HP. Apple really blew it here. They should have bought Palm for the Patents and to incorporate some of the technology in their Operating Systems.

I'm sure HP will cross license with Microsoft since they are very close partners. This will spell more trouble for Apple and Google's Android.

I think it's safe to assume that Apple will have any potential HP/MS mish-mash of Palm's OS figured out well in advance.

Wow! I don't see that at all. This is great news for Google, bad news for Microsoft, and for Apple...it's just news.
