It really depends on your priorities and what you deem fun (if this isn't work related). I was going to get a regular iMac, but my husband said that I should get the retina so that stopped all hesitation for me :) And the price difference once you go beyond base becomes fairly small in comparison to a regular iMac.

This is true. Just like me returning the MBA makes me feel like I'll be paying only $1500 for the iMac =D

You've made some valid points. However, Dell will soon be coming out with a 5k display (UP2715K) of there own and Photoshop isn't exclusive to OS X.

No one needs an iMac for photoshop work; although, they may want one. Saying that they need one or that it's a "dream machine" is jut falling for marketing hype in my opinion.

Trust me, I wouldn't use a Retina iMac to watch Netflix lol

Anyway, enjoy it. All we can do is make (what we think are) wise decisons based on our needs, right? :D

The Dell comes at a price of $2700. More expensive than the iMac and with no computer attached. IIRC Anand said it most likely will be an overlay (two 2560 panels on top of each other) vs. the Apple's single panel.

There is a question about connections. The iMac can be used as a second monitor via thunderbolt. It's unknown how Dell will do it as the updated display ports aren't yet available.

re: not needing an iMac for PS - well sure, you don't NEED to use an iMac or any other high end computer. But if you are serious about post production and maximizing your time and results, you DO need one. Having a great display is EVERYTHING. Why else to photographers/videographers pay several thousand $$ for a niche professional monitor?

All you point lead me to one conclusion.... you should not be an Apple customer. If I were you I would go get a Dell. The fact that you are even questioning what to do tells me that your heart is not in the Mac world. Nothing wrong with that. For myself, If you gave me the Dell for free I'd still buy the imac. ;)

I custom ordered an imac on the 18th and status changed to shipped on Tuesday, 10/21 with a delivery date of 10/29 to a local apple store in Boston. Does anybody know if it normally takes this long to ship from China to the East Coast? Is it longer because it goes to a store and not to a home address? I appreciate your insights.
I also ordered an Ipad together with iMac and its status was changed to shipped a day before iMac with a delivery date to Boston Apple store on the 24th. This is bizzarre.

picked up the iMac since i ordered base at the retail store.

amazing stuff. reading text is another level. Next to my Dell 24 4k, the iMac 5k is night and day. It just looks sharper.

Mine finally got to Alaska this evening. I wonder how long to get to the east coast now. I'm guessing till Monday at this point.

My iMac i7 M295X is still preparing and have not been packed for shipping yet. Ordered on tuesday. My dads got packed within two days, really hoping that it will be able to ship on monday so I'll receive it next friday.

Considering the poor working conditions at Hon Hai, the way there PR department handles the journalists and the media, the deletion of posts in the Apple discussion forums regarding hardware malfunctions, and the outright arrogance of some of the executives...you are probably right.

My heart just isn't into any of that.

Who knows, mine has been in Alaska since yesterday

oUch. maybe they were just waiting for mine to get there. Let's MOVE IT ALONG UPS and USA Custom guys!!!! :D Let's see what it looks like in the morning.

My iMac is still in Alaska but UPS just moved my delivery estimate back to 10/24 from 10/27. Somehow I think that's very optimistic, considering that I'm on the West coast.

But if it's true, my iMac probably made it onto this flight:

Okay. Goodbye. Don't traumatize yourself any more.

My dad's computer is in Korea now wuuuhhhhh.

edit: which is actually kind of weird since its a bit more far away from Denmark than Shanghai is if I remember correctly. Oh well, 28th of october is soon :)

Yeah, mine just left Alaska as well and the date went back from 27th to 24th. We'll see I guess. They must know something. Gonna be a long night for our babies! :D

That makes no sense. Mine got to Alaska a day before yours. Another guy on here had his ship from China with mine and arrive in Alaska with mine. He was his leave and arrive in Kentucky yesterday where as mine didn't leave Alaska until today. I'm not sure which time zone you're in but it looks like yours and mine took different planes today bound for who knows where. What the heck is UPS doing??

Mine is sitting in Anchorage since getting there this afternoon. UPS kindly updated my delivery date from the 27th to the 29th. Wonderful.

Are all the iMacs shipped from China through Anchorage or just the iMac Retina's?

I decided to go with the Mid-2013 27" iMac after I learned that the iMac Retina did not support Target Display Mode and mine just changed from Preparing Items to Shipped and I am curious where mine might originate...

Thanks,
KC3Dogs

Same here. I have a scheduled delivery for tomorrow however it's been sitting in Alaska with no movement. Plus it still needs to make its way to KY, then to NY

Apparently your machines in Alaska simply sent mine ahead to Louisville as a scout. I'm still sitting in Louisville waiting for the rest of you to catch up.

(Even though mine arrived at 1AM last night, it didn't clear customs until 11AM, missing the once-a-day 4AM flight to Boston).

Most of the shipments by UPS will stop at Anchorage. A lot will clear customs there instead of Louisville.

Fedex also has a hub in AK but they don't seem to use it much for Apple shipments (probably because they handle mostly expedited shipping orders).
