It's not even about the defective product at this point. Sh-t happens, I understand. No company has or will ever have a 0% failure/defective rate with their products. But the audacity to charge me $31 for this? I am... disgusted.

:(

Following this thread is like watching a horror movie where you just want to get all the bad parts over with and hoping that the good guy wins in the end.

damn that sucks, getting a GOLD with a defective, that is the worse...

the GOLD I got at the store has a tiny chip near the power button, but I'm not worried about it, I'm not gonna return it for something this small

HOWEVER, I do wished QA handled this better......feels like deja vu with the iPhone 5 and scuff-gate right out the box

why dont u just take it back to the retail store. they would exchange it on the spot without this 31$ fee.

I live in Pensacola Beach, FL. From what I understand we are the farthest city from any triangle of outlying stores. The closest one to me is in Metairie, LA which is a three hour drive.

I know it's not ideal - but if I were you I'd drive there on Saturday morning and tell them what happened - return it there..You'll probably spend more in gas money, but you'd have a phone until then and maybe save yourself a couple days without the iPhone.

He is getting a new 5s shipped to him before he has to send his 5s back.

Makes perfect sense to me to put up with a finicky volume rocker for a few days (controlling the volume through the settings app in the meantime), and not have to waste the time / gas. Besides, theres no guarantee that the store even has replacements for him in stock.

Oh Baby! Oh Baby!

You are right, nothing compares to getting the one you wanted on the madness that is launch day :D

I wish there was a study done to monitor dopamine levels of launch day iPhone purchasers to see how much they shoot up for us.

Ok you are freaking me out. Are you my twin brother it never knew of? I was sitting here at work thinking the exact same thing when I read this thread. We have too much in common man. Who are you?

I realize that's what he's trying to do - however, if they are indeed going to charge him the $31 for that, I would refuse that and drive to that Apple Store. Doesn't make much sense I guess, but would make me feel better..

However, if they won't charge him and will send the replacement before he sends the deffective one back, then yes, I would do that.

Sitting in my papasan chair reading a book in my entrance way to ensure I don't miss my UPS man. Every so often I'll go the the front room and look out the window for a few minutes. It's so pathetic! How does Apple do this to me? Someone else admit they do something similar so I don't feel so inane.

The worst part is I'm using a Motorola BackFlip as my temp phone which is an exceptionally terrible device. :apple:

Update: I am so shocked at Apple for this.

My want to reevaluate what is important in your life.

Dude, do not allow apple to charge you anything to ship it back or anything else that has to do with this replacement. That's insanity. Never stop escalating until it's resolved. If you have to, tell them you blog, use social media, have lots of followers on twitter and that you will make sure to spread this news to everyone you can. This always works for me when dealing with this kind of issue.

Good luck. I feel for you!

Always happy to cross paths with ya' Iphone5preorder :)

+1! Why is it there are those who have to tell others how or what they are supposed to feel or value? Makes me wonder what's going on in their life that makes them feel like the need to dictate such to others!

Truth stings sometimes don't it. When you are on your deathbed I am sure you will look back and wanted to have waited for the UPS man more than you did.

I was going to say the same thing. For whatever reason -- perhaps they cannot delivering all the packages or because they are just lazy -- they sometimes lie about delivery attempts.

I have had this happen with FedEx also. I think it depends on the delivery person. The companies should really punish these people.

I don't think you people understand the business of mail/package deliveries. These drivers have to make sure they are on time with everything regardless of how many packages they have that day. The companies themselves push their employees pretty hard to get everything done. They don't let them come back to the headquarters without having every package delivered or at least attempted. It could be that pressure that makes them quickly knock and then leave the note if nobody answers quickly. My father works for UPS, he tells me stories all the time. They make jokes that UPS stands for UnderPaid Slaves. Not every UPS driver is a bad apple though. They do have their work cut out for them.

They have to put a hold on my card. $749 for the phone +72.28 tax AND THEY ARE CHARGING ME $31 FOR SHIPPING AND EXTRA "FEES" FOR SENDING THE PHONE BACK. THE $31 FEE IS CHARGED AND DOES NOT LIFT WITH THE HOLD. I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS KIND OF EXPERIENCE WITH APPLE.

I said, "Why on God's green earth would I be responsible for that charge when I just bought the phone and it was defective!?" He's contacting his senior advisor now...

OK, I'm pissing myself again, but now for a much different reason! I am going to stop living vicariously through you right.... now.

bull crap! If there's a chip outta my phone I am returning it! You should definitely not accept that. Even if they are impossible to get.

UPS drivers get paid pretty good money...i know trainees starting at 60+ and one guy i met makes 80k...thats double the national average

I hope you get his worked out op. I'm with the guy who says keep escalating until they send you a new one at no charge. I can understand the hold but his should not cost you anything.

And I also agree in wishing others would mind their own business and keep quiet if they have nothing positive or supportive to offer. Everyone gets excited about something and if they don't I feel sorry for them.

Much love.

I'm sorry you got a dodgy phone, OP. That sucks. :(

Make sure they don't charge you that 31 dollars. I think you got a moron for tech support rep in the first place. Upgrade software to make hardware problem go away? Um... yeah.

Hang in there. The next one shall be flawless!
