I have to say, I have the app installed on my MBA and I honestly can't see any improvement in my fans. They run at full tilt whenever the mood takes them.

You should monitor to cpu temperature to see the difference; e.g. iStat pro widget. My cpu temp used to climb to 90+ C running handbrake before Coolbook. It now max out at ~80 C after Coolbook - but the fan still spins at 6200 rpm. In other words, it could have already cooled your MBA significantly even though the fan noise was not improved.

Check with you credit card company, may be your order never went through.

It did. There's nothing amiss on my end -- I've confirmed that the money has been paid. I've checked my spam folder to be sure that any emails didn't go there. I have emailed the developer to inquire about the problem. So far, nothing. I'm just wondering if there's any other way to get in touch with him. It's a bit hard to resolve a problem like this when the other party is completely uncommunicative.

I asked a question to support@coolbook.se early April, and got a reply in 4 days from the developer himself. He may be just overwhelmed in getting back all the the inquiries.

Another thing that you can try, in case it was registered and you just didn't receive the email, was to type in the activation info anyway.

First name: (as you entered in when purchasing the software)
Last name: (as you entered in when purchasing the software)
Key: (your full email address, in my case at least)

This worked. Thanks!

UPDATE:The developer contacted me and sent me the license, so as soon as I can get somewhere that a firewall isn't blocking my registration attempt, I can activate this and try the undervolting setting.

awesome good luck and post if you need help. it literally took me 10-15 minutes of messing around to utilize the programs entire potential. i just happen to get lucky that my cpu can do 0.9V on every frequency. as a starting point, you can just set everything at 0.9V and then increase from there if you have to.

btw guys, how can i make sure that coolbook is running in the background like it's supposed to even when the program is closed? i already checked the activity monitor and it does show up there, but i was wondering if there was another way. is there a widget that will display cpu frequency?

list of settings

could we extend this thread by having people who have purchased coolbook listing their exact settings for on power and not. it would be interesting to see the variance in settings and the differing strategies for how many different settings - i.e. just a pair (low and high) or how many steps in between

sure i'll post mine. keep in mind that these settings are tailored to my needs:

Adapter

1600 MHz - 0.9V

Throttling level: High
Temp limit: 85C

Battery

600 MHz 0.9V
700 MHz 0.9V
800 MHz 0.9V
1200 MHz 0.9V

Throttling level: High
Temp limit: 85C

yes it sure is. the mba seems to be relatively stable at 0.9V at 1600MHz, so all is well.

just an update: i've removed 1600MHz and 1400MHz from coolbook under battery use. i noticed that performance difference was pretty minimal for what i do (browse, word, etc.), so i removed those two speeds to save some battery life. i think by making all these adjustments, i got an extra hour of battery life out of my mba! according to my battery indicator, i am at 80% charge with 3:38 remaining.

Did you test that? The dev writes on his productpage that there is only "experimental support" for the MBA. Meaning that you could have the same batterydrain as on the MBP-LED (Santa Rosa).

Hi fuzzielitlpanda, your adapter setting is interesting. Since you only have 1 frequency set up, when the temp reaches above 85C during CPUTest, what happens? I mean, what frequency does it throttle down to, and at what voltage?

well i'm actually going to disable that cpu throttle since i only have one frequency. i didn't bother doing the cputest since i only perform that test to ensure system stability.

hm i don't know what the battery drain is. i've gained longer battery life after adjusting the voltage. what do you mean by testing that?

My MBA is showing 800MHZ, .9000v, 49C and still the bloody fans are at 6900rpm.

I am doing sod all. No hard CPU work. No Flash.

I'm beginning to hate this MacBook Air.

Have you noticed how much air is acrually pushed out at that 6000 RPM? Almost nothing. When I put my cheek near the air-vents, I almost feel no air flowing out. My ears only pick up the rant. That's probably one of the reasons why the heat never dissipates effectively.

yes i've noticed that too. however, unless i'm running applications under 100% cpu load, the mba has never gotten hot to the point where i have to worry about airflow.

When you open it and see how much space they had, I think it's amazing that it moves as much air as it does. The Air will only get better... I think we often forget this is a first gen product!

impressions after undervolting

So, since I finally received my registration and got the coolbook controller portion unlocked, here's where I'm at, setting wise:

adapter:
1200mhz - .9250
1400mhz - .9500
1600mhz - 1.000

Battery:
800mhz - .9000
1200mhz - .9250
1400mhz - .9500
1600mhz - 1.000

I'm going to let it run, and see what I think. Immediate impression are this.
While watching video with an external monitor, I still get up to 6200 rpm on the fan. But it takes longer. My battery seems to have a bit more life. As I type this, I'm at 93% charge and am sitting at ~5:48 minutes of battery. Not too bad. So far, so good. I may try to go even lower on my voltages. My current temp is 47C and fan at 2504rpm.
