I recently purchased an iPhone 4 and switched to AT&T. MacRumors is one of the busiest iPhone forums on the net, so I figured it'd be a great place to hang out and get information. Unfortunately, most of the good threads are buried beneath a pile of steaming nonsense and the C3PO trolls are like parasites that feed off any Apple misstep or product inferiority. They attach themselves to certain threads and drive it into the ground, gloating and cheering for Steve Job's demise.

Basically, The fact that many posters are very young and immature are testing my patience with this particular forum. The mods need to create appropriate subforums to deal with this or I won't be coming back here very often.

Well at least you were intelligent enough to say that here instead of creating yet another useless thread. What's one more post lost among the noise, right?

I'm almost tempted to cancel my account because I'm sick of reading about all these complaints. If you don't like your phone then take it back. I've been using Apple products for many years, and I am fully confident Apple will make this right one way or another. Just have to give it a little time. The phone only came out six days ago! I'm certain Apple has every available engineer working on a solution. Lets just have a little patience please. I'm not even going to enter the forums for a while until all this non-sense blows over. See y'all in a couple weeks.

No it won't, we have been waiting 4 years for it to "get back to normal".

Exactly. This is just a direct consequence of the fact that Apple is expanding or (transforming if you will) it's product portfolio into consumer electronics and cellphones.

This attracts a totally different crowd than the MBP, Mac Pro and pro applications people. Nothing wrong with that though, and nothing to be done about it.

I am rarely one to be biased due to post counts or registration dates, but June 2010 has been a tough month for Mac Rumors. The number of new sign ups has been astronomical, and they have had no problem just jumping right in and having a go.

Personally when I join a new forum, I spend time getting to know the forum, the people, how things are done, what is okay and not okay that kind of stuff. Perhaps make a few innocous replies to other threads etc etc.

Some of the JunTennies have started more threads in a week or two than long-contributing members have made in years.

I think the lack of consideration is pretty noticeable and it is mostly coming from a percentage of the new sign ups.

I think it is great that MacRumors is growing like wildfire, but I think it sucks that a good percentage of the new people coming on are not house trained.

The iphone target demographic covers a broad range of people from young teens until about 50 or even above? It is inevitable that this whole demographic is present on a forum dedicated to the iPhone. It is therefore impossible to find or start an iPhone forum where you will only find people of the age group or intelligence that you desire. Not that intelligence and age are in any way correlated by the way.

So, we will have to live with the fact that there will be trolls, dumb people and smarter people than us on these boards. Use the ignore function to filter out those people you don't want to "hear" and you should be fine.

This sums it up nicely I think for those that simply don't care to participate, for whatever reasons:

Best advice is don't read the iPhone forums. Sure it would be great is everyone in them could be banned but that ain't happening.

We need scrodzilla modding this place, his first tenant when becoming the mod of any board is to ban everyone!

This isn't a slam, but simply an assertion.

That very well could be true, but not because it's inherently better. But simply because the Mac has consistently had a much lower penetration into mainstream America.

In other words, Macs have always hovered around ~10% market penetration historically (though it's been growing slightly). It was only 8% as of 2008. 2009 the number was 12%.

Macs are also pricier machines comparatively to lower cost machines from Dell or HP (not to mention eMachines). That is one reason for the lower market share. The lower the cost, the wider the audience. The wider the audience, the more likely you are to have an accurate, representative sample of the entire user base.

Additionally, Macs historically have been widely used in the design and publishing fields which usually have well educated users. Windows is used in a wide variety of businesses, some that don't always require a user to be educated to the same degree (pun intended).

Lastly, it should be mentioned that a recent study showed that ~85% of Mac users also owned a Windows PC as well. :)
I don't disagree with your general point. I was just giving one possible reason for Claude626's assertion that Mac users were "higher class." It's all in the definition, isn't it? I'm educated, classy, was in a creative field, and am a Mac user from way back. I wouldn't make any broad assumptions based on that set of facts. Others might. ;)

Oh, and I've owned Apple computers since 1984 when I was ten years old. I've used my share of Windows computers for work and play, but my home computer has always been a Mac. Does that make me even classier? :p

Word!

"I see the Cult of Mac Force is strong in this one... good... good..."

Can you actually explain why you'd think such a thing, that somehow being an Apple owner or supporter would somehow magically bestow some higher class of being above the peons?

While I may have been a bit sarcastic in the question, make no mistake: I am asking a serious question here, and I'd like a response.

Unless of course you feel that you're above such petty discussions, that is. </sarcasm>

Well... Up until the introduction of iPhones generally Mac users were the more appreciative group of users. The apple computers were more expensive and therefore meant users had to work harder to afford the computers.. Now given the fact that iPhones are so cheap, any ( and it seems all) smug teenagers are adding their 5cents and turning this forum into a wasteland. Maturity no longer exists.

It seems DoFoT9 has already partly answered for me.

To answer your question... We can clearly see which type of demographic Apple is aiming their products at. Sure, anyone can buy an Apple product, but we clearly see that Apple has put MUCH thoughts into aesthetic and quality material into their products AND charge a hefty premium. This premium will drive the uneducated low class away in droves... Sure they would love to own one, but it's VERY unlikely they'll shell out to buy one. There are only a few groups of people who will shell out that premium:

1) Rich people is generally the higher class folks, but I'll concede that there are plenty of shallow minded rich folks, too. However, when we think rich folks... we think classy high class.

2) People who appreciate and value beauty. Anyone can appreciate things of beauty, but only those who truly value them will shell out money to own said things of beauty. Think paintings... Why do high class people buy them and why do common folks think it's absurd to spend $$$ on a painting to... just let it sit there and.... to be looked at? I think it's safe to say that anyone who's willing to shell out money to own a thing of beauty has some part of a classy eye, which, I think, generally are of middle class people and above.

3) People who appreciate build quality of a product. Again, back to the premium pricing of Apple products... Usually educated people value their money investments in products that will last over a cheap working product that will require replacements more often. I'm sure we've all heard of the reaction of... "I can buy TWO laptop PCs with that money you just spend on your MacBook Pro!"

So really. I don't see how it's so hard to believe that someone like myself would get the impression that Apple product users are generally a cut above the average population in terms of intelligence and ETIQUETTE.

For the record... I'm by no mean an Apple "fanboy" defending the Apple's "prestigious high horse"... My main desktop system is a custom built Intel Core i7. My laptop is a MacBook Pro. And my soon to be phone is the iPhone 4. I go where power/performance or just "best of the crop" are in general.

So there you have it. You asked why I have such views. There's my answer. ;)

I'll be perfectly honest: I stopped reading right there, thanks.

I got my answer, exactly what I expected.

Claude626, you forgot the most important reason  OSX!!

But nah you are right with your points, and I agree with you. Unfortunately the iPhone has brought in new users that are, well, impatient, arrogant, want answers and don't give a crap about anything else other then their needs. But I guess that is society these days lol.

True br0ady, not all lower classed citisens are uneducated lol. I'm lower class and I'm super doper smart ;)

My favorites:

DO A SEARCH! Reported! You know, the ones that bash an OP and then continually come to the thread and post.

Everyone wants to be a hero an self moderate.

I'll come here alot when a new phone is released, but it soon gets out of hand - everytime. Not just the bashing of a new product. Eventially, everyone becomes a know it all and feels that they should control the boards. Thats why I'll come here once or twice a week apposed to every day. And as usual, it will become every three weeks or so. It then doesnt take long to see why I dont come here often.

If what they want, is people to not post. They got it.

As Steve would say "Non Issue"

If you don't like the threads - don't click in them.

If you aren't enjoying the experience here - don't visit.

And if you're going to leave a message board - you don't have to announce it. What purpose does that serve? Do you need the attention or the support of others to justify your decision?

Not trying to be mean - but take a break from the site if you aren't enjoying yourself here or are frustrated. Come back a few weeks AFTER a major product launch. It really should be no surprise to anyone that product launches and keynotes will both spurn lots of debate.

You know what's 10x more annoying? The people who say there isn't a problem or that you're holding it wrong!

Yes new users who expect to get what they pay for and don't just bend over to Steve Jobs.

Complainer makes thread complaining about complaints.

Lol.

LOLOLOLOL!! Priceless! And spot on!
Ditto on avoid the crap you don't want to read and focus on the useful-to-you content only. I've been here for awhile and the pros outweigh the cons continuously. Definitely the most helpful and genuinely well-meaning fellow posters I've encountered in a forum. When my Macbook was volleying rainbow-colored beach-balls, the issue was troubleshot here within minutes by the resident experts here willing to read and offer solutions. Nothing is perfect, no one is perfect, but only you have the power to control your exposure. Relax...the dust will settle soon enough.

Why do people feel they need to give a big, rambling speech about how they are going to leave a forum, or stop reading it, like people are just logging into the forum just to read their witty posts? If you don't like it, and you wanna leave, leave! Watch,I'll show you how easy it is...

There's a subtle irony there...your classless remark about rich people having class.

It is seriously getting tiresome and 40% of the threads are complaints and it doesn't end. Happen last year, happened the year before that.

Its like people feel like they have no one else to talk to and they need these boards to make them feel better about every conscious decision.

ITS a ********** phone. And for a lot of people here....a phone you will replace in one year. If its that bad.....RETURN IT. It's called 30 day warranty, play the game you were given. If its the same as your old phone, then Why are you even complaining.

1 billion phones are sold PER YEAR. You have other choices. But we aren't your family, don't come to us when times are bad. Problems have been stated and either deal with it or return it.

YOU HOLD ALL THE POWER. DEAL WITH IT. YOU ARE TYE CONSUMER. Sorry I am being harsh, but grow a pair. At least for your iPhone.....you'll come out a better person. Promise.

Doubely promise......with cherries and sprinkles

I know some of the criticism and complaining is over the top but we need a forum were we can say what we really feel and let it all hang out. Go to the Apple Discussions and it's like being in Zombie Land.
