I'm interested to see what your latest drawing will look like engraved.

But please, learn to flip photos! It isn't hard, use Preview and flip horizontally!

Haha sorry im just too lazy sometimes, but i will post the final drawing tonight, i made several and im going to post the one i will use for the engraving.

but even if it died, a dead mbp would fetch a pretty penny on ebay. true story!

seriously? that's awesome...had no idea Macs hold their value so well

if i were to sell my mbp 4-5 years later (dead or alive), how much could I expect to fetch? obviously no one can tell but roundabout?

and what kinds of things would I need to do in order to ensure no identity theft? could I remove the HDD and call it a day? (assuming it no longer boots)

I've usually taken to donating my old systems but if I can squeeze $100-$500 bucks out of an obsolete system 4-5 years later, that would be phenomenal

at least when he does finally sell it, he doesnt have to put a sticky note with his name on it to prove its his picture :)

classic

etch the entire thing, itll look nice when its all done. I bet tattoo nuts will dig it.

a current mac will not be obsolete in 5 yrs time. maybe slow, but itll do what a lot of people want it to do.

Heres some photos i took with my iphone

Its pretty much going to look like that when its done. I might do a few touch ups between now and when i turn it in for a day.

The place that is doing the etching for me only has a scanner big enough for a 8 1/2 by 11 piece of paper. But the guy there will try to make it stretch on the left side and top side to reach the corners. Im not complaining though since it only takes half a day and costs me around $25 for this big size.

you should talk to the guy that doing the laser etching if he kept his prices low you to could prolly set up a pretty lucrative etching business from macrumors people alone....

Im just happy for mom and pop places that charge very reasonable prices compared to the higher tech places you can find on the web. (No offense guys)

The first place i went to on the web for etching my name gave me a quote of $100 not including shipping. I don't even want to know how much this new drawing i have would be.

Im glad there are still nice and honest people around. :)

I say congrats!!

WOW!!! amazing, Ive always had the feeling of doing that. I have a laser cutter/etcher at my school, i actually work in the lab with it, and i always do stuff on wood and acrylics but never thought of my mbp. Sweet deal. Good job, can wait to see the final.

Just make sure it isnt too powerful, the one that is etching mine is a 25W Epilog laser etcher, and the other companys i looked into were using either the 25W or 45W with the power down a little bit.

Don't want it cutting into the lid :D

The name thing...not for me. I'd get something beautiful that compliments the Apple quality.

It's your MBP - do what you will with it and enjoy!

Caveat - It may be like a tattoo - three years from now you may not like it.

To all the "that's dumb", "way to drop your resale value" commenters...
Shut up and let the guy enjoy his laptop.

excellent so now in a few years when you want to sell it and get a new one no one is going to give you a penny for it, nice going

looks kinda cool though, my buddy is thinking about having his HP engraved like that, HPs dont hold their value like macs do though

I don't understand your logic here... So in a few years when he's making big bucks he will still need to sell computers to get a new one?

Look at the bright side of things.

Yeah that last drawing looks awesome on your MacBook Pro!

Be sure to take plenty pictures when it's finished :D

how bout an arrow through the apple?

or better yet, pirate swords :) if you know the history, this makes sense :)

I like this, I would like to engrave something on mine when I get it, but I don't think I could make a decision on what.

I'm the same way. I've tossed around the idea a whole bunch, but I can't decide on a final design. Though I do like that curvey design somebody posted from flickr

Cool! I will def. do this after my warranty runs out, just to be sure.

I was planning to do it after my extended warranty ran out but I called alot of apple people and they all said its the same thing as putting on a sticker.

I just turned in my mbp and the guy is going to do a few touch ups of his own and I'm suppose to stop by after I get off tech school and take a look at the final draft and give a okay to start. So I'm suppose to get it back Friday.

Im really excited.

I just went by the etching place and saw the final draft. I am really excited now, the guy said it will be done by tomorrow around noon so im going to pick it up during my lunch and ill post pics when i get them uploaded!!

Seriously? Now you've got me REALLY wanting to do this with mine! I have an AppleCare Protection Plan, so I'm really worried about voiding my warranty.

Man, you've got me excited for the design now too. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

Where is this place you got this done at?

I thought about getting it engraved but then resale value would plummet... Unless you intend to keep it until it dies... but I resale usually 2-3 years to upgrade.

Where is this place you got this done at?

Its called Recognition Place, its a trophy, awards, plaques, kind of place. They just happen to use a Epilog laser etching for their etching.

I thought my warranty ran out this august but it turns out its suppose to run out next august. But the guys at my apple store (i didn't ask the average floor guy) said it wont void my warranty at all.

To top it off i called applecare and the guy who i talked to asked his manager and he said the same thing. So i guess its one of the very few things you can do to your mbp and not void warranty.
