I'm curious as to how they would get the machine to do this?

Do they have to re-create the image in Illustrator and somehow get the machine to read the file?

Can someone explain it to me lol.

I was wondering the same thing. Also, would you have any tips on how to find places that do this? Like what did you do, call all the trophy shops in your area and ask them what kind of laser they have? If you happen to live in the Los Angeles county area, would you share where you went do do this? :D:D

I'm considering having a dragon design etched into the back of mine some day, probably cost me a sweet penny but it would look pretty neat.

i just noticed the same! i'd be hard pressed to do that to mine since i'd probably get sick of it after a while, but that would be awesome to do with a cover.

Holy crap. Searching on flickr for this returns TONS of really sweet things people have done on their laptops.

Sick ****... but that's like getting a tattoo... I would have gotten a cartoon character or something... not my name most likely.. but still it looks dope.

^Oh I just meant I would have put a lot more thought into what I got engraved.. maybe he really likes his name.. (I have tattoos btw)

For those saying his resell value is gonna be crap, you should also consider that the chances of it getting stolen have dropped drastically.

Especially if he uses it at school where most thieves would steal it and use it around campus they would think twice about stealing something so recognizable.

Ah, OK.. that make sense now.

I know alot of the online laser etching companys are based in the los angeles area and san francisco area.

But those places charge a arm and a leg for laser etching. I will just call to trophy places and engraving places and ask what kind of laser etching they use and if they could etch a laptop.

Most places seem to prefer the files to be in a Corel Draw file, Illustrator file, EPS file.

The main place that students at my school get sent to is a place in pasadena called penpoint. i think there reasonable, because people still go there. I personally havent gone, since i work at the laser at my school, so i get it afterhours when i need to do projects. But thats the only one, unless you go to a JC, which most of them now have lasers, and ask them.
The laser prefers corel draw, and illustrator. We ask people at school to bring the files as PDFs though. the colors brake down like this....
RGB
RED=CUT (dont want that)
BLUE=SCORE (maybe, but no dont try it. Plus only works for lines)
BLACK=ETCH (this is what you want, anything that has a thickness automatically becomes an etch, but make it black just in case.)

I got it back around 11ish, but i just now got my hands on a camera.

Here it is

I think thats all the etching im going to have done for now until i come up with something else.

It only cost me $40 including tax and one day rush, normally it takes them more than a day.

Still waiting on a picture of the final project! Where is it?!

[edit]

Well, of course. As soon as I post that message, you've just posted the pictures!

Looks awesome! Maybe I'll do that sometime. Seems like an awesome idea.

Dude! That is friggin awesome! I can't believe I never thought bout etching these metal cases. Now I'm thinking to do it. As to those who say 'resale value now in tank' I don't sell my old hardware. Heck I still got my first Mac SE sitting in my spare room =D And it STILL works!

Now I just have to figure out a design.

Huh.. I wonder if it is possible to go deep enough that the back light would illuminate it like the logo...

That is really cool, now I want to find somthing to do to mine. I probably won't do it, but it might be fun to design somthing anyway.

I dont like your name idea what so ever but the other new etch you got done is totally kickass and it would good with that etching just not the name but the new one is totally kickass

are these etching reversible?

i like the original clean, minimalist look of the MBP better though...i may consider painting in a different color (like black)

Its not reversible, its like the etching on the bottom near the fans.

I think ive seen some chemical thing you can do to make your etching turn black but im not sure where i saw it.

You can buy the display clamshell's as a spare-part from various sources online, you'll just need to know how to fit it.. I'd say a new replacement costs about $40+P&P. Very cheap...

:)

They aren't that hard to pry appart, i've had to tear 3 of them to bits at work to replace failed super drives, failed displays, bad keyboards, drive increases, blah blah blipity bloopity blah. The hardest part is just detaching the front of the base, around the latch button.

Just make sure it isnt too powerful, the one that is etching mine is a 25W Epilog laser etcher, and the other companys i looked into were using either the 25W or 45W with the power down a little bit.

Don't want it cutting into the lid :D

I wouldn't worry about it cutting into the lid. I have an Epilog 75W. You can't cut metal. I agree you should only use the power that's needed, but there's no real risk of cutting.

I haven't done my Macbook Pro yet but am gearing up for it. My wife engraved her iPhone and that came out really nice!

been there, done that..
