Got the 4ghz, 295x, 1TB FLASH storage. I guess I'll buy ram at OWC or something similar as usual. Uggg, now to have to sell my late 12.

bumfluff

bumfluff,

I have in my shopping cart the exact same specs as your machine but it's $4399 and $169 for applecare. Are you getting some sort of a discount? Any tips on how I can score a better deal? haha Thanks

I think the thing that gave me the most pause was the graphics card. I've only ever used Nvidia (even on my non-macs). I also figure I have 14 days to return it if it is sluggish. Otherwise, it is a nice complement to my rMBP.

Went with the i7 and 295X. I'm planning to upgrade the memory myself.

That is a business discount. I qualified for both a business discount and an education discount, I went with education as it was a couple hundred dollars cheaper.

What about 3rd party ram recommendations? I usually get OWC's version. Is there anywhere else to consider with top notch name brand ram that might be less?

Oh you lucky dog!!! Thats a bunch of savings in this range..

I was actually really surprised at the discount actually, normally (on MacBooks at least) is only 100-200 max, getting almost 400 off is what pushed me over the edge to order right away (incase it was a mistake lol)

What kind of validation do they do that you're actually a student? Yes, I'm a scumbag and will lie if possible. haha

Apple never checks for proof whether you are a student or not with the education discount. Unless they change this soon, anybody can use the education discount.

From what I can tell, none. They didn't ask me for anything but I did put my school (part time grad student) email address in the notification email location just in case.

back in the day you had to produce a school ID or class schedule, but that was ages ago (like g4 days). I'm not sure what the deal is these days, but i don't think its an exhaustive process.

Retina iMac Memory is user upgradable.

Can the 5K iMac ram be upgraded at a later date? i.e. has anyone seen anything to suggest it has the little upgrade door on the rear like the other 27's have had in the past?

I believe it can, at least according to Apple's website. Check under "Tech's Specs"; it says that it is user upgradable.

I just pulled the trigger on a new Retina iMac. I even added the memory in the order, I was going to search for it but did not want the hassle. I had the money so I bought it.

i7 w/295x +1TB fusion. Will upgrade the memory later.

Absolutely ecstatic with this 30th anniversary year model!

So guinea pigs are us.. lets do this. I do wish they would have some higher end BTO options so that we don't have to wait 2 weeks but whatever.

Memory recommendations

What about 3rd party ram recommendations? I usually get OWC's version. Is there anywhere else to consider with top notch name brand ram that might be less?

Crucial. I like Crucial memory; sand goes into the factory, memory chips come out.

OWC uses re-branded memory; I don't know who it is.

I didn't max out my Mac because I can add 3rd party RAMs later for a lower price...

I ordered with maxed out processor and graphics. I get the 3GB Fusion drive as I can add a thunderbolt SSD external drive if I want for a lot less than what they are charging for the internal one. I also only order with 8 GB of ram and do the upgrade myself to 32GB.

Can't wait for it to come in. Should be a nice upgrade.
