I know and I'm worried this is the new normal. I for one am very hesitant to plunk down that much money. Given that its a Gen 1 product just increases my hesitancy.

I know, talk about foot in mouth moment. Sorry, but when you offer watches that are priced at 1,300 dollars and a phone at 1,000 (US) you are catering to the rich.
This is my biggest concern. If sales do well, it will be the new price point, which itself will creep up year by year.

I'm actually more disappointed the x AppleCare prices have jumped, greed.

I just picked up a 7 plus with Apple care 256 for £650, even the thought of a 8 256 for £1100 with AC lost me....I'll be returning my preorder .

I'm okay buying a generation behind each year from those desperate to upgrade.

Apple was guaranteed £600-£800 from me each year for the flagship phone, the last iPhone I bought new was 6S plus and only cause my 6 was such a lemon, and only reason I got the 7, I need 256 storage.

Wonder how many more annual upgraders have jumped ship like me .

No but the fact remains that other phone makers are able to produce a premium product that has even more features then the X for around the price of the the iPhone 8, never mind the X.

The X does not represent apple innovation, but rather apple catching up. I'm not anti-apple but I'm disappointed that the features in the X have been in other phones for years. imo, the X should have been the iPhone 8.

What other phones are you talking about and why not simply buy those?

I wonder if the number of people on the iPhone upgrade program has had an effect on this...

The cost to Apple is more for those with the program, and the cost to consumers is less.

I did not realise the AW ceramic 42 with "sports band" and AC + is £1460....... + Plan each month which will be £5-£10.

Maybe time apple hired some execs who are not multi millionaires..... Cook is so far removed from reality, but hang with Angela and her mates talking about social issues while living the ultra rich life style

Samsung s8 or note 8, both cheaper than the 8.

When you are an Apple customer / fan, buying an android is not really an option is it? It's just frustrating to see these very good phones cost less than the 8 while having the same functionality , different os

I could, the S8 is a good example, and it can be purchased new for 750. I may very well get the S8, I'm undecided tbh. I do enjoy the iOS experience, and I'm well invested in the ecosystem. The point I was making is that Apple is charging a hefty amount, no matter how you slice it, and there are other phones on the market for less using the same features.

You guys should buy the S8 then.

Saying you practically have no choice is itself a choice. It's 2017 and ecosystems are easier to switch between than before. Buy the S8. Buy the note 8. You're already saying they may even do more than the X so why settle for less?

I agree with the bolded. Do those other phones perform at the same level (hardware, software, and integration wise) as the iPhone. The answer is subjective and can only be answered by each individual user.

At times, I do think that a,b and c features should already be on the iPhone. And then I realize, that Apple may not think said features would integrate well enough at the moment, they have something better, or are going in a different direction.

In my mind, the benchmark should not be keeping up or even surpassing what other companies may do each year. For me, the standard is does my current product or new product from Apple meet my wants or needs on several different tiers. If it does, it really doesn't matter to me what the other companies are doing, unless their product offering can integrate into my Apple ecosystem at the same level or higher, that I am pleased with.

As to price, I do agree that Apple is going higher and higher, thus giving me pause at times, which isn't a bad thing, as it gives one a chance to truly compare a want to a need, not to mention dollars versus features benefit.

I may be in the minority around here, and that is fine if that is the case. I prefer Apple to do what they do the best they can each and every time, instead of worrying about being across the finish line first every time to beat Samsung.

Exactly the X is just not worth the premium price, that’s the big issue.

You know, last year, a 7 Plus with a lot of RAM came close to what the iPhone X is costing.

I don't view it as all that big a difference, especially considering the extra functionalities.

What extras?

if you really add up the cost (considering your getting the 256 because let be honest you are...)
AC+- 199.00
Phone- 1,149
IF you have to pay an activation charge--
40.00
and finally the TAX----

looking at $1,500 ish

I've been thinking about pricing a lot lately because it is really the only thing holding me back from the X. I started thinking about my last 3 iPhone purchases and realized that for the last 3 years I have had no problem buying the $950 top storage plus model but now all of the sudden I'm outraged by a $999 phone?

At this point my likelihood of ordering an X just keeps going up.

If you’re willing to buy a super car but not an iPhone that’s 200 pounds more then it’s just a personal decision you’re making. Stop arguing with people on the internet about your own personal decision and start figuring out what phone you want, or whether you’ll keep what you’ll have. You can obviously afford it but choose not to.

I just asked for what extras, but all i got was "Faceid".. i could understand people just wanting a new look as the iPhone design is looking old and that's more than fine, at least it's not "squirrel"..

People shouldn't try justify their purchasing decision to anyone (except the wife) but, if you are going to say for something at least expand on it..

I can't believe I'm actually saying this because I love the latest and greatest toys, but I won't be buying an iPhone until I can get more of the new features (Screen, etc) for the price of an 8 Plus.

Of the X over the 8? You're also getting OLED, larger screen, smaller body, better cameras, depth sensing which allows portrait mode in the front. Depth sensing will allow AR in the front facing cameras. Battery life will be better for that sized phone. And for me Touch ID isn't reliable so I'm interested to see if Face ID is more reliable.

I have a feeling this is the plan for either next year, or the year after. I think you'll see the entire line shift. There will be an X+ either next year or the year after and that will be the new iPhone lineup. Eventually replacing the 'iPhone 6' design we've had over the last several years. The larger screen to bezel ratio allows Apple to give us a smaller body while giving greater screen size. I think it's always bothered Apple that the phone size has gotten so big and this allows them to be more comfortable with that.

A bit disingenuous because If you want top end storage on the X, it's $1150.

I'm still going to stick to my trusty Nexus 6.

Came out 2 years ago, and STILL has a higher AMOLED screen resolution that the not yet on sale iPhoneX
It has two proper front facing Speakers.
Camera is great, speed is fine.

I'm sure a iPhone 8 has more Street Cred, but honestly, I really need a phone/computer to do a LOT more to get me to change from my Nexus 6

Can I afford a iPhoneX, yes, I'd not even notice the payment, but I know, for myself It's won't offer me anything new that my Nexus 6 can't do for me.
In fact if anything, without the nice speakers, the headphone jack and the screen notch it would be worse for what I want from my device.

I wish they would actually offer something really new.
Perhaps one day the concept of a Phone you can plug into a monitor at home and be your true desktop PC also will be a genuine, workable reality.

The differences between the 8+ and the the X boil down to the screen, a marginally improved camera and FaceID. The screen of course has a big notch in it. Portrait mode selfies, what a must have feature... And FaceID won't end up being any better or worse than TouchID, just different.

Haha that's what I did too. I was like damn it's $999 (I plan on just using iCloud for the difference) and then I was like well I guess with my last + model I paid like $900, I'll do the upgrade plan to get AppleCare included in the price... per month it's only like $4 more a month... I can do that, it's worth it to me. I have gotten to the point of turning on my home computer maybe once a week now. It's all just personal value. People have to decide what that is on an individual basis for them and look at it form there.

That's fair, but for some a marginally improved camera is all someone needs to upgrade (see 6->7) and if you're in my age group a portrait mode selfie will sell the phone itself. And for someone in a rainy environment, aka the PNW where touch ID doesn't work from about Nov-Mar due to wetness I look forward to my new screen scanning overlord.

For me its real simple, it has to represent value for what you are getting and its no longer doing that for me.
I'm ok dropping 150k on a super car and I have done so a few times, but I'm not dropping 1k on an X that does nothing more than i can do on my 6s or 7 now. YMMV.

Exactly, we can all find a spare £1000 if we need to... but it's justifying it, which we cannot.

Just out of curiosity why exactly would a selfie portrait mode itself sell the phone to you? $1000 for a selfie portrait mode?

I don't mind the price. I mind that it has a horrible modem. The screen, processor, RAM, etc are all great but I'm not buying a phone that I can't get a decent signal or data speed on.
