My 5S on 7.1 significantly outperforms my 4S on any of the OS6's. It's not close.

Now OS7's on the older iPhones that may not be true. But you could not pay me to go backwards with this 5S.

The fastest iPhone to date was the i5 running iOS6. Faster than the 5S running 7.1

Two possible scenarios.

Answer 1: No. It's always behaved this way.
TH55: "Ah it's alright then. Works fine like this anyway. Actually it makes perfect sense."

Answer 2: Yeah, but they changed it now.
TH55: "Why would they do that?? It sucks now. I liked it better the way it was before!"
No, I would prefer it scrolled to the top regardless if it ever did that. I think about it every time I open messages.

Millions don't know any better LOL

There are way too many Apple sheep who defend bugs, ignore faults, accept delays and basically drool over anything that comes from the company.
I loved the iPhone 4 and I loved iOS5/6.
I'm pretty much hating the iPhone5 and iOS7, so unless Apple sort this out pretty darned soon I will be jumping ship when my next contract is due. I really don't like what iOS7 did to my iPhone5 and the wall of silence coming from Apple's direction for SIX long months.

Preach!!!

----------

Yeah, I commented on this in another thread somewhere but others said they didn't experience it. It has happened to me from 7.0 through 7.1 inclusive.

Why does it seem like people are paid by Apple to ignore these glitches? And before anyone tells me it's not a glitch and that Safari is supposed to refresh every time I exit/reopen it, even for seconds, or that it's in my head, please don't bother.

The only reasonable conclusion is that Apple deliberately released software that slows down/runs poorly on hardware they still market and sell, essentially forcing you to upgrade.

If they don't get this straightened out by the iPhone 6 I am definitely switching to Android.

Sounds like their plan to get you to update totally worked...oh, wait...that's some plan on their part then. ;)

What's your point? It doesn't make it ethical, and the ONLY reason I'm giving them a chance to remedy this awful problem is because I am so accustomed to their hardware/software.

That it isn't some sort of a hatched plan or anything, but just the nature of a redesigned and recoded OS. Things have certainly improved with iOS 7.1, although not completely for older devices. But, again, they are older devices, so some performance hit is pretty much expected with newer (and especially changed) version updates.

I agree that it shouldn't be to the degree that things were in 7.0, and I agree that there should be a way for people to go back at least one version if they so choose, but the expectation of the latest version to be just as good as far as performance on older hardware as some older version is not a completely realistic one.

I don't understand why they downgraded so many features; Safari's search bar, the disappearing back/forward buttons, message forwarding/editing, music, etc and most importantly, autocorrect. It's inexcusable.

Not everyone finds the new Safari search bar, and the disappearing back/forward buttons to be a downgrade. Many, like me, find them to be improvements.

Message forwarding is pretty simple, I have no issues with Music (though I can see why some do), and autocorrect works better for me than it did on iOS 6.

There are some faults, yes, but not everyone agrees that they are the ones that you've mentioned.

How is the disappearing back/forward an improvement?? It now takes 2 steps every time you use them which is A LOT. Really annoying.

And anyone who doesn't notice the search bars inferiority is just oblivious. The problem is when you return to it to amend a search the text is highlighted and you have to place the cursor to unhighlight it which always takes several attempts. VERY counterintuitive and annoying, makes ZERO sense. By amend I mean add/remove text to the search criteria which happens OFTEN.

Some people value being able to see more of the content, especially if you're reading an article and not changing pages often. Want to see the bar? Take 1/10th of a second to scroll up slightly, and bam, the bar appears. Also, you can swipe from the edges of the screen to go back/forwards. Even simpler than tapping the arrows on the bar.

For the search bar? It's simple to clear it, can be used to type addresses as well as search, and prompts a simple to use sheet to select recent searches, bookmarks, websites, etc.

Not sure how having a differing opinion can make me "oblivious," as though you are God almighty and your opinion is the only one that's valid..

Notice how I never said you were wrong - just that your opinion isn't the only one.

You just basically ignored all of my points, but ok. No, it is not easier to swipe from the edge of the screen as it doesn't always work.

And how on earth is it easier to clear the search bar and re type the same text again?! I'm talking about when you searched for something and want to add to it. It's not easier, it's unnecessarily more difficult.

I also forgot to mention the search history appearing by default, huge downgrade. I constantly need to reuse old searches .

I didn't ignore your points - I'm simply pointing out a different point of view.

I just did a search for "bacon" on Safari. Then, I clicked the search bar again, and "bacon was still there." I was able to tap at the end of the word, and add another word to the search, and search again. Took all of 3 seconds. Not sure where the issue is?

And sorry the swipe isn't work for you, works fine on my 5s about 95% of the time, same with my fiancee's 4S. Make sure you're swiping from the far edge - helps to start from off of the screen.

It's definitely more of a hassle with longer search terms that go beyond the space in the bar. However I'm not sure if that aspect of it was any different in the separate search bar in Safari pre iOS 7.

Editing a long search URL is a faff now. Several clicks and a will it/won't it scroll right to the end.

I also notice that the select/copy/select all etc icon is still extremely close to the pull cursors, allowing no margin for error. We really need a touch pen!
I've lost count of the number of times I've tried to highlight vast areas of text, only for it to mess up and me have to start again.

What do you mean? This is really not difficult to understand, when you go to add text to the existing search text it is highlighted and you have to be extremely careful in placing the cursor or you erase it. The only time this is anywhere close to simple is when there is only one short word in the search bar. If it goes anywhere near the "x" it is a pain in the ass and you end up deleting everything and having to start over.

I can see that - I don't generally have long searches, but I can see the annoyance there. To prevent deleting, you can just touch and hold about 3/4 of the way through the search bar, and drag over to the end.

Could be implemented better, sure. Send feedback to Apple.

Still not with you on your other opinions, but hey, that's why they're opinions.

Was it different in iOS 6 or earlier?
