Revolutionary!

<sarcasm>Wow...I think this is going to be totally revolutionary and amazing...just like the merger of AOL and Time Warner! </sarcasm>

I think it's safe to assume that Apple will have any potential HP/MS mish-mash of Palm's OS figured out well in advance.

really? they didnt see multitasking or gestures coming at all.. those 2 features are what make webos so special... and yeah yeah about iphone4.0 getting multitasking, compared to webos its a joke...

They should have bought Palm for the Patents and to incorporate some of the technology in their Operating Systems.

Newton was pretty much everything Palm Pilot was, except it cost more. The only thing of value I see is Graffiti (which I loved), but $1.2B is a steep price to pay for something Apple has been without for a while. Not worth it.

Now keeping it from other competitors is an interesting thought. However, Palm couldn't do anything with their IP on their own and they were in a good position. If the market is pretty much divided up between Apple, Google, and RIM, all of which have an OS, then it doesn't matter much what happens to Palm's IP. The key players already have what they need.

I expect HP to use this for some consumer devices OTHER THAN a phone. They won't get into the phone business. I'm thinking video based like a camcorder, camera, or TV. No iPods or iPhones... they see what happened to Dell.

Really?

2009 revenue:

Apple - $42.91 billion
HP - $114.55 billion

Yes, I know, figures aren't what they seem but HP is hardly a loser, fanboy.... But if it ain't Apple, it's craple, isn't it? ;)

I just love when someone says anything negative about another company someone comes along and throws the usual fanboy name calling. Did I call you names? The next time you want to defend HP on a Mac forum and show how well they are doing revenue-wise vs. Apple, take a look in the mirror the next time you feel like calling someone a fanboy.

HP makes crappy laptops that are cheap and made to be sold at Walmart, you won't get anything decent unless you buy their premium line and even those aren't the greatest. They haven't even been able to create a Tablet that got people running to the stores to buy, Apple did though.

someone who does not want to conform to the BS closed ecosystem that apple has created. Palm has been so open and allowed so many people to "tinker" with its OS, and the tinkering they have done has led to great improvements in the 10 months its been out through multiple software updates.. not just one each year... Apple's iron fist control over iPhone OS is terrible for anyone who actually wants to control their device (legally)...

And yet the Palm Pre failed miserably. Aside from the Blackberry, I see more people with an iPhone and no one with a Palm Pre. I guess Apple's closed system doesn't bother people the way you make it seem.

HP used to be a respectable company in my eyes. I do remember the times that they were the boss of printer business. Then they bought Compaq, ans enter to laptop business. Since then, every single HP laptop that I saw, my friends bought or heard, had gave some serious trouble to their users. Problems, problems, problems... Nothing more. Still, people buy HP's.

Their acquisition of Palm can only mean something. They are going to enter the mobile equipment business. Phones, tablets, netbooks... They are definitely going to use the webos for some mobile stuff. Actually, this is a good movement, because right now, people starting to undestanding that Windows will just die. There is a movement towards mobile devices and ones like iPhone OS, Android, WebOS will be the ones that are going to rule the world. Therefore, tablets, pc's and all these stuff will have one of these OS's one day. Reasons are pretty simple, user interface thing on one hand, speed and usability on other hand. Efficiency is also another factor.

We'll see some interesting things going on in the future, fasten your seat belts and enjoy the show...

It's actually one of the reasons for Apple's success.

And I see more people with Nokias and Sony Ericsson and anything else apart from the iPhone.

no, clearly it does not bother people and I understand why.. its a great phone and a good os.. with phenomenal apps... but for me.. and a lot of other techie types... apples system is a no go...

It aint about features, hoss. It's all about how they're implemented.

Exactly.

That puts your arguments in perfect context

Ugh. You tell people not to call you a fanboy and then come out with the usual "HP produce cheap crap" line.

Compare to the WM 6.x and lower(let just keep about multi-tasking alone and leave the interface out of it as its nothing special), Apple, like most companies are just catching up.

yeah and webos implements these features way better than apple does... apples multitasking is by no means better, no official review of it has even tried to make that claim, they all admit its not as well implemented...

I believe I keep up with tech news with the best of them. Pray tell what overhyped pile of vaporware/mediocrity Dell is promising now?

Aside from displays, there ain't much they make that stands out IMHO.

I was pulling for HTC to buy Palm, but when that failed, i was kinda glad. Apple would of had some real issues it that would of happened, Palm has quite the library of patents when it comes to smart phones.

Either way, I'm pretty happy someone rescued them.

This is awesome news. Even though im a die hard iphone user for life. It's great that palm has a future now. This way the WebOS users won't have to worry about the future of the Device.

Congrats PALM :) Congrats HP :) After all if it wasn't for them i wouldn't have my beloved iphone

Smart move by HP. Apple really blew it here. They should have bought Palm for the Patents and to incorporate some of the technology in their Operating Systems.

I'm sure HP will cross license with Microsoft since they are very close partners. This will spell more trouble for Apple and Google's Android.

HP is Microsoft’s premier hardware partner. They pretty much are the first to launch every new Microsoft product initiative including Touch-based devices, Media Center, Tablet PCs, PocketPC/Windows Mobile PDAs, Windows Home Server, etc.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens to WebOS. Microsoft can’t be happy right now.

In the long run though, I have a feeling the best assets of Palm will get swallowed up in HP’s corporate bureaucracy just like VooDoo PC and just about every other HP acquisition.

I feel like if Apple had purchased palm the only thing it would have used are some gestures and some of there UI to give it a mini I face lift... I think the iPhone os could use a small UI change it's funny how just the ability to change your background on the iPad changes the experience.

Interesting take on this acquisition. With Windows Phone about to launch this could be the death of WebOS.

Too bad about VooDoo. They sure knew how to wire the inside of a PC.

You are totally wrong. Only Apple is capable of doing revolutionary and amazing things. Just ask Steve Jobs :D
