No MagSafe, no sd-card slot, no USB-A, no other ‘legacy’ ports. And now it’s more expensive. With a tiny 128gb ssd. Too little too late is the understatement of the decade. This is a macbook with a 1.3 inches larger screen.

Nailed it.

It's also the wrong side of $999.

A MacBook with a 13" screen and a second USB-C port is basically what people in the MacBook forum have been crying out for.
Now its here, some MR users are crying like babies

USB-A LOL

I think that if it started with 256 GB of SSD (the same as Macbook 12"), the price would feel a tad bit more justified. As it is now, barely anyone will get by with just 128 GB of SSD, even if storing documents and media on external drives or in the cloud.

I also think that much of the problem is that they kept the "Macbook Air" name, meaning people won't compare it as a "13 inch Macbook retina" but to the old Air - which was more of a powerhouse than this new Air since as you said, it's basically a Macbook 12" but with 13" screen instead and 1 more USB-C port.

I agree. But I don’t see how you could make a 13” ‘Macbook’ with 256SSD for the same price as a 12” MacBook with the same specs. The screen is more expensive. So is the CPU.

CPU price is the same or cheaper to the previous processor. Whiskey Lake would have been slightly more expensive and therefore a price increase would be justified. This low performing tablet like PC is just a rip off

I have not been crying about this.
And I need USB-A because all devices I use wherever I go are still USB-A.
If all you need is USB-C then just get an iPad Pro. It’s cheaper and more powerful.

i believe the MBA can run under load for a sustained period of time, with the performance closer to that of the nTB MBP.

It’s an easy decision for you then. Go for the MBP.

my current MBP is still going strong but i will getting a MBA for my gf. However, i will wait and see about that keyboard.

These are not exciting numbers for a brand new product that tries to address a target market that wants reliability and longevity for their dollar.

128GB is a slap in the face... plain and simple

The multi is pretty weak, and the Windows alternatives at that form factor (and lower price) eat this machine alive.

It still looks to have better performance than the 12” MacBook, Windows machines are a different game they may be faster but I’d still rather use MacOS than Windows! That’s my only issue otherwise I would of brought and tried a Surface a while back.

Well it has to be faster than the 12”, they are fanless 5W right, no surprise there :).

I sure hope it’s better performance than a computer that didn’t even get updated from last year.

I just find it really disappointing that this is a brand new machine and it’s starting point is so meh performance wise.

That doesn’t bode well for where a value conscious buyer of this machine will find themselves in one or two years from now.

I just want a MacBook that’s going to compliment my iMac 2012 (that’s also due an upgrade when Apple update them) by being able to let me write for long periods of time, a little photo editing in Pixelmator and just the usual, web browsing, Netflix, YouTube, email and so on. The Air looks to be that because it has a retina screen, longer battery life than the 12” and a bigger screen.

Why what were you expecting? Most people on this forum seem disappointed with those specs.

Didnt expect its single core bench to be where it is. I have to compare it to what I am using atm, which is a 2013 MBP i7. This would be an upgrade.

Plus, considering the wattage, this processor seems pretty efficient.

I do understand it. Putting in a Whiskey Lake, at least as an upgradeable option, would have made this a killer machine bringing it back to where it was on release a couple of years ago. A sleek designed, well built and powerful notebook. As it stand right now its just a nice looking machine for watching Youtube. But lets wait for Cinebench scores

YouTube, word processing and Netflix is the target market ;).

Some of the comments on this thread are hilarious......so much exaggeration.

I have a base 2014 MBA with 4GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. I do all of the traditional Office and iWork stuff......no problem. MacOS runs smooth as butter. Web browsing....same. Mail, Messages, Calendar, Notes, FaceTime run slick as snot. Editing in Photo app...no sweat. iMovie......works great.

Based on GeekBench results, I assume the New MBA will perform better than my 2014 MBA, since it outperformed the 2017 MBA with 8GB RAM. After reading some of the hyperbole in this thread, there must be a huge gap between what the typical consumer does with a laptop and what the typical MR reader does with a laptop.

I have to say - it's pretty amazing that's working so well for you.
That's an almost unusable amount of RAM for macOS and doing much of anything - for me anyhow - even just for loads of tabs open in Safari
