Unless you want a Verizon iPad NYC is just insane. Though the 5 th ave best buy had a ton of AT&T 64 gb blacks if anyone's interested.

I was just told by the Apple Store in Sunrise, FL that people are "still" camping out, starting at 4AM in the morning to buy their iPad when the store opens at 10AM. That is wild!!!!!!!I did not know that the iPad device would have such a pull on people.

Going to try to score a 16GB black wifi model from target tomorrow....but I could be swayed to get an AT&T version...or a 32GB black wifi...

Psyched!

As I and others have suggested, don't bother. Order online. See post 17 for suggested places. Pick up the phone and do it now! If they're closed, do it 1st thing in the morning. You'll save on sales tax too, if the place is out of state.

We don't know which model you want and whether it's easily available. As of right now, I see a bunch of Verizon iPad 2s in stock at macmall.com.

Totally pissed off today. Went to apple store at Brea, CA asking if they have any in stock. Sales#1 said he has to check. Sales#2 said they have black wifi 16gb in stock. I asked if I can have one and sales #1 said he is putting my order into the system and in about 5-10 min we will find out. Meanwhile, I saw another customer who was there earlier than me with sales #3 and sales #3 had 3 ipads in his hand. So I guess if that customer doesn't want it, I would be able to get one. After about 5 min or so, sale#3 brought all those ipads back to the room and the customer left. So I was sooooo excited thinking I would get one for sure. After that, sales #1 went to check and he came out saying they all sold out. I told him I just saw those 3 and he said we all sold out. 😡 Knowing arguing with him would not change anything so I request to talk to the manager. This manager is such a jerk. He told me those are reserved for specific customers. Doesn't matter how hard I try, I still walk out w/o it 🙁

Not for me today

Walked into my local Walmart at lunchtime today. Went to the "Entertainment" in the far corner of the store (not much traffic) and the salesperson was just putting two iPad 2s into the display case. He said that he just unpacked them. Been looking for a 32gb black wifi for several weeks and walked out with one! Lucky day for me! 😀

I'm tired of the games Apple plays with the customers. Why are they so lousy with their merchandise eligibility? I guess it's their marketing ploy, causing frenzy, for customers to continue their Apple product high and addiction. We are the peasants and spenders. They are the money makers.

OK, my just-turned 13 year old daugther has saved allowance, babysitting money, birthday money, etc., for over a year to get iPad. She was going to get the older model, but then got some money for birthday, which gave her enough to wait and get the new one. Of course, her birthday came 3 weeks after the launch, right in the midst of the crush of trying to get one.

So, I'd been tracking with the online Target tracker (every 10 minutes during waking hours for the last week), but I haven't seen any of the 16GB wifi models available locally during that time.

Decided to try the Apple store last week - waited for 2 hours in Washington Square Mall (Oregon) with her last week only to get declined, so I thought I'd try one more time before ordering online. I thought I might go earlier and to an Apple store not inside the mall (since I thought colder weather would keep some away). Well, got up at 5 this morning headed over to Bridgeport Apple (in Tigard, Oregon). There were only a handful ahead of me. Good news is that it wasn't raining - bad news is it was only 36 degrees.

After waiting for over 2 hours (having a good time chatting with fellow propestive ipad buyers), around 7:40 the manager came out saying that they didn't get any AT&T models or any 64GB wifi models, but he'd be handing tickets out at 8.

Anyway, ended up he only had about 8-10 non-Verizon models in total available. But I got the 16GB wifi my daughter had wanted. Upon telling her, it was her excitement and appreciation that made stumbling out of bed at 5 and freezing my buns off for 3 hours all worth it.

So, yes, patience and persistence do payoff - and getting up early enough to beat the scalpers doesn't hurt either. 🙂

I know both those stores and I live in the area. I feel your pain waiting in the cold like that.

Honestly, I think you missed the meaning of patience (although I totally get the persistence part of your story). I would have just ordered online, that's being patient and at the same time teaches your daughter that all good things come to those who wait. I commend your daughter for saving up the money. That's a good amount to earn as a 13 year old.

I kind of don't get the necessity to constantly call, scour the web, or camp out at stores for a device. Some people act like they're hunting down a kidney for a transplant. I asked one of my co-workers why he stayed in line for 7 hours on launch day to score his. I got the usual "because it's an iPad, I so have been waiting for one, no way did I want to wait when I could just tough it out for 7 hours, etc." I nodded my head not wanting to create any tension at work with an awkward conversation. I walked away reminded why he works 3 pay scales below me yet is older.

If you're so upset, vote w/your wallet. Buy a competitor's product.

Although you're likely partly right w/"marketing ploy", people having to wait a long time, line up early, etc. discourages some people from buying at all and increases the chance they won't buy or buy a competitor's device. That means a lost sale and lost profit for Apple. I don't think they really want that.

I've experienced shortages of many other electronic items well before even the iPhone existed. Ramping up production isn't just as easy a turning a dial to 10 or 11. There are other countries that Apple has launched in, besides the US... and Apple even held off on those other countries for a few weeks. Japan's still on hold, so you can be thankful for that.

I'll say it again. Order it online, preferably from a couple retailers. It's a lot less stress and work.

Was looking for something unrelated in my local OKC walmart, and saw a 16gb wifi just sitting there in the display last evening.

Local apple store says they're starting to catch up. He said it's still a bit hit or miss in possibly getting the model that you want, but it's getting easier to at least get one.

And I know this has been discussed before, but the diverging product line (two colors, three internet possibilities) probably has something to do with it.

I found that the business unit in my local apple store had a prerogative in raiding the truck for business owners. Can't say its the same for all stores, but it beats getting up and standing in line to compete with college kids.

Yep, there are 18 different SKUs in the US. 😱 This a bit unusual for Apple given that Steve Jobs did a lot to simplify the very messy and convoluted Mac product line when he came back into power.

I'd imagine that part of the problem is anticipating (or misanticipating) demand for certain SKUs along w/units simply being spread too thin due to too many permutations and including too many retailers.

I wouldn't be surprised if the next gen iPad:
- doesn't have separate 3G versions for AT&T vs. Verizon
- doesn't offer color choices
- has 1 fewer memory choice

Score!

It said limited availability on the tracker site and I got the last one at a Target somewhat on the way to work. It was empty there at 8:45AM... 🙂

16GB Wifi/Black!

Trying to make sure I don't think I need the AT&T version since those appear to be in stock at a different store and I could go at lunch time....

um... there is no Apple store in Sunrise, FL.
-There is a Best Buy with an Apple section.
-There is an Apple Store in Galleria Mall, which is 15 miles away in Fort Lauderdale proper, on a road called Sunrise Blvd.

The Galleria Mall is in Sunrise, FL. By the way, I just got my iPad 2 from there this morning. There were like only 15 people on line. I arrived around 8:45 am and was able to grab a 32 GB wifi black iPad. The store was gracious enough to open at 8AM for early purchase.

I think most are surprising at the sales of the iPad2

I didnt see anyone on this forum saying that demand would be this high for the iPad 2 before it was released and it is obvious that Apple under-estimated the demand.

No, the Galleria is on Sunrise Blvd. The City of Sunrise is well to the west.

Actually, I didn't miss it, I just didn't remove that part from the quote - my daugther might have patience, but I never said I did... 🙂

I agree with you though about just ordering and waiting. If only my obsessive personality would have allowed it, I would have slept more in the past week...

really? wasn't in my experience. it was ridiculously inaccurate and resulted in much wasted time going to targets for nothing.

It was inaccurate for me as well. Told me a Target had Ipad's available (not even limited) when they actually hadn't had any in a few days. I'm sure it is simply relying on Target's database which wasn't correct.

Same for me here. Target claimed the stock online checker was inaccurate and had been for weeks.

This led me to go ahead and order it online. Instead of ordering from Apple though, I tried those out of state companies. Called all of them today. Mac Connection had some in stock. Ordered this afternoon, it'll be here Friday! Free express shipping no less!
