How was the technology not mature? Also, really, you’re kind of comparing the original iPhone to modern smartphones. There were a few phones with front facing cameras at the time, a few, but most phones at the time did not have one. There wasn’t much of a use for one. Selfies weren’t really a thing yet, video calls were crap. Most people carried around a stand alone digital camera even. Why even have a front facing camera?

You’re seriously grasping at straws.
The point being one can't wait for perfection before releasing a product. Otherwise nothing would ever be released. The lack of 3G capability in the original iPhone is one such example. Whatever the for Apple excluding it we all know Apple could have waited nine more months to release the real iPhone (which was the 3G). But they didn't...why?

It’s more of a wrinkle than a crease. Looks like someone rolled a Mylar balloon into a ball.
Agreed, thus the statement "I didn't see a crease down the middle." and the reason why I am asking people to demonstrate it interferes with the operation of the device.

I didn't see a crease down the middle.

You literally said you could see it earlier.

Since I’ve pegged your personality type I also know you’re going to say something like “well it’s not a crease, technically”.

I agree it’s not a “crease” per se, but it is a distortion at the folding point.

That’s fair, that’s up to to individual, but personally I wouldn’t choose a screen crease, plastic materials, weird aspect ratios, wonky software, and lack of apps just for portability over what we have today. I’d think you or anyone would be better off with a device that’s optimized to be a phone and a device that’s optimized to be a tablet. If you’re good overlooking those things in the name of portability, go for it.
Now we're getting somewhere. You're finally acknowledging these are preferences of yours and not failings of the product.

There's everything incorrect about it.

When a poster claims the display is distorted, you say, well it’s not distorted if it’s held at this one certain angle.

When another poster points out that $2,600 is really expensive, you say, but it’s new technology, so it’s ok that it’s expensive.

Those are both examples of you trying (lamely and unconvincingly) to defend certain aspects of this phone.

Why are trying so hard to defend this phone, and why are you trying so hard to convince me you’re not?

Another example:

@mattster16: “Some would argue that the crease and the clearly visible distortion it caused is the issue in itself...”

You: “Please detail this distortion. Does it cause the screen to become dimmer at that location? Does it cause aspect ratio issues? Do the pixels deform? Is the picture less sharp?”

Me: You’re smart enough to see how defensive you’re being in that reply. Stop trying to deny you’re defending this phone.

First rule of holes: stop digging.

Notice the quotation marks you put around the word crease? Go back and re-read my comments paying particular attention to what I placed around that same word.

The compromises I have mentioned are all apparent with these devices. It comes down to the individual if they can overlook those compromises in the name of portability. For me, a screen crease is a deal breaker, but hey, enjoy your device.
Why would you assume I’m even interested in it? Jesus.

But hey. At least you finally said “for me.” I’ll take that as a win.

Crease, wrinkle, shimmering, whatever. It’s way too early to figure out what it even looks most like, let alone whether it matters much or not.

Ha! I knew you’d have this response! “You used the wrong word so you’re wrong.” You tried to do this to me earlier becuase I used the word “if” and you couldn’t interpret my intent.

I can feel your unjustified smugness and pseudo-intellectualism through my phone!

I don’t think they want to read what you’re saying. I see a bunch of people upset that Apple didn’t get to it first and who therefore are telling themselves (maybe correctly, maybe not) in order to avoid the cognitive dissonance that it’s OK because Apple will do it better.

Happens every time.

I can see it with my own eyes. I’m supposed to ignore it and assume that somehow I will be less annoyed with it at some future date?

It’s a very interesting device, but they released it before it was fully baked.

Haha, now having or not having a screen crease is a preference. I guess you would prefer to have it? I am clearly way out of line for not wanting a crease in the middle of my screen. You and John should team up to think of more ways to downplay this crease.

Sigh:

Having said that I've been asking you to provide details of how this "word" interferes with the functionality of this device:

Please detail this distortion. Does it cause the screen to become dimmer at that location? Does it cause aspect ratio issues? Do the pixels deform? Is the picture less sharp?

Yet here you are bickering over words.

No, you've seen it in a crappy video. I think it more than reasonable to wait until you have seen it with your own eyes before reaching a conclusion.

If it doesn't interfere with the image or operation of the device then I don't see it as an issue.

No one “downplayed” the crease or whatever it is. Of course the “preference” would be no distortion. Stop being coy.

The issue is that for some people that’s a deal breaker and for others it isn’t. It’s not a thick line, so for many, the flexibility will be worth the distortion that may or may not be very visible. I thought the Samsung video looked pretty damn good. And I’d love to have a single device. As would millions of other people. And now - millions of people will get it!

It’s amazing. It’s almost like...different people like different things! Crazy concept, I know.

I love the notch. If not for the notch I’d constantly be picking up my phone upside down. I wish the Apple TV remote had a notch.

Wow.

Maybe you’d learn to love the crease. It would help you keep the device in the proper orientation.

Wow.

I wasn’t the one who called it a preference. Haha the second part of your comment sounds like something Trump would say, completely out of touch with reality. Yes, right, millions of people will be buying this device.

One word for ya: notch.

The notch is a deliberate design decision. Also a branding decision because it distinguishes the phone as an iPhone. You can hate if you want. A screen distortion because the technology isn’t fully there yet isn’t the same thing.

The problem here is he is equating "crease" with distortion. The video shows a "crease" but it does not show distortion. While I fully acknowledge there could be distortion I have to wait until the unit is available and I can judge for myself or read reviews from people who have reviewed it.

Maybe you’d learn to love the crease. It would help you keep the device in the proper orientation.

You don’t see the difference between an ugly asymmetric wrinkle down the middle of the entire screen and a notch that doesn’t get in the way of content at all? Why are you so eager to defend this thing as if it’s the perfect implementation of foldable screen technology? That day will come, but this surely isn’t it.
