this asymmetrical keyboard arrangement makes my brain hurt.
like it wasn’t useless enough with the 15” laptops crammed with a stupid numpad...

What kind of monstrosity is this. Why is aesthetics so bad in high performance gaming laptops? Only laptops of this kind I find appealing are Razer’s.

Also many consoles allow for a tablet to be used as a second screen to activate consumables via touch in game like the function keys or to display the game map. As an avid gamer I can see this mini screen being useful for gaming

Using a tablet as a secondary screen has little to do with this atrocious approach to embed a 1080p mini screen on a laptop's body, but of course YMMV.

So MR is now posting ads for gaming laptops now? Thats a bit weird...

Based on the article, they don't seem to think a lot of people will use the trackpad and will instead use their own pointing device. Of the ones that do use it, they are assuming most will be right handed, which may be true, but sucks for those that are lefty's.
I'm a lefty. :(

Why is this a MacRumor? Is Apple buying HP?
MacRumors must be low on Apple rumors.

Serious question, who does hardcore gaming on a laptop?

Wouldn’t it be better to build your own rig at a fraction of a cost?

People who have to travel and doesn't have the luxury of staying home all the time.

I built a rig and only go to enjoy it couple months out of the year because of this and after couple of years I can't even put graphics past High. And since I only get to enjoy it couple months of the year by the time my GPU got outdated it feels like I hardly played on it. What am I gonna do upgrade it spend another arm & leg for just couple months of enjoyment (couple months not including work, social life, errands, etc, etc).

Not to mention some games like 'BF4' which I played a lot just isn't played anymore and missed out on the peak periods of the game. because I was traveling.

So yes there are people like me that 'NEED' as opposed to someone that just wants a gaming laptop for the sake of having one.

Woah..! I actually think this thing is pretty great for things like streamers, having OBS, discord etc on the second screen sounds really cool, and not really doable in a single unit machine usually.

When I'm recording or streaming I generally need 2 or more displays. Having 2 on a laptop is nice!

Umm, that touchpad is in a weird place. Would rather have a full sized keyboard.
Also, gaming on a laptop you always use an external mouse.
Also, the touch bar on the Mac is already an inconvenience. Why would I want one 4 times the size?
Same reason Logitech makes keyboards with built-in displays. I've used them and while typing on the old g15 wasn't great the display was really useful.

would have been cool if you could detach and rotate the touch pad and turn it into a keypad, like with that ridiculous Acer Predator laptop.

This has nothing to do with the touch bar. The touch bar REPLACES a bar of physical keys. The person who invented that was definitely not a pro-user. A pro-user would have added a touchbar on top of those ESC / functionkeys. That might be just a pretty good idea.

The "next level"-thing here is HP indeed keeping those ESC / function keys and add a 6" screen above the keyboard. Well Replace that 6" screen with a touchbar and I might become more interested in the touchbar. Just as long as I keep my physical Esc/functionkeys.

While we're talking keyboards: the butterfly mechanism cannot be considered real physical keys. I do like key-travel. And I do like to eat biscuits behind my computer: the keyboard should be able to survive those. All my previous computers did survive my eating habits or worse. I don't care about a laptop as thin as possible. The 2015 MBP was already better than good-enough.

Sidenote: that HP is just too ugly to look at IMO.

Better to invest is a proper gaming tower, and get an iPad mini as your youtube/messaging/media screen?
Better would be determined by use case.
Can't easily bring a tower setup to a friends house to game.

Because one thing hard-core gamers (the target customers for these machines) have yearned for is the ability to play Spotify and stream YouTube videos while fully concentrating on mowing down their opponents?

When your opponent is also streaming then ... LMAO It's a good tool to ghost.

Is HP looking for a poster child to low sales besides placing blame on supply chain? And that 1080p display. Just wow.

This is actually pretty nice, but since it's an HP product and out of step with competitors, it will likely be the only generation fo this product. Also, since it's an HP product, it might last about a year tops. Apple has **** keyboards, but HP has always had **** batteries, **** thermals, **** support, etc.

Nice concept, but with HP backing it, stay away.

Wow, I can't imagine anyone is wanting this.

What can't you imagine?

  1. Having an 8-core new Intel chip?
  2. Using Turbo Boost when you need it and not disabled by Apple on heavy load work?
  3. A MaxQ 2080 GPU?
  4. upgradable cheap hard drive and ram options?
  5. An ultrafast render machine on the go for video/3d work?

I agree, the design is not my cup of coffee but what matters is under the hood. And as a long term Apple user, I get upset not being able to work adequately on the go with their "pro" line specs.
