We are on MacRumors.com. It has been suggested that a more intelligent 2.5/3G software solution could be in the works. Where it would auto-switch to the optimum data connection.

auto-switching to the optimum data connection? optimum how? the iPhone already switches to the "best/fastest" signal available. This does not address battery life at all. This is a rumor/speculation site, yes and guess what. No one has speculated with any specificity that 2.1 firmware will improve battery life. The consensus is that it will address a litany of stability issues and a few extra features. So let's not pretend 2.1 firmware is omg the solution to any and every complaint people have about the iPhone, it's not and I imagine the OP's negative experience with iPhone battery life is legitimate and won't be improved to the level that some require.

I've had various Blackberry models over the past several years...currently have Blackberry Pearl. I plan to get rid of my Blackberry after head to head comparison the last week+. The iPhone definitely has some warts but I believe from my experience with the 1st generation iPhone most of the issues I care about will be resolved in the not too distant future. Even with it's warts, the iPhone is light years ahead of my Blackberry. It's not even close for me...and I'm a heavy duty business power user (Exchange support sealed the deal). Is the battery as good as my Pearl? No but it's close enough that the other benefits out weigh this drawback.

If it didn't work for you then you did the right thing, but my experience with the Blackberry vs. iPhone has lead me to the exact opposite conclusion.

That is why I use a BB for voice and iPhone for data until APPLE/AT&T get the fixes done.

Me neither. I use my iphone very much throughout the day and the battery easily lasts 3-4 days without charging.

To topic-starter: Sometimes you get a defective device. It happens. Did you try to have it exchanged or did you just assume that everyone was feeling ok about those same issues and that it was how the iphone was made?

I would very much like to hear from anyone else out there who has an iPhone 3G, uses it "very much throughout the day" and gets 3-4 days without charging. Anyone? After several charge cycles and learning to turn off EVERYTHING unless it's specifically needed, then turn it on and right back off, I'm proud that my phone now lasts a shade over 48 hours, with moderate use. That's pretty much exactly what I got with my 1st gen iPhone, doing things the same way. Perhaps the key to my doubts about the 3-4 days thing lies in the definitions of "very much throughout the day" and "moderate use"? Aside: I would certainly consider defective any phone that started fully charged in the morning and was dead by 2 PM, as a couple of posters have indicated, unless the user happened to be using it constantly during that time. Aside #2: I've noticed that the 3G seems to get less mileage with Bluetooth turned on than the older model did, strangely enough.

2 Weeks? Well done mate. You've wasted so much of your time getting your old phone back.

I think it would take anyone more then 2 weeks to get used to a new phone.

I would have like more than 2 weeks to try the phone out. But since it was $300, I was limited to Apple's 14 day return policy.

I though about it being a defective device. Though after multiple trips to multiple apple stores (Reno, Sacramento, Walnut Creek.) It was never suggested to me nor given the option of switching out to a replacement unit.

The man is enttled to his opinion, whether he likes it or hates it he has every right to post it. And he included pros and cons so he isn't just trying to bash it. Sucks that you can't enjoy it though, because it really is an awesome phone/internet browser/ipod etc.

I really like the way it worked. Fix a few key flaws and I'll probably be back to try it again. Either that or my next iPod wil be an iPod touch.

Dialing contacts
Touch here - Touch there - Touch here. Flick finger. Go back because I skipped it. Blackberry: Just start typing a name from the home screen!

Along with the keyboard, this is one of my biggest concerns as I get ready to pick up my first iphone tomorrow. I currently use a Treo 800w on Sprint and dialing a contact from the home screen couldn't be easier. I'm really hoping that the iphone works well enough for me as a phone and email/texting device but I definitely have my doubts. I guess that's what the return policy is for though and I intend to put my iphone to the test.

Dialing was my main complaint about the keyboard. The first week was tough typing, but after that it was very natural.

Is there an onscreen dial pad? If so, can you dial by name and have it automatically match that up with your contacts?

Waa waaaa. Nothing better to do with your time then tell everyone u wasted your money and went back to the crap phone u had in the first place. Bravo!

Yeah but see, what if someone would have posted a thread praising the iPhone? Do they have nothing better to do than tell everyone how great of a purchase the iPhone was?

You have to look at it both ways, because I'm sure it would be a different story if this thread said "I love my iPhone 3G!!".

Also again, he gave pros too, but obviously the cons outweighed the pros.

Smh.

I for one. This attitude is pretty lame.

I hate that can not make it through a full day on the battery of this phone. I would not consider myself a person that is always on the phone and I still have to recharge my phone by 4pm.

Sounds like you should exchange and hope to get better battery life or do what bruce916 did and return it.

This is my second one. I am hoping to see a fix with a firmware update. Otherwise I will start browsing for an aftermarket battery.....

Hope it works out for you...if you do go the aftermarket route and have success please report back...I'm always interested in hearing alternatives that work.
