This is what I do not understand and if I am missing something perhaps someone can correct my thinking... The quest for a so called wall to wall screen on the front of a flagship phone necessarily is an impossible goal because at the very least, a flagship phone must have a camera on the front, even if everything else is somehow removed, it would seem a camera cannot be eliminated on a flagship device.

The non essential PH-1 was an exercise in minimalism and if any phone was ever going to do without a front facing camera that was the phone that would do it. So they have to have a notch albeit one that is as small as possible.

OK so now that we can establish that a notch is unavoidable, we come to the only other possible complaint and that is that 'it would be better to have the entire notch depth blacked out. But this is also nonsensical because that is software based not hardware based. If it were hardware based then there would be no choice, as it now stands that can be achieved at any time anyway.

In fact Apple have already explained that this will be up to the user at least where the complaint is feasible. For example I personally do not see that the notch is a problem with full screen video, but if one does find that to be unacceptable, Apple has already explained that the user can choose to black out the 'ears' and view the movie smaller.

So what the hell is the notch complaint about, I really do not understand it at all.

Further, Apple specifically FORBIDS developers from correcting it via software. You see the notch whether you want it or not. Plenty of other brands make devices with a full, massive screen, along with piles of sensors, better front facing cameras, and other features. Apple could have as well, but instead chose to force a terrible design choice onto all users that want a phone that's at least a little different from the same dreck they've been pushing for four years.

I'm sure the thread is full of Apple apologists, but the reality is that content doesn't account for a notch, and never will. UI elements on websites won't account for it. Hell, UI from Apple itself doesn't account for it, and instead ends up covered or awkwardly stretched, creating useless gaps, and smaller content.

New account, not a new Macrumors user, nor am I just some android fanboy coming here to bash - especially as I type this from an iMac.

Apple half-assed it this year, and you're delusional if you think otherwise. The 8/8 Plus is the same design that's now running on four years. The X is just the gimmick version of the 8 line with an extremely poor design choice, a high price, and continued lackluster specs in the name of planned obsolescence.

But hey, you keep sipping that kool aid, keep on condemning anyone with a different opinion, and definitely keep trying to scare potential new users away for sharing their opinions. That way you and the other folks that live and breath off MacRumors forum comments can keep the status quo going.

Idk but I know why I dislike it but noway would be a deal breaker. I'm not sure if Apple increased the screen ratio like LG and Samsung has done but if it's still 16:9 video content will have part of the video cut out which is why I see it as a bad thing. I also think the Note 8 or S8 and the other ones trying to cut the bezels is a cleaner look but no big deal imho.

And yet you cared enough to insult me, demean me, and to write up that quality piece, detailing how little you care.

Whether it's issues with iOS 11, concerns about the iPhone X, or legitimate problems with the iPhone 8/8 Plus, you see multiple threads detailing them on the first page of this forum alone. And in each, anyone that dares question the supremacy of Apple is ridiculed, insulted, and berated for having the perceived audacity to demand better. It's this complacency that gave us 4 years of the iPhone 6, that has let the Mac Pro languish, and that has perpetuated more and more iOS bugs.

So yeah - everyone's got their own opinions, and they're entitled them. But acting as if someone is a child for questioning a company's quality or products? That's some pretty blind devotion. It's a tech product from a profiting company. Not a religion.

Am I talking in Swahili without realising it, what you say can be achieved with software exactly so in the sense that they have left that possibility of which you say they could have done, they have in fact already done it. Yes?

With few exceptions like un-zoomed video, Apple doesn’t hide the notch, nor do they allow developers to hide it, as per their developer guidelines. That’s the complaint for many of those who don’t like appearance of the notch. So there is a valid complaint.

Here's my take on it:

There needs to be quite a bit of space devoted to the hardware of the front-facing camera, proximity sensor, earpiece speaker, and all the FaceID stuff.

Apple could have just made a solid bezel across the top of the phone like any other phone in this generation.

Instead... they gave us two little extra screens on either side! All the hardware goodies are in the middle... and we get extra screens for mundane static things like the clock, battery and carrier info.

People call it a "notch" because they think it cuts into the screen... as if it's taking away screen area.

I think it's the complete opposite. I think Apple is giving us bonus screens!

Maybe I'm trying to make lemonade... but I'm stickin' to it!

Sure, but the question then is what advantages/disadvantages do those bonus screens carry with it? As far as I can see, the ONLY useful purpose for those areas is the status bar icons. And if that’s the case, making that area black would solve the issue for people who find the shape of those extra little screens unappealing or distracting. And since it’s OLED, it would save that little bit of battery as well.

The only thing the display being lit in the ears does, is draws your eyes TO IT. IT DOESNT CREATE AN ILLUSION IT CREATES A DISTRACTION.

It'll create an enveloping mobile device experience for the most part imo. My eyes will be focused on the huge, efficient screen displaying the Apps i'll be using. More App content on screen will demand my attention.

The info within the split status bar, whether on a black background or App colour-matching background, will complement the rest of the screen.

If I end up getting one, i'll be sure to let you know.

I say that we solve everyone's problems by making the notch into an optional dongle you can purchase. Plug in into the lightning port on the bottom of your iOS device, just like you do your headphones. /s

There will be Notch merchandise don't you worry - t-shirts with the Notch/Apple logo for eg. only a matter of time.
