As a 20+ year veteran of the wireless industry and most of that time was dealing with product quality and root cause/corrective action I can tell you that holding any phone will affect reception and that placing the actual antenna on a surface that can come in contact with human skin makes it that much worse. Add to that the ability to "connect" two different radio antennas by bridging them compounds the issue. This will not be corrected by software. The other issue is that Apple failed miserably at representing accurate signal strength makes a bad situation even worse. I wonder if there are studies being done on the potential higher RF exposure due to no buffer between human skin and the antennas? I know that a company I worked for made their factory pouches so the back/antenna would face away from the body to help signal and avoid excessive exposure.

How do you change links and give them titles like you did in this post?

Where do any of them report there is a reception problem with the iPhone 4?

Gizmodo?

Which of them report that Apple has ever said there is a reception problem with the iPhone 4?

How about some simple reading comprehension on your part.

Please show me where Apple EVER said that there was a reception problem with the iPhone 4 or that Apple ever said they would fix a reception problem with a software update.

I like how I get labeled a fanboy for pointing out people can't understand simple english and are complaining while not having their facts straight nor a simple and basic understanding of what is even going on. It has reached absurd proportions at this point and this thread is a perfect example.

The OP is ignorant, and cites an ignorant source. So you basically created a thread that is fundamentally stupid and a waste of time for anyone who actually know what is going on with the iPhone and Apple.

Apple gets a lot of feedback from people who do not have problems with the phone, and of the many people I know with iPhone 4s, none of them are having any of these problems.

Some people here and elsewhere are seemingly raising a ruckus if for nothing more than to hope to get something Free out of Apple. A handful of people actually have a problem, and some of those smart enough to handle it correctly have exchanged their devices to find their problems magically fixed.

So all this other nonsense being spouted is just that. Pull your heads out.

This OP wasn't providing proof of Apple's admittance of guilt. I was providing four sources that replicated a problem that you suggest doesn't exist. How is TUAW showing anything but this?!

Your posts are useless wastes of space with ridiculous arguments. I could give a crap if I get something free from Apple, I actually can demonstrate the problem with my phone both at the office and at home. I have not seen one post from anyone stating they exchanged their phone and this issue was remedied.

This is simply a design flaw resulting in signal attenuation on every iPhone 4. It has been demonstrated many times by many people that holding the iP4 in your left hand in a natural way results in about 20 dB of attenuation, which depending on the signal strength at you location results in dropped calls and loss of data transmission.

I posted a wager in another thread on this topic, which no big mouth was willing to take me up on, so I will repost it here for this threads big mouths. I will wager any amount over $1,000 (I don't want to waste my time for $5), that your phone has the same design flaw mine does. PM me if you are interested and we will find a mutually agreeable testing facility and you can directly overnight your phone to them at my cost. They will test the phone and we will abide by their result. If I am correct you will reimburse me the costs incurred (shipping and testing) as well as the amount of the wager. If I am incorrect I will pay you the amount of the wager.

So all you big mouth fan boys, there it is, if you iPhone is as fantastic as you believe here is an easy grand, come and get it. I will take all wagers up to a total of $10,000, first come first serve so please don't delay.

I wish to help. Please send me your iPhones and I will test them. testing will cost you nothing, I will do the work in the name of science. Testing will take 1 to 2 years and I will return the phones and the results promptly after that.

Ahhh yes another clever and extremely meaningful contribution. Your posts are awesome, and I always look forward to how humorous you can be.

BTW, just a quick question, can you post on this forum all day or only during recess and nap time?

Grow up. There are much more important things to worry about than a cellphone. You people act like it's the end of the world.

Why are you wasting time on an iPhone message board? Don't you have more important things to do than worry about other people's experiences with their cell phones?

Waaaa, some people like to make jokes, waaaaa.

Which are generally appreciated if the person is funny. You on the other hand....

You just don't think its funny because its a light hearted jab at your post. I'm sure you have no problem with jokes about others. Of course, you are the guy who calls other people ignorant and stupid so why would anyone give a crap about how you feel?

P.S. Your nap time joke was hysterical.

1. I don't call people ignorant or stupid, I just point it out.
2. Nap time joke was hilarious.
3. Shockingly not one Apple Fanyboy has taken me up on my offer, yet they all continue to post about the phone not having any issues. Shocker.

1. Same thing.
2. It was hysterical. The first time some one used it here. Not so much the 10000 time.
3. I agree, of course no one will. People here are too afraid to use Craig's list without the cops watching them, you really think they are going to send their iphone to anyone for a test and, if right, think they will get up to 10 grand from anyone?

1. Sorry, but sadly it is not the same thing. One would be stating my opinion, the other is pointing out an obvious fact. In most cases my comments have been the latter.

2. Huh, thought this joke might be original, so unlike you I actually checked and low and behold, this is not anywhere in these forums, much less 10,000 times as you ridiculously claimed.

3. Easy ways to ensure the safety of the phone as well as put an escrow account in place to ensure payment. If someone, including you, wants to offer me the same deal and if my phone can be shown to have an attenuation issue they will pay the wager let me know and I will get it all set up.

2. Really? You searched the entire forum for that joke. And really? 10,000 was an absolute number to you?

Update: Steve Jobs doesn't give a %$#@ about my letter three days later. Nor does he give a %$#@ about anyone claiming his design masterpiece is a bit of an engineering failure.

I recently read "Inside Steve's Brain" and I am not one bit surprised by any decisions Apple Relations has made regarding this matter.

Where is my magical, outstanding, incredible software fix?

Good. Lord. I don't know why but I just read all 5 pages...and MacRumors is apparently a sorority from the looks of it. Jesus.

OP, kudos on taking some initiative and sending a well put email to Apple with some facts for a change. Those of us who sit and bitch and do nothing (or just do nothing period) have no right to critisize him for actually doing something about an issue 90% of us are experiencing. Yes it's just a cell phone - and yes it's not a huge issue for some. But for those of us who are in sales, own a small business, are in long distance relationships, are deployed across the country/around the world, are traveling for business and trying to get a 2 minute conversation in before our son runs on the field for a game - well cell phone dependability IS important. Especially when this isn't exactly yesterdays technology we hold in our hands. Yes it's never been perfect with AT&T - but it's always been a hell of a lot better than it has been lately. I've said it once and I'll say it 1,000 times more...it is a phone. And it should at least acheive its' primary objective...place and receive calls...consistantly. Especially when the equipment + cost of ownership tops out at around $3,000 over the life of the contract.

I could get over it if pix messaging was messed up for some reason, wifi connectivity was blah, GPS was sluggish, proximity sensor isn't perfect now (oh wait that is an issue), or other truly trivial add-ons with the phone. Understandable bugs that will get sorted out. But the fact that the main function doesn't work well at all, coupled with Apple tip toeing around the issue...is pretty maddening I think.

:steps off soapbox:

To all the whiners, complainers, those who are crushed and can't sleep because your IP4 doesn't meet your expectations...

RETURN THE F'IN PHONE ALREADY....GET A LIFE AND SHUT UP!

IT'S A PHONE AND NO ONE IS MAKING YOU KEEP IT.

This thread should be closed out for sheer stupidity and irrational behavior. Please take your meds now....

If my IP4 didn't work properly I would have returned it for a new one....

and yours does? so go poo on a different thread then. or go find a forum where no one whines...? (good luck)

Yes, mine works fine. So do the other many millions in the hands of people out there that are buying these in droves. Apple is backordered for weeks with full-bore production....duh!

If you look for a problem, you'll find one. That is the issue here for most. They are so freaking obsessed with their iPhone that they are looking for problems.

My point...if you don't like it, return it and get something else. Apple doesn't care about the 1% who are crying...nor would I.

Why isn't anyone paying attention? Apple explicitly skewed the way bars are displayed to pacify unhappy AT&T customers. Now, that has come back to bite them.

Are we just 'stuck' with Bumpers or moving to another phone until 2011 or do we 'deal' with a hardware defect?

Yes.

Apple did a bad thing, and now it's coming back around. Fortunately for Apple, they have built a very loyal following that will happily ignore the problem to avoid admitting there is any issue in the first place. It truly is just a problem with the users - but it's not how they're holding the phone, it's the fact that they don't care if they have to adjust how they use the phone, as long as they can continue using their precious iPhone.

You just don't think its funny because its a light hearted jab at your post.

I didn't find it funny either.
My wife's iPhone 4 is faster than my 3G in every way possible...can't wait until mine shows up.
This, and Marksmans posts, are exactly my point. It's a proven issue, but people could care less as long as they have their precious iPhone. There will never be a software update that fixes the issue, it's the hardware. Fortunately you can fix it for $29.

jkrutch,
no offense to your thought processes or Apple's but that's just stupid. 1%? and yeah they're backordered...from orders placed mainly before these issues came to light. I can preorder all day if I'm told I'll be getting a box with X in it...but when X, with some prominent defects, shows up instead...people get pissed.

apparently 1% is enough for lawsuits and bad press from small media outlets like CNN and MSNBC. No big deal really, I'm sure that'll blow over.

I wish, at my job, I could easily brush aside the unhappy few. According to a business study 3% share good experiences while 10% share bad ones...most companies try and pay attention to the pissed off cilents. So I would think Apple would place great stock in appeasing the unhappy (notwithstanding, loyal) 1%

"Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning"
Bill Gates said that. you...or Mr. Jobs might have heard of him?

Did you really expect a response within three days if at all? He is running a major company, might have a few other things to take care of first.
