I ordered with maxed out processor and graphics. I get the 3GB Fusion drive as I can add a thunderbolt SSD external drive if I want for a lot less than what they are charging for the internal one. I also only order with 8 GB of ram and do the upgrade myself to 32GB.

Can wait for it to come in. Should be a nice upgrade.

I will upgrade only to 24GB, which will not waste the 8GB factory installed RAM.

Worth the wait.

So guinea pigs are us.. lets do this. I do wish they would have some higher end BTO options so that we don't have to wait 2 weeks but whatever.

Worth the wait, if you ask me.

At least they are availbe now; it could have been far worse.

Consider the last launch where we had to wait 'tll December.

Yes true!

I also cancelled and re-ordered my order again! But this time it was because I figured I'd go with the trackpad vs the mmouse. I have a mouse I use so figured a trackpad might be fun to try.

Once you get used to the trackpad you will find it very hard if not impossible to go back to the mouse. Make sure you learn all the gestures and your productivity should go up.

Purchased the 5k base.

Plan to upgrade ram down the road. GPU is more than power enough to drive the display. Read the specs. it can drive the 5k display and an external 4k display!

No gaming, I have a dedicated PC for that, dual 980 gtx SLI 4790k oc'd, etc. 1080p 120hz lightboost enabled monitor.

I ordered my 5K iMac earlier today...This will be my first apple "desktop"

Crucial. I like Crucial memory; sand goes into the factory, memory chips come out.

OWC uses re-branded memory; I don't know who it is.
rakuten sells 32 gb for $320 (Major brand memory. We dont use OEM or Generic Brands to avoid incompatibility)
Crucial for about $330
OWC the highest at $399

By the way they all seem to be cas11. Seems high but I guess that is what apple specs.
What do you think?

Just ordered mine a moment ago. Upgraded the CPU and GPU, and went with the 256Gb SSD. I figured my 256Gb rMBP is "only" 76% full with quite a few Gbs of things to clean up (most of my huge files are on a NAS), so I'd rather stay with the same size but all SSD, and add an external TB2 SSD if I ever need more space.

Apple Care and 2-3 days shipping. Came up to $3010 + $30 shipping + the dreaded CA sales tax

Maxed mine out except the ram since I am gonna steal 16gb from my late 2012 iMac to get to 24gb.

4.0GHz i7
8GB RAM
4GB R9 M295X
1TB SSD
And apple care of course. $139 for 3 years on a $4000 machine. That's a good deal.

I just pulled the trigger on a new Retina iMac. I even added the memory in the order, I was going to search for it but did not want the hassle. I had the money so I bought it.

I am just a little bit jealous sir. Congrats on the new purchase, if I hadn't bought a maxed out 27" earlier this year I'd be right there with you.

Again, congrats.

Thanks so much. I have been wanting a Retina iMac the minute I heard they may build one. It was long overdue. I am very excited to get it. I do lots of video and photo work and this retina screen will give me so much more working space it will be awesome. :D

Ordered 5k iMac

Just thought I'd share a few thoughts on my buying decision.

This was all about the display for me. Primarily, I am a graphic designer working with type. It's been more print based work lately - with a non retina screen I really struggle to get an idea of what text weight/kerning/etc is really going to look like when its printed - this will hopefully give me a clearer view of the work. That being said, I also work in after effects / premier pro for a few projects every year. I don't really do 4k level work, so the screen is less of an advantage for me here. And of course, some heavy photography/photoshop work comes with most projects.

My main concern has been screen lag. I see a lot of comments harping on the video card. This made me second guess purchasing first gen. However, I can't remember an iMac release where people didn't complain about the video card. This seems to be from people who use their machines for 3d games, I'd love to play them, but in reality I just don't make time for it. And from what I have seen in the hands-on video, this machine can rip through images and video without stutter - great, this is what I need, not a high-end 3d machine.

I ordered: 4Ghz processor - no-brainer for the price. 4GB video - again, no-brainer. 8GB RAM - was tempted by the 16GB option since the price is comparable to 3rd party, however I want 32GB and apple charges too much for that, so I will order 3rd party later. Hardest decision for me was storage. I love the idea of all Flash storage, can't stomach the price of apples 1GB Flash drive, wanted more than 256GB or 500GB, so I opted for the 1TB fusion - I use that currently and it's totally fine, never noticed a delay. I primarily work off of external storage.

Hope this helps others.

For me, one reason to go for SSD-only instead of Fusion would be the added heat of a spinning drive inside the iMac's confined housing. Plus the fact that a mechanical drive with moving parts has a higher failure probability.

Especially with the bigger CPU and GPU options, I feel that relieving the machine of the spinner would contribute to available thermal headroom and airflow inside the case.

Still contemplating, though...

After placing my order, I've been thinking and thinking..

How likely or how soon is it possible that apple redesigns the iMac appearance?

I got 4GHz, 16GB ram, 256GB SSD and 295. I also got the Mac Mini 2,6/16GB/1TB fusion for my 4K TV.

For 4,298USD that is amazing. :)
