I actually kind of like Huawei's phones – they are so close to iPhones, in design, and made of good materials to good quality. Too bad they run 1) Android and are more or less 2) Chinese spy-ware.

Number 1 keeps me from ever purchasing a Huawei phone, so number 2 is of no concern.

I'm perfectly happy with my X, and I see no reason to upgrade this year – the X is such a perfect phone – so Huawei may well keep the #2 position, given Apple's predicted fall launches (I see a lot of people holding on to their iPhone X this year).

In any case, to everyone so inclined, Happy Huawei! They're obviously copying Apple right :D

Another reason Apple should focus more on their Mac line and its peripherals (Airport routers etc). The mobile phone market is getting more competitive now.

Probably. Then perhaps Huawei deserves the same benefit of the doubt for introducing the notch.

Nah, Huawei just copied it for the resemblance to iPhone. Their notch doesn't contain the same tech or the same purpose: Huawei still has a fingerprint reader.

How much profit does Huawei make from those sales?
They probably have a totally different cost-structure than Apple and their research is not only on phones and notebooks.

I think our networking department just bought a couple of their dark-fibre products (much to my dismay).

I don't deny that at some point, the law of large numbers regarding market share comes into play. But OTOH, as ads continue to decline in effectiveness, I wonder how long the ad-funded development on Android (is piracy still rampant?= can continue if there is not an equal amount of grow on the user base? Because that's what I believe has offset the decline in effectiveness so far.

Apple has seen the decline in revenue from hardware-sales, too over the last couple of years and works to strengthen their services-business. A business that none of the Android OEMs has. Not even Google themselves.
The later are throwing a lot of dirt to the wall, in the hope that something sticks. The former are hoping they can follow on that path, too, as they could with Android. Nobody knows if it's going to work though.

I hope Apple continues to produce phones, OSs and I hope developers write apps for those.
I'll pay for some of them, should the need arise, and pay for a subscription here and there.

You don't understand the purpose of the notch. It's not there for Face ID. It's for maximizing screen area utilization. That's what notch does for all the phones where it is used. While it would not have made sense for Apple to add the notch while keeping the huge home button that was not the case for many Android vendors who had the fingerprint reader on the back of their phones.

Huawei might be #2, but if you asked those people if they could buy an iphone instead. How many of those people would say yes.

I have family in Korea. They buy Samsung because it's cheaper, but they prefer the Iphone for the status.

In Apple's case it is there for the Face ID, and for maximizing screen area. So I think you're confused about the purpose of the notch. A Huawei copy (no purpose) will do that :p

What a person would prefer could he/she afford it is a tricky question. Maybe they would prefer an iPhone but it's also possible that one would prefer, say, Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS (roughly $2K). The only solid data we have is what people are actually buying.

Nope. Face ID is just one of the elements in the notch. Throw away Face ID (and Apple might do just that at some point) and you still need a notch.

Of course they passed Apple... Chinese citizens are getting more and more buying power... Not everyone can afford the Apple brand in China.

It's still not as bad as US Government banning our citizens from buying Huawei in US (whether you can afford it or not).

Maybe Cook can remove another port and try to see how badly he can piss off more customers
Apple deserves a beat down

Maybe Huawei will beat Apple in laptop market.

In my limited use of demo units. MateBook X Pro is better than MBP 2018 both in terms of screen, keyboard and USB port availability. After sales wise, maybe Apple is still better.

I do concern about privacy using Huawei products.

The location of the camera is hideous.
They should just leave it out.

They apparently have a 2-3% cellphone profit share, which means they're one of the few handset makers making money. The report I saw showed their cellphone division made more than Samsung's cellphone division, which is something.

With Huawei you have to cut the cellphone part out from the rest of the company if you want comparables. They didn't make a $7.3bn profit in the cellphone market, that's probably their overall profit number.
